I don't believe in Amazon recommendations but I believe in ILM

OK, so this is a bit selfish but might prove of wider interest.

I know fuck all about new releases, in any genre. I have a block about listening to music radio and since I lost MTV et al. things have got worse. I like lots of things, but the area I think I'm particularly out of touch about it chart pop and R&B (and maybe hiphop a bit). This is a list of the things I do know and love in this bracket from the last 2 or 3 years:

Play - Jennifer Lopez
Let Me Blow Ya Mind - Eve & Gwen Stefani
More Than A Woman - Aaliyah
Hit Em Up Style - Blu Cantrell
Consider This - N.O.R.E. (feat. Kelis)
Ante Up - M.O.P.
Ms. Jackson - Outkast
Get UR Freak On - Missy Elliot
I'm A Slave 4U - Britney
Bootylicious - DC

Yeah yeah, all pretty standard ILM stuff, I know. I guess what unites them is inventive, infectious backing tracks (might be called 'production' these days).

Recommend other things that might fit this bill, please.

Cam'ron - Oh Boy (which was a close second in my imaginary P&J, after Nelly)

jm (jtm), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ta - keep 'em coming (with mini-reviews if possible)

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay-Z-"Hola Hovito"
Dizzy Rascal-"I love you"
112-"Peaches and cream"
M.O.P.-"Cold as ice"
Madonna-"Amazing"
NERD-"Tape you"
Ludacris-"Coming to America"

Jay Z reminds me that another of my favourite tracks is Girls Girl Girls.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Brandy - "What About Us"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Coming to America" is really special too....it goes through about 50 tempo changes and it's lyrics are gas.

Michael B, Monday, 17 February 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Oxide and Neutrino-"Amsterdam" (Cheech and Chong Uk garage style)
Lil' Kim-"how many licks" (FILTH!)
DMX-"Party up"
Eve-"Gotta man"
Ja Rule-"Ecsatasy"

Michael B, Monday, 17 February 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay-Z - Excuse Me Miss (evocative yearning within the context of relaxed shoe promotion - with winks) + U Don't Know (unbelievably charming narcissism) + What They Gonna Do
N.O.R.E. - Nothin
Clipse - Let's Talk About It
LL Cool J - Luv U Better (cheesy but emotionally challenging)
Missy - X-Tasy + Slap! Slap! Slap! (beat provokes air masturbation)

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 17 February 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"transcendental" wd b better than "challenging" but perhaps hyperbolic

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 17 February 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Redman's "Samsh Something"-preposterous Carmina Burana style intro and the rest aint too bad either

Michael B, Monday, 17 February 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"SMASH Sumtin" i mean...duhr

michael b, Monday, 17 February 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ms jade ft. timbaland & nelly furtado - 'ching ching' // it's easy to imagine what it sounds like if you understand that kind of thing it sounds pretty much what like you'd imagine unless you're totally wrong

nivea ft. jagged edge - 'don't mess with my man' // there are two of it the old one and the new bleepy electro one they're the same length and they have the same name version 1 version 2

busta rhymes ft. sean paul - 'breath' // the real version without sean paul is so terrible it's just busta rhymes this it's got the good noises in the background ++ seean paul fake dancehall busta rhymes

clipse - 'grindin' (remix)' & the 'selector remix' // you've probably heard 'grindin'' already so

amerie - 'why don't we fall in love' // it seems like so delicate or something because it's all based around one three-part thing that goes over and over it's like part of a song or something i don't know how to explain it there's lots of tension it's beautiful

justin timberlake - 'cry me a river' // every of the first six songs on the cd is so great this is the fifth song on the cd i think i might be wrong so it's getting ready it's timbaland to so that means something it's just a big slushy mess with a guy singing high over it

eve - 'satisfaction' // it's eve but superbasic i always saw the video on tv but my muchmusic is messed up on my cable so i only get the video and really staticky sound you can only hear through sometimes this is a loud song that's happening

ja rule ft. ashanti - 'mesmerize' // this isn't a good recommendation at all it doesn't have funny noises it's a beautiful song that just fills you up it's a glass of milk unless you're a happy optimistic person you will hate this song

50 cent - 'wanksta' // this does have broken sounding production you can be all like 'wow this sounds fuked up' but who cares go listen to pavement you corduroy

jennifer lopez ft. ll cool j - 'all i have' // okay you like production that's what you guys like and noises you want to hear a bunch of funny noises this has a few funny noises and jennifer sings kind of funny but it's more the first time i heard this i thought i hated ll cool j i told someone how i thought he was so insincere but i realized that i love this song

--, Monday, 17 February 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

In the name of all that is good and holy, avoid 50 Cent like he was a syphillitic leper covered in anthrax.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 February 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

replace 'like' with 'as'

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 17 February 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ms jade - jade's the champ + big head

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 17 February 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

haha 50 Cent - In da club, perhaps.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 17 February 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimmy rules this thread so far - I'm just downloading 'Oh Boy' and I quickly realised that it was the one track I'd been hearing and wondering what was called.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 February 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

are you that somebody-aaliyah
ugly-bubba sparxx
ludacris-southern hospitality

robin (robin), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I know the first two of those, Robin. They are OK.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Get "Wanksta" by 50 Cent N. you'll love it.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

mary j - family affair
tweet - oops oh my
eminem - without me

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

whenever i hear 'family affair' i think of n.'s focus group comment: "nicely insistant bassline"

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

insistent

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

insistant = insistent + instant

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that bad?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

no v rare & good!

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I meant my original (correctly spelled) comment on 'Family Affair'?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

no v true & good!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Amerie - Need You Tonight (the most voluptuous backing rhythm ever??)
Bubba Sparxxx - Twork A Little (the best backing rhythm ever!)
Jay-Z - Nigga Please
Toya - I Do
Beenie Man - Feel It Boy
En Vogue - Those Dogs
Faith Evans - Burning Up (Remix)
Ms Jade - Dead Wrong
Missy Elliot - Play That Beat

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 February 2003 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks again. Since Camron, I have heard Brandy's 'What About Us', Amerie's 'Why Don't We Fall In Love?', Ludacris's 'Coming to America' and 50 Cents's 'Wanksta'. I'm not mad about any of them, though I realise I have heard Brandy before and quite like it, and Amerie's is nice but a bit smooth for me.

I think the M.O.P. was a bit of a red herring - I like it but it doesn't really share much with the others.

More hip-pop less hip-hop I think, please.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 20 February 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You need Wayne Wonder - "No Letting Go", wait until the handclaps kick in. Brilliant.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 20 February 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha N. you need Ja Rule in your life - search "I'm Real (Remix)" and "Livin' It Up". His earlier hip-pop singles are great too ("Between You & Me", "Put It On Me") but his vocals are a bit rough there.

Also Mystikal's "Bouncin' Back'!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Lil Kim "The Jump Off". I'll second Amerie "Need You Tonight" also, love the beat on that. (cowbell always prevails)

original bgm, Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan is DEAD ON about "The Jumpoff". It's Timbaland's drumline offering. Swank. I'd just buy the Clipse album, were I you. And Kelis' _Kaleidoscope_. And 96 other things.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

n. if you like the sweet soul sounds of 'oh boy' and 'girls girls girls' i recommend
jay-z - 'poppin tags' and 'all around the world' and 'fuck all nite' (in addition to excuse me miss)(all from the 'gift' disc of blueprnit 2)
then there's kanye west's 'thru the wire'
i second ms jade 'big head' too and 'feel the girl'

and e crunk from spizzazzz says:
clipse - when the last time/grindin predictably this is the only 12 i bought today, for the "when the last time" instrumental because that's like the best beat ever. "grindin" is still the freshest thing out there (can we have some new freshness please?), but its also worth checking the imports for skillz - "v.a. banger": the next level of neptunes' bdp-hop.

so yeah, what he said about skillz va banger - most def worth a download.

minna (minna), Thursday, 20 February 2003 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i got the jump off after someone on ilm was talking about it,and it is really good...

robin (robin), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Cheeks also pulls the most inconsequential guest of all time on it. Random "heys," "ohs," and "yeahs" sprinkled throughout and then a really weak outro to boot! Finally, it all ends with a merciful fadeout as Mr.Cheeks keeps mumbling about something or other.

original bgm, Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally second The Clipse, particularly "Grindin'" and "When The Last Time".

On a completely different angle, try "Make Over" by Christina Aguilera. It's a successful version of the off-kilter rock-pop thing Pink was trying to do.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, CHRIS V YOU ARE A GOD FOR TELLING ME THE NAME OF THAT WAYNE WONDER SONG. I've been dying to find out what it was since I first heard it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'v.a. banger' is the most minimal song ever.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

its grebt innit, Dan?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

good times - styles
saturday - ludacris
big pimpin - jay-z
those were the days - aaliyah
i just wanna love u - jay z
last night - justin timberlake

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I'm downloading some more of these. Does anyone know the Chic-sampling mix of Brandy's 'Full Moon'? I think it's the Rascal mix, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. It's completely great, anyway.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mclusky, The World Loves Us and Is Our Bitch.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

recent-ish additions that everyone already knows about so why i'm posting this who knows:

baby ft clipse & birdman - what happened to that boy?
memphis bleek - murda murda
bubba sparxxx - jimmy mathis
missy elliot - wake up
jay-z - la la la
trina ft deuce poppi - get loose
t.i. - rubber band man
david banner ft pastor troy - fuck 'em

kinda tangential to the thread, but if anyone hasnt heard the (not new) dnb remix of lil kim's "suck my dick", then... make sure you do.

m., Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...

alison mc cabeay, Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

happens to me alot on this forum too :)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, come on everyone, where are our manners?

This nice person has taken time out of their day to say "hi" to all of us (even if she couldn't be bothered to actually read any of that tedious crap about music we keep rambling endlesly on about - and who can blame her for that, right?).

So shouldn't we at least return the greeting?

I think every single person on an ILM should send an individual e-mail to alison mc cabeay (ali4@hotmail.com), right now, thanking her and saying "hi" right back.

It's only polite.
