Have you ever 'gone off' something because somebody who had abysmal taste decided to like it? I don't mean mass success with an audience you dislike (let's just not even go there OK?), I mean somebody you know personally. Like, I know somebody who's into the worst crap imagineable, Massive Attack, Moby, DJ Shadow, that kind of thing (big into Depeche Mode, I said "What about the vastly superior New Order?" "I dunno, the guy can't sing" - and this from a Cure fan!), so I'd have fun torturing them with my rockist tastes. Until they decided they liked Van Halen and early Metallica! "Wow man, it's so tight and well-produced. Those flanges on 'Unchained' are so dead-on and precise!" Arrrghh you missed the whole point fucker! Then it was time for AC/DC - "'Powerage' is actually OK! It's got a good beat to it, gets me ready to go out!" (ie to a wine bar!) Well, this couldn't continue, so after a few feints and bait'n'switching w/ G'n'R ("I can tell Slash is a good player, he's got his own sound") & 'Reign in Blood' ("Umm...well it's pretty complex stuff, not really my thing but I can 'appreciate' [worst fuckin' word in the language] it" - starting to crack!), I finally buried the fucker w/ 'Locust Abortion Technician', Dillinger Escape Plan, 'Blow'n Chunks' and Ground Zero, which sent 'em scuttling back to their fuckin' Beth Orton shit. But really, if somebody with terrible taste finds even one square centimeter of 'common ground' then do you have a moral duty to pour salt on it?

Russ to thread to tell dave q how wrong he is for thinking Massive Attack, DJ Shadowow etc. are terrible, and me to stand there in the background nodding vigorously

i dont think that way - if someone i know who loves stuff i hate also happens to like something i love i'm usually pleased rather than angered - even if they don't quite 'get' whatever its really about or whatever - life's too short for that shit

"DJ Shadowow" = best typo-turned-portmanteau of the week. Also nodding vigorously. (And I like VH and AC/DC for actual good reasons, though I don't have time to explain them.)

I've noticed that people who lurve Slayer have the tendency to hate on my favorites for some reason. Methamphetamine damage?

The UK dental establishment has done to me what YEARS of meth abuse could not!

oh for fuck's sake - you would have to be seriously insecure to feel this way. Anyway your friend is probably just humouring you - "it's so tight and well-produced" is the sort of thing people say when they think something is shit, but don't want to offend .

But "it's so tight and well produced" is only marginally less offensive than "your mom just sucked my dick for crack"!

Is this Annabelle Lwin's new band?
