Best album opening songs

I've been reading ILM since it's inception and now all I seem to be doing is posting repeat threads like a cockfarmer. I can't believe we haven't had this one, it even made an appearance in High Fidelity! Anway, repeat or not, here goes. For the apparently dwindling numbers who still cherish the thought of the *Album*, then a successful opening tune is indeed much more than simply a decent song to get things going. So, name your favourites.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd go with "Sunday Morning" by VU, because it really puts me a good relaxed mood in preparation of what lies ahead. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" because that *always* makes me smile and it lasts throughout Pet Sounds. "Stop" is a good warning shot of what's to come on Ritual de lo Habitual. Not a classic, but Modest Mouse's "3rd Planet" is what drew me (and everyone I made listen to the album) into them. It also has the best opening lines ever (another thread, I know) in "Everything that keeps me together is falling apart". I gotta go High Fidelity and say "Janie Jones" off the first Clash. Oh, and "Teenage Riot" off DN is what got me hooked on Sonic Youth, so there.

Needles In The Camel's Eye from Here Come The Warm Jets by Eno.

It's just ace.

jamesmichaelward, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me? I'm not Kid A 's biggest fan, but I think "Everything in it's Right Place" is the perfect opening song. Muted, while seething with barely contained tension. Others include Low's words, the title track of Spiritualized's "Ladies and Gentlemen.." and maybe Pavement's Summer Babe .

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the closest we've come is 'Best first line to an album'

Nick, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Gimme Shelter" on LET IT BLEED

alex in nyc, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was thinking about nominating the Modest Mouse song, but I find the rest of the album severly disappointing, so I don't tend to regard the Mouse with much fondness. And I also think "Teenage Riot"'s accessibility ( when compared to most of Daydream Nation, at least) is a great entry point into that album.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like opening songs that wouldn't work if they were sequenced anywhere else on the album - "New Year"(Breeders), "Speed of Life"(Bowie)

tarden, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I really like the OPenng SOng to Imperial Bedroom "Beyhond Belief" and the fisrt song on COcteau Twins "Victorialand" FLuffy Tufts becasue its soo snowy and dreamy and leads you into a world of cloud land

-- Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's got to be The queen is dead for me. the singing from L-shaped room and then the huge explosion of drums and mozzer's wails, just perfect.

"Mercenaries (Ready for Way)" - John Cale

Joe, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Holiday in the Sun is a pretty good opener, what with the sound of boots, the riff and the ending whith that spectacular combo of mega- riff and "I want to go underrrrrr the Berrrrrrlin Wal" lyric.

Brown Sugar...it'sssss air guitar time again!

Omar, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Only Shallow" - My Bloody Valentine (Loveless)

"Urban Clearway" - Saint Etienne (Tiger Bay)

"Koeeoaddi There" - the Incredible String Band (The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter)

'The Mercy Seat' by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.

'Suzanne' by Leonard Cohen.

Johnathan, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hmm, 'Search and Destroy' on Raw Power, perhaps?

I don't think Kind of Blue could open with anything other than 'So What' either.

Jordan, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The Kiss" by the Cure will always be my favorite opener from them. The way that the track builds, with the drums becoming more complex as it goes on, the guitar solo becoming more frenetic, the synths slowly ratcheting up the volume, and the bass becoming more and more insistent until the entire thing erupts into RS' vitriolic lyric... MMMM!

The brittle stillness of "A Reflection" and the languid roll of "Out Of This World" make a good #2 and #3. Perhaps the most overrated of the songs which have opened their albums is "One Hundred Years". It's the weakest song on _Pornography_, fer crissakes.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No Action (This Year's Model, Elvis Costello)

Er, Back In The USSR?

I keep thinking of songs that are fantastic songs but then dwarf the rest of the album, such as Tom Traubert's Blues from Small Change by Tom Waits. Does this count or are we really talking about tracks that set up or represent the album?

Thanks for mentioning Here Come The Warm Jets - I had 'ambient' Eno in my head when I bought that album and it took about three listens to come to terms with it. It's probably my favourite Eno album now.

John Davey, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with loads and loads mentioned so far. But must add

Lloyd Cole, 'Don't Look Back'.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another great opener is "Is It Really So Strange?" from _Louder Than Bombs_. Also, it would be criminal of me not to mention "The Queen Is Dead" and "Fine Time". Or the mind-boggling goodness of "One More Chance", clearly the best PSB opener (only "Two Divided By Zero" gives it any competition).

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Bug Powder Dust" ("Clear" by Bomb The Bass) for being a totally killer track; "Herd Killing" ("Dead Cities" by The Future Sound Of London) for the same reason; "Drive" ("Automatic For The People" by REM) for setting the mood of an entire album. Lots and lots more, but I've got to go to bed now. . . . .

Dave, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

* "Welcome to the Jungle" on Appetite.

* "Straight Outta Compton" on SOC.

Talk about setting the tone... sheeeit.

boo radleys 'spaniard' on 'everything's alright forever' another shoegazing nominee 'breather' on chapterhouse's 'whirlpool'.

keith, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love how "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel" opens Talking Heads' More Songs About Buildings And Food with this burst of energy and enthusiasm that seems to be saying "whoa, look out, there's some really great stuff coming up that's gonna knock you out". It's not a classic song on its own, but it's one hell of a great way to start an album.

Also, "Sweet Water Pools" off Screaming Blue Messiahs' Bikini Red.

Patrick, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

La Fille De La Mort from the Young Gods' L'eau Rouge. The Classical off Hex Enduction Hour by the Fall. And..er..heehee...Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Oh and Debaser.

Venga, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

alrigtht, im gonna keep this short and sweet...first, i'd have to say Janie Jones by the Clash, the clash...i mean great song and is a perfect summary of our bloody lives. Then i have to add schizophrenia from the sonic youth Sister lp...couldn't this be the greatest sonic youth song ever....maybe. Then for somethinga little more recent...from grandaddy's the software slump...he'ssimple, he's dumb, he's the pilot...what a great start to a masterpeice record by grandaddy...for something also recent...3rd planet by modest mouse off the moon and antartica record...this song is what got me on modest mouse and off this chick. i mean the fisrt lyrics "everything that keeps me together is falling apart, ive got this thing that i consider my only art is fucking people over"...these lyrics are amazing and summarise some of our lives...and finally id have to say..."Summer babe" (winter version) off Pavements album slanted enchanted...the first song off their debut and greatest album...heil Pavement....

max dagenais, Tuesday, 19 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the first one that comes to my mind is "my name is jonas" off the blue album by weezer

Todd Burns, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Lust for Life", Iggy Pop's Lust For Life. (also works well with the Trainspotting soundtrack). Throbs with intensity.
"My Black Ass", Shellac's At Action Park. Feel that tone!
"Overcome", Tricky's Maxinquaye. Like being led down a dark tunnel from which there is no escape.

Dave M., Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Elvis Costello "Accidents Will Happen" ("Oh, I just don't know where to begin...")

I prefer Weezer's "Tired of Sex" to "My Name is...", probably because it's my favorite Weezer song. I remember hearing it for the first time and thinking "Weezer has keyboards. Weezer sings about sex. Dear god! What happened to Weezer?" It grew on me, I guess.

Keiko, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What? You mean "Thank You For Sending Me An Angel" is the OPENING track? My copy must be a Yemeni bootleg or something because "Artists Only" is listed as the first track! This has turned my whole perception of the album on its head! That would also mean the album ends on a "down" ("Big Country") and not an "up" ("Found a Job"), too! So I probably MISUNDERSTOOD 'everything' they were 'about'.
Is sequencing as important to an album as it is to a film? I'm serious.

tarden, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes Tarden, it starts with "Thank You", ends with "The Big Country". Sorry to be shattering your perception of Talking Heads there ;).

Patrick, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brilliant, another excuse to bring up Elvis Costello. Does Get Happy!! begin with Love For Tender and end with Riot Act or begin with I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down and end with High Fidelity? I know it's Love For Tender on the CD rerelease but which do you prefer?

John Davey, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'station to station', "once there were mountains on mountains and once there were sunbirds to soar with and once i could never be down..." - so agressivly desperate, perfectly established the rest of the records longing/failure thing. 'everything in it's right place' made me very excited ona first listen to 'kid A', a pity the rest of ther album was so terribly patchy. whatever the first track off godspeed's 'lift yr skinny fists' is called. 'armer in the city' off scott walker's 'tilt' 'one more time'!

matthew james, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Songs that act as advertisements for the album coming up are my favorites. This category may or may not include overtures and opening numbers on "concept albums, e.g. "Sgt. Pepper." At the moment, I can think of only: "Theme From 'Flood'" (They Might Be Giants: "Flood"), "Ping Pong With Hong Kong King Kong" (Momus: "Ping Pong"), "Sound Museum" (Towa Tei: Sound Museum"), and, to stretch the idea, "Giddy Strings" (The High Llamas: "Gideon Gaye"). There must be more.

X. Y. Zedd, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This year's been good for them, actually. All the albums I've liked a lot have had good mood-setting openers (bar the awful intro to the Skitz one, though "Domestic Science" as first proper track is a killer manifesto). "Packd Like Sardines..." (R'head), "Iron Galaxy" (Cannibal Ox), and of course "One More Time"! The jaunty first track on Bonnie Prince Billy's Ease Down The Road also lets you know you're in for a much more upbeat album than you might have been expecting.

Pop albums have an advantage in that they tend to put their best track - i.e. lead single - first. So the two pop CDs I bought this week - Britney's Baby One More Time and The Byrds' Mister Tambourine Man - both lead off with killer title tracks. It was a sign that something had gone awry with the Destiny's Child album that it kicked off with the old-news Independent Women Part I.

Tom, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Jesus died for somebody's sins — but not mine"

mark s, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's not my favorite song on the album, but Destiny's Child REALLY should have started with "Survivor". As it stands, they're making themselves look like they're just releasing singles in album running order.

...Upon reflection, that would be kind of cool, though, so forget what I said.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The obvious answer for me is "One Hundred Years" by the Cure (also a winner in the best 1st line category), because it sets the mood for the rest of the album so very well. For something a bit less bleak, though, one that hasn't been mentioned yet is "Super Bon Bon" by Soul Coughing. Always had a soft spot for that one, dunno why.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the smiths - "reel around the fountain"

joy division - "disorder" "warsaw"

led zeppelin - "immigrant song"

the jesus and mary chain - "just like honey"

"gloria," yes.

"schizophrenia," yes. "intro/brave men run" is great too.

"holidays in the sun," yes.

public enemy - "bring the noise"

goodie mob - "the experience"

rush - "overture/temples of syrinx"

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 20 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All good pop or rock albums have to start with a more-or-less classic song - IT'S THE LAW. But, I especially love "Next Big Thing" off "The Dictators Go Girl Crazy" for its absurd '70s-teenager overconfidence - "I used to shiver in the wings/ah but then I was young/ I used to shiver in the wings/until I found my own tongue/I sock 'em everywhere that I sing/ 'cause you know baby I'm the (boastful wrestler voice) NEXT BIG THING!". (later on the same album they assert - "You don't know us/ BUT YOU WILL!"...of course, 25 years later, NOBODY DOES.)

Magazine - Real Life

fernando, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have to agree with many of the ideas so far, especially 'Summer Babe (Winter Version)' and 'He's Simple, He's Dumb....' both fantastic songs that set the tone for the rest of the excellent songs to follow. I'd have to go for these pearlers as well:

'Black Dog' - Led Zep 4/Symbols album thingummy 'Astronomy Domine' - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 'Holes' - Mercury Rev Deserters Songs 'Airbag' - OK Computer

All superb songs that serve as a gateway into the respective albums. For what it's worth.

Tom E said:

I know what he means this time - but I think he's wrong. A 'good first track' is not the same as a 'good track'. In fact, leading off an LP with a very *familiar* track that's always played on the radio etc is - strangely enough - a way of being anti-climactic and dull; the track is liable not to have much impact. Better to programme the hit 45 second, or first on side 2, or whatever. (I just remembered: they don't have 'sides' anymore.)

True Blue - Papa Dont Preach

Stevie Nixed, Friday, 22 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

EVERY SINGLE Beck album, including his indie shit on K/Flipside, starts out PERFECTLY. "Loser", "He's A Mighty Good Leader" (from "One Foot in the Grave"), "Pink Noise (Rock Me Amadeus)" (from "Stereopathetic Soulmanure"- think Sonic Youth gone Chicago Blues... FUCK YES) "Devil's Haircut", "Cold Brains" and "Sexx Laws" are all excellent. "London Calling" (possibly the greatest riff ever), "Super Disco Breakin'" (50 cups of coffee and you KNOW it's on), "Angel" (which seems to say "if this sound is fucking with your head NOW, you best be turning your ass away from 'Mezzanine' and get back to your housey-house, kid, 'cos it's gonna get a whole lot heavier") and, of course, the aforementioned "Search and Destroy".

"One-Chord Wonders", Crossing the Red Sea
"Frightened", Live at the Witch Trials

"Suspect Device", Inflammable Material
"Reuters", Pink Flag
"Art-i-Ficial", Germfree Adolecents

So that makes "Definitive Gaze" - Real Life the 10th, then.

Dr. C, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well yes, if:
A: I actually particularly rated a Magazine LP before Correct Use of Soap
B: 10 wasn't such a cockfarmer's so-called "number"

mark s, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A : Yes, "Correct..." is the best. Howie cruising above everything. First 3 trax on "Real Life" as good though. Interesting how "Secondhand Daylight" has been rehabilitated after being too prog for 79 post-punkers (time changes, gatefold sleeve...)

B : Indeed.

Dr. C, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with "Love for Tender" from Get Happy!! and "Only Shallow" from loveless.

Also:

"Go" - Discovery of a World Inside the Moone

"Debaser" - doolitle

"Trash" - coming up (suede)

"rocks off" - exile

"Stop!" - Ritual de lo Habitual

"Some of Shelly's Blues" - Uncle Charlie and his Dog Teddy

"Grand Ole Opry Song" - Will the Circle Be Unbroken

"Sorry You Asked...?" - Gone (dwight)

"Venus" - Saturnalia (wedding present)

Blake, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoops; Alex already said "Stop!" I'll also second "Wouldn't it Be Nice." And you can't miss with "Janie Jones," even though much of the rest of the record is a bit blah (specially compared with London Calling).

And, at the risk of getting beaten up, I'd like to add "Rock n'Roll Star" from Definitely Maybe.

Blake, Monday, 25 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How 'bout..

"Hand it Down" from Jay-Z's 'Hard knock Life' - even though Jigga don't rap on it.

"This is" from Fushitsusha's 'Withdrawe...'

"Space is the Place" from Sun Ra's album of the same name

"Farmer in the City" from Scott Walker's 'Tilt'

"Bring da Ruckus" from the Wu's 36 Chambers

the opening track from Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin is a pretty fine song

Juvenile's "Ha" from '400 Degreez'

Suicide's "Ghost Rider"

Skip James' "Devil Got My Woman"

My favourite opening moment is from John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme', in which he sketches the prettiest sunrise.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 09:27 (nineteen years ago)

Possibly in the hip hop/R&B age - look how many rap/R&B albums begin with an "Intro" or a "Skit," or, bizarrely, an "Interlude." HOW CAN YOU HAVE A FECKIN INTERLUDE AT THE BEGINNING OF A FECKIN ALBUM????????

i think tom was pretty onto it up there with Iron Galaxy and Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box.

i don't know if i agree with this but its definately got weight: La Vie En Rose by Grace Jones. My boss always insists that that's the best opening track to an album ever. it was definately brave of Grace to open with a track which is sans vocals for the first 2 minutes. i don't think the mood of that song gets matched again over the course of the album.

i can't come up with any suggestions of my own without feeling like i'm forgetting someone else, but Let's Go Crazy by Prince always gets me pretty excited.

Anyway, the opening tracks to my 'three favourite albums' on that other thread are, on reflection, fantastic, and really set each record on its way. Namely, 'Six', 'Close To The Edge' and 'Leave Them All Behind'.

'Close To The Edge' is cheating, yes, but frankly, my dear,

serge gainsbourg - 'melody'

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Sunday, 20 August 2006 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, CH, extremely OTM! You've picked Isis and Opeth albums I don't own, but 'Ghost Of Perdition' and 'So Did We' are pretty awesome alternative examples. No Meth, though. :(

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 20 August 2006 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

'ghost of perdition', yeah definitely. my fave song from ghost reveries

and incidentally as far as isis goes, i've been spinning panopticon a lot more than oceanic these days, could be slightly better on the whole :)

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Sunday, 20 August 2006 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Not heard 'oceanic' so can't really comment, but may buy it soon enough. Virtually the entirety of 'Panopticon' (excluding perhaps the final track) is post-metal-art-prog (or whatever) genius, especially 'Backlit' and 'ALTERED COURSE OMG'. GOP is SO the best song off Ghost Reveries (The Baying Of The Hounds is the second-best...talk about front-loading! The groove it hits with about 40 seconds to go is Opeth's second-best moment (that I've heard, not heard much) behind the acoustic interlude in Blackwater Park).

Any 'if you like this, try out...' reccys for a Panopticon fan such as myself?

Scourage (Haberdager), Sunday, 20 August 2006 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm

well definitely pick up oceanic and marvel over a track called 'weight'
you might also be interested in a record called 'the eye of every storm' by neurosis. uglier and more frantic than isis to be sure, but still in a similar sort of gene pool

you could also check out 'hymns' by godflesh, 'we are the romans' by botch, and if you have time the side project of jacob bannon and kurt ballou from converge called supermachiner, which is excellent

i'm sure you know about sunn 0))) as well.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Sunday, 20 August 2006 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

With Godflesh, I was gonna start off with 'Streetcleaner', but fair enough. Have heard of Neurosis (in almost every single Isis review I've read), so may have a look at 'em.

teh Sunn 0))) I am pretty well-acquainted with. They're jolly mighty, but Isis is probably more my thang.
