You might want to look for lieder by Hugo Wolf, like "Mausfallensprüchlein" or "Das Voglein."
Schumann's "Die Vogel" maybe?
My favorite German lieder are Mahlers "Kindertotenlider," but they are not pop at all.

Schubert is also done with pop sensibility by Japanese chanteuse (exec. produced by Haruomi Hosono out of YMO) Miharu Koshi.

i don't really care about the question posed by the OP, but can anyone help me out with some lieder recommendations? let me first say that i am incredibly ignorant about this entire genre. i didn't even know what it was until last week, and i certainly didn't realize that schumann/schubert/etc wrote lieder songs.
what grabbed my interest was a dollar bin record that my gf picked up recently called Slezak & Tauber Sing Lieder. it seems to be pretty obscure; it's not listed on allmusic or discogs. side one is Leo Slezak singing an assortment of Schumann and Schubert. side 2 is Richard Taubin singing songs from Die Winterreise. my very favorite cut is the side 1, song 1: Slezak singing Der Nussbaum:

as i understand, the lieder genre is characterized by piano+voice. the arrangements are usually relatively short - a series of 2-3 minute songs. i especially like the Slezak/Tauber recording because the singing doesn't get overly operatic - it's totally chilled out, some nice crackly piano (see the youtube above) and beautiful melodies over the top, sung confidently but not...old opera lady high-pitch champagne glasses shattering style. but when i seek out other lieder recordings, i can't seem to find anything that tickles my fancy.
can anyone point me to a particular singer, song(s), or release?

You can't go wrong with Fischer-Diskau.

ha, that's the first one i listened to after the the Slezak/Taubin recording! Fischer-Diskau singing Winterreise, accompanied by Gerald Moore on piano, to be specific.

If you're just starting out, some songs you could check out (in addition to Winterreise) are
Schubert - "Erlkonig", "Der Doppelganger", "Du Bist die Ruhe"
Schumann - all of Dichterliebe
Brahms - "Wie Melodien zieht es mir"
