this thread is a joke, right?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not a joke, gareth, but I'm having my usual semantic problems. What is trip hop, anyway? There's some agreed-upon definition floating around out there, but I'm not the sort to agree to something just because it's agreed upon.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

18. Smith and Mighty - Walk On By>

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that about nails it, actually, and it's exactly what I was afraid of. This is not a genre.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

19. "Extremis" by Hal ft. Gillian Anderson. Actually... where's that most pointless song ever recorded thread?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

23. Hot Flush - Red Snapper

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 19 February 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You guys are SO not numbering things! Aren't we beyond 100 already?

Anyway, don't forget Allison! "Pilots," by Goldfrapp

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh but really there's no way Goldfrapp (or indeed half the stuff listed on this thread) can be classed as trip-hop in any way...'Pilots' has no real BEAT for starters! the thread is a farce for sure but still we have some valid suggestions here and there

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I only go by them AMG genre classifications, instead of critical thinking or whatnot.

eleven months pass...
Trip-Hop is a fussion between Hip-Hop, Funky Jazz and Jamaican Dub, commonly whit a downtempo beat and trippy grooves... Maybe the 50% of chillout music is Trip-Hop. Is some kind of intelligent Pop.

Forget the past... I'm sick of Portishead, Massive Attack and Moloko... Try something from Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation or Zero 7

DJoG, Monday, 17 April 2006 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

What is trip hop, anyway? There's some agreed-upon definition floating around out there, but I'm not the sort to agree to something just because it's agreed upon.

Trip Hop = Acid Jazz minus one bonghit plus one hit of ecstasy.
I'd classify this stuff more as "Downtempo" (which is a more general term) than "Trip Hop", but thats a subtle distinction.

Forget the past...Try something from ...Thievery Corporation

*gags*

viborgu, Sunday, 7 May 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

five years pass...

Tranquility Bass dude has emerged from his disappearance - put out a new song via bandcamp on a pay-what-you-want model & released a bunch of pre Freak Flag demos here

I have always felt this dude's groove pretty deeply and this thread was one of the hits on the project name, so yeah

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 19 August 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)
