POO: 1993

I've always thought of this as a very bad year for music. Everyone seemed to be obsessed with making terrible Dub-Techno records and it seemed tat all the decent bands favoured 92 and 94 to make their classic albums leaving 93 as a sabbatical period. I think the only albums I own from 1993 that I really like are Blur's Modern Life is Rubbish and Boo Radleys' Giant Steps (the latter being an exception to the rule as it's the best album EVAH).

Anyway, prove me wrong. Name a release or pop event that makes 93 a good year for music.

the best record of all time is from 1993!

Two-way tie between Velvet Hammer and Gentlemen.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I spent 1993 decrying the existence of a benevolent deity (after having been dumped quite unceremoniously with someone I still had to work with everyday.....*NEVER* date anyone from your office). I think I listened exclusively to TRADE TEST TRANSMISSIONS by Buzzcocks and the suitably bitter CUCKOO by Curve. Not a happy year.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Young at Finsbury Park was the excuse I needed to pull out my finger and move up to London. So I kipped on a friend's floor, went to the gig and started looking for a flat and job. Bizarrely enough I was so taken with the Finsbury Park area on that day that I decided to look for a flat there. Great gig as well.

At the time my favourite album released that year was probably 'Giant Steps'. Not sure what it'd be now.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

thirty six chambers came out in 93 didn't it?

Wu Tang--"Enter the 36 Chambers"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow....Neil Young at Finsbury Park!!! I was there....CREEM Magazine sent me there to interview James (one of Neil's openers, along with Teenage Fanclub and...er...4 Non Blondes). Great show. Great day, although I accused James' drummer of being a roadie. Nice goin'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah, 36 Chambers. Three-way tie.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is not convincing me that doglatin was wrong in is initial analysis. Cetainly as far as guitar music went (the only four things that have stood out are Debut and 36 Chambers and I *like* guitar music). Ned's list is particularly appalling.

Incidently, if we're going down this stupid abbreviation route, surely POOFTY is better?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Martian's is the best list so far!

"36 Chambers", but I'll throw "Doggystyle" into the mix as well.

Nick H, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry one is impossible. Four albums for four different moods:

sad and sentimental:
Gun Club - Lucky Jim

sad and passionate:
Tindersticks - Tindersticks

sad and suicidal:
Red House Painters - RHP I

only sad:
Idaho - Year after Year

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

An extremely good year. Debut, Frank Black s/t, Songs of Faith and Devotion, Very, Orbital 2, Republic, and Zooropa are all albums I adore.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The Joint! Thanks Matos...

runners up are most of DJ Martian, but wtf are the Pumpkins doing there?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

First one to come to mind: oddly, nothing did!

Red House Painters, Last Splash and Painful would probably make my top ten but I really hope there's something better from that year being forgotten. Will go look.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Found it, thanks to the pazz'n'jop thing on robert christgau's web page.

runner-up: Afghan Whigs' Gentlemen

Pick one only BY A LOOOOONG SHOT: Urge Overkill's "Saturation"! Yeee-fuckin'-ha!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, what about Liz Phair? Did everybody forget her already? Or do I just have the year wrong? (Another totally crappy year so why not.)

There was a bunch of pretty good rock en espanol stuff, though. (Santa Sabina, La Castandeda -- hey, I'm not making these up.)

But I'd probably go with *The Spaghetti Incident?* regardless.

chuck, Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that came out in 1992?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Exile in Guyville was 93

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz Phair was good, though I haven't listened to that in ages. I never travel far without a little Urge in my car.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

liz phair was just a pale copy of pj harvey. pj harvey without the guts but with a big mouth. totally overrated. forgettable.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

add in: The God Machine - Scenes from the second storey

[for some daft reason i had this on my 1992 list, back in sept 2000 on my blog]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Note to Ned,

Underground Lovers - Leaves me Blind

1992 release

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Spaghetti Incident, Live Shit: Binge and Purge, Beavis & Butthead Experience, Doggystyle, and Enter the Wu-Tang came out on 11.23. I vividly remember the night before that day. I was in retail drop-ship hell.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 18 February 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A tie between So Tough and the first Tindersticks album, really.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

six million album to die, choose one:

Magnetic Fields - Holiday (AMG's date discrepancy between listing and review)
Cocteau Twins - Four Calendar Cafe
A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders
Brian Eno - Neroli
Pram - The Stars Are So Big...
Khaled - N'ssi N'ssi
U-Ziq - Tango N Vectif

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cocteaus? Wishy-washy? You don't say! I go for Giant Steps just because not enough people are gushing about it on this thread.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Lynskey, it's certainly the ONLY wishy washy Cocteau Twins record.
I think YOU may have meant 'Enya'..........

russ t, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

SOUND OF WHITE NOISE by Anthrax is also 1993....and a mighty fine platter o' splatter it is, dagnabbit!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

How about the fact that in '88, both Anthrax and Metallica (who were like the Beatles and Stones at that point) came out with albums that incorporated that "oo-ee-oo" chant from the Wizard of Oz?

What's up with that? Some kind of weird harmonic convergence?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Cite the songs please, Mr.D.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

36 chambers

CLOSE runner up: dj hype - live on kiss fm (a bootleg, but pretty readily available if you have a p2p mp3 thing)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Whooops.... cross-post. I meant to post this to the Anthrax thread. Alex, I saw your post about "Sound of White Noise" and had a brain fart. I'll repost over there.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm, forgive the sheer predictability of myself, but...

Wu-Tang Clan 36 Chambers

Fishbone Give a Monkey a Brain...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Frayed Ends of Sanity by Metallica, Alex.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm very surprised that dog latin, being an Orbital fan, forgot Brown.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

As an album, _Brown_ is extremely overrated. Despite the screamingly-good songs on it, it doesn't really come together as a whole, at least not the same way that the following albums do (yes, even _The Altogether_; despite the fact that I don't think there's a single song on it which is better than the Brown-era material, I think it all comes together as an album better).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Siamese Dream by far.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

If the missus posted here she'd surely cast a vote for Giant Steps.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i'm listening to that dj hype record now and i'm really conflicted

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i totally fell in love with dolores voice on the first cranberries, alex in nyc. and i am not too embarrassed. at the time for me the musical experience was as intensive as portishead one year later. though there were not too many people who knew the cranberries in the beginning. and much more who knew portishead almost immediately after the release of their album.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I really hated Dolores's voice until "Zombie" came out.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

! Literally the complete opposite feeling from everyone I ever knew who had an opinion about them one way or another.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Boces!

Venga, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sebadoh III!

Venga, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, "Zombie" is my favorite Cranberries song! ("Salvation" is a close second.) I really loved it when she stopped singing all mealy-mouthed and just start shouting.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Zombie" is my favorite Cranberries song! ("Salvation" is a close second.)

My god! We've found something on which Dan and I are in complete and total opposition.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've said this before (in the face of much hooting and derision, I might add).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

global communication - 76:14.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

QUITE UNDERSTANDABLE. But I kid the bearer of Danjoy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

My fave Cranberries track is probably still Ling-herr.

But Zombie and Salvation are lots of silly fun. Damn, I'm half curious if I need to get their hits album. I'm surprised how much I can remember from their songs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 20 February 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone seems to have mentioned what I would have picked (either "Euphoria", "Spoonfed Hybrid" or "Quique") so how about...

that superb Global Communication remix album of Chapterhouse's otherwise dire "Blood Music"? And "76:14" was 1994 anyway, folks.

or (surprise surprise) Northern Picture Library's "Alaska"? (And if anyone's got it on CD, could they get in touch and burn me a copy?)

And to hell with it, "Honey Bee" by Moose - their most consistent album, by a long shot.

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorite Cranberries track has always been and will always be "Dreams", especially the Nickalicious-a-cappella-drunk-off-his-ass-in-the-backseat-of-my-buddy's-car-on-the-way-home-from-the-club rendition.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

if Dubnobasswithmyheadman was not mentioned yet, then Ace of Base -The Sign

"Linger" is still awesome. "Zombie" was awesome too, since I have memories of some of the cheerleaders ad-libbing to it while drinking sprite in the hallway in 9th grade as I was talking to them. Now it's kinda played out

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ooo moose is a great choice, it is co-winner with spoonfed hybrid. 4ad should reactivate guernica.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i dread to think what 4ad might think was suitable content for a sub-label these days

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 21 February 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex -
after fainting at my keyboard after you mentioned the...ugh... Cranberries in the samesentence as Portishead.... are yoiu taking thepiss about Delores? She's SO rough! I remember seeing her at some festival in a black body stocking...and...wait for it.... an EXTREMELY visible panty line. In fact, I thinbk she could've been wearing a nappy it was so obvious.... she reminds me of a two-bit council estate mobile hairdresser - you know, the ones who never quite get anything right, all plum coloured hair and cheap clothes....

russ t, Friday, 21 February 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

No doubt. MUST be Crowded House. "Together Alone" was almost as brilliant as "Woodface" two years previously.

Hey, you have your 1993, I have mine.

Actually, I did rifle through a lot of stuff that I didn't include because it doesn't date very well, IMO. Like Pet Shop Boys Very.

*brick flies at head*

I don't know much about jungle. Recommend me some tracks.

OMG BEST YEAR EVER

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Friday, 7 November 2003 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I did rifle through a lot of stuff that I didn't include because it doesn't date very well, IMO. Like Pet Shop Boys Very.

If you'd included a song off this, you'd have represented all the albums I mentioned up there. Obv your list is great despite that.

Yes, amazingly great year. Kenan's list is pretty fantastic, but then again with so much stuff to choose from, kinda easy ;-)

Kenan: no Tribe?

oops (Oops), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

that whole Prodigy 'One Love' EP was great - RHYTHM OF LIFE! why, WHY didn't it make the album instead of Full Throttle (tho that was great too), and the Jonny L mix of 'One Love' deserves to go on that thread about tracks where the final seconds/fade out are the best bit

stevem (blueski), Friday, 7 November 2003 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan: no Tribe?

???

"Award Tour" and "Electric Relaxation" are both on there.

THE HOUSE CREW "EUPHORIA (NINO'S DREAM)" OMG IT'S SO FUCKING GREAT KENAN U R INSANE!

You know, I downloaded that after reading this thread, and I loved it, but didn't include it because I figured that since I'd never heard of it outside of ILM, it would be like cheating to put it on my 'personal best' mix. Like, I'd be lying to imply that I'd always liked that song or something.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 7 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
I always associate the summer of 1993 with Tina Turner's "I Don't Really Wanna Fight."
