I guess this applies to most stuff where the bass is a key element.

(and 'metal machine music' :-))

Not so sure. I find hip hop generally sounds ten times better on hdphones.

Dud on headphones: anything with vocals on the left ear and instruments on the right ear.

I don't understand the S/D bit.

Anything classic that was recorded on 1 track, and as such has never been released in stereo.

i find jazz (50's, 60's at least) difficult on the headphones...rhythm sect over here, soloist over here

Buy better headphones.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:48 (twenty years ago)

hey Chewshabadoo I was about to say that.
Otherwise early beatles / anything with lots of hard panning is disturbing on headphones. it makes me feel lopsided.

three years pass...

Get a headphone amp with a crossover circuit. hey presto, weird mono problems and early soundstaging fascism solved.

Also, decent cans can do bass pretty well.

four years pass...

I listened to late 60s / early 70s music (Brel, Ripperton, Ray Charles) outside today on the patio with the laptop attached to an old loudspeaker I found and was blown away. Normally I use a boombox or computer speakers outside. It was a beautiful day today, though, so I thought I'd entertain the neighbors.

Sounds pretentious, but I'd forgotten how amazing sophisticated material can sound in a suburban backyard! The trees, wind and birds blend with the music.
