Anyone who owns "No New York"...

...want to type up the lyrics for me for the contortions "dish it out"? The only copy of it I own is a bootleg CDR sans lyric sheet, and lyrics are not necessary but much desired for use in my current project (for a music history class; pick an artist/movement you like and research its roots, present to class, hand out lyric sheets.)

thanks, folkks.

dozens of thanks.

ian johnson, Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

what a great song

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

so has anyone seen the james chance box set?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist, do you actually buy all these box sets? (if yes, then are you really joe millionaire?)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw it last night. $37 here in NYC.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

what's on it? does it have any of the Ze records or is it all "unreleased" stuff?

Amateuri$t (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't look at it too closely. Too excited that the Pitchfork reissue was actually out.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the Ze Records stuff likely to be rereleased any time soon? More to the point, is the first Cristina album out there at all? (or could anyone do me a copy/mp3s?).
I got her 'Sleep it off' album the other day and it surpassed all (high) expectations

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 4 Contortions and James White and the Blacks LPs plus 2 EPs. It sounds like a great deal. I had 2 of his albums in high school and regret having traded them years ago. I may pick this up after work today. I still don't like "No New York" though.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

And Ian, what's "Sleep It Off" like? I've always wondered about that one.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

stirmonster to thread!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought the James Chance box set, btw.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

which albums are on it? i can't seem to find info anywhere.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

So, how is it? And how much was it?

original bgm, Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Buy The Contortions", "Theme From Grutzi Elvis" EP, "Off White", "Soul Exorcism" EP, "Sax Machine", "Melt Yourself Down" EP, "The Flaming Demonics".

I've just played the first disc so far, but it's great. $38.00 (worth it.)

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Are the No New York tracks on it? I may have to get this.

original bgm, Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

No, they aren't.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Dang!

original bgm, Thursday, 20 February 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

how can i get no new york? it's always about a billion pounds on GEMM. i assume it's not being made anymore. the same goes for liquid liquid stuff, how can i get that?

Simon H (Simon Huxtable), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a Liquid Liquid compilation on Mo'Wax 3-4 years ago; don't know whether that's still available (might not be).

Nathalie found NNY on CD in Japan, but it was a bootleg. If you ask her nicely she might burn a copy for you - then again she promised to do one for me before Xmas and I still haven't received it :-(

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I looked it up on (US) Amazon last night just out of curiousity; the Japanese import appears to be currently available.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

''Nathalie found NNY on CD in Japan, but it was a bootleg. If you ask her nicely she might burn a copy for you - then again she promised to do one for me before Xmas and I still haven't received it :-(''

same here. but I haven't seen her so she must be rilly rilly busy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I know NNY can sometimes be found on S**ls**k. Or if not, I might do folks the solid of putting it up.

I spent too much on the Japanese issue of it while in NYC around New Year's, have been waiting for the right moment to give it a good listen.

dub you? well! (wl), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen the Japanese import cheaper than thirty bucks here in NYC (usually to be found at Other Music or Mondo Kim's), but I have seen a knock-off CD-R of it going for a reasonable price at Subterrenean Records on Cornelia Street.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops, I meant to say I've *NEVER* seen the Japanese import cheaper than thirty bucks blah blah blah.....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, everybody in the Contortions except for James hated Buy the Contortions and Off White - not that these were bad records, but they should have been a lot better and weren't nearly as good as what the band did onstage. The four Contortions tracks on No New York were far better, but even they don't represent the band all that well, since Eno mixed those tracks onto tissue paper, it sounds like. (Later LPs weren't with the band at all but with new hirees.) (And I remember hearing some Raybeats tracks and didn't think they well-represented that group either, and you can't blame James or Eno there.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got the two records Frank mentions up there, and while I like them both, do I really need anything more? I mean, a box set? I bought Buy first, got OW later, was somewhat underwhelmed by the latter and never pursued further.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

If I had those those two records I wouldn't have bought the box set. But since I didn't, and since tracking down and buying a couple of the original LPs would have been costly and time-consuming, I found the box to be worth it. As much as I like James Chance, a couple albums worth is probably enough.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

so Frank- does eno screw up no new york?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think eno "screws it up." i think all the bands are probably mixed better elsewhere, but also...with the possible exception of mars...they all released better material elsewhere too.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It would be hard to substantiate a claim that "No New York" has good sound quality, put it that way.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

from my prev post: ''but I haven't seen her so she must be rilly rilly busy.''

seen nath round these parts, of course.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean, it's fantastic. I don't have tracks 4 & 9 yet but hopefully should get them in a couple of days. The first two tracks are probably the best ('Don't mutilate my mink' and 'Ticket to the tropics') the last few are kinda slow and a bit skippable. Superb overall though. If you've got Soulseek wack it on and download those songs off me. Have you got the first Cristina album anywhere? Could I persuade you to rip it and fling the mp3s my way?

I'll send a cd-r of No New York / Downtown 81 stk / 2nd Cristina album / rip of Downtown 81 dvd to anyone who can sort me out with this album.

(btw, best No Wave compilation is the Downtown 81 stk)

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 20 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, I think No New York's sound works really well on Side Two (Mars and DNA), but not well for Side One (Contortions and Teenage Jesus), but in fact the performances on both sides were good, and I think Eno had something to do with that. E.g., I know that he told the Contortions to "just play something while I checked the sound levels" and the band, not knowing that tape was running, went into a totally improvised version of "I Can't Help Myself" (Jody and Donny had worked on the song before, and Jody just played the riff, and Donny joined in, and then the rest of the band, but the band had never played it together, and you can hear at the end James interpolates lines from "There Was A Time"). Best recorded performance by the Contortions ever.

Also, without Eno there would have been no album, since no one else beyond Lust/Unlust was clamoring to record those bands in 1978.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the dna stuff is arguably the worst stuff they ever recorded, tho...i mean the keybs are just annoying and not even in a skronky way

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If y'all keep badmouthing NNY, geeta won't want the copy I'm gonna burn for her.

hstencil, Friday, 21 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

haha okay okay: the mars tracks are one of the greatest recordings of the late 20th century.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked DNA's keyboards a lot; they were a disco element. (But bear in mind that I was friends with the keyboard player.) I also liked the bass playing when bass supplanted keyboard.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't listened to NNY in ages, actually, but I love that Mars CD on Atavistic.

Note: I am burning The Black Ark for jack cole right now, so I may actually get most of my burning backlog finished soon!

hstencil, Friday, 21 February 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, do you have one of those home stereo cd burners (i.e. not in a pc)?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes sir, Mr. Diamond sir!

hstencil, Friday, 21 February 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn I need to get me one of them. It'd be so much easier to copy stuff for people.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 21 February 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's easy, but I'm still incredibly lazy.

hstencil, Friday, 21 February 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I'm surprised no one's mentioned this, but Munster Records released "Buy" and "Off White" on a single CD with nice-ish liner notes and pictures. I got it today for $22 Canadian (the equivalent of two rocks and a banana).

alex in montreal, Sunday, 6 April 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that Mars complete thing is still in print on Atavistic...that thing is a must-have.

Anyone going to see Lydia with Anubian Lights at the Knit later this month? I liked that EP quite a bit.
