Well, Breakfast For Girls came out on Dreamworks and then I think Gizmodgery was a Spongebath-only release. Then Spongebath disappeared from the face of the earth, along with the twelve bucks I paid them for the copy of Gizmodgery that I never received, you bastards. I assumed the extended silence from Self was the result of a) Dreamworks dropping them and b) Spongebath's disappearance, culminating in c) Matt Mahaffey throwing up his hands in frustration, giving up music for good, and becoming a Gap model.

Julio you might like Lightning Bolt. They're quite noisy - one drummer and a hugely amped and distorted bass.

Blood Brothers -- Burn Piano Island, Burn (I was talking to their rep last week and asked her how the album was going over at radio, and she said that every DJ has actually been angry that they were being made to listen to it at first, but upon second listen, loved it. I think it'll take some patience from listeners to really dig it, but I think they will. Won't be a huge album (maybe it'll go gold by the end of the year), but they'll get on some big tours and get namechecked lots. The album is fucking breathtaking.)

The Rapture -- title unknown (It's not like they can get much bigger in the indie scene, but still a lot of people haven't heard HoJL since it's on vinyl. Not sure if it'll be on the album or not. I'm supposed to go to DFA to hear it soon and I can't wait.)

The last one's a tie for me:

Secret Machines -- title unknown (They're still hammering out a deal with a major, but once/if that gets settled, I think their record will do very well. Their Pink Floyd aping could easily sneak them onto classic rock radio (except CRR's nothing but fascists!).)

Carlsonics -- title unknown (Good, fun, playful garage rock (think Monkees) that comes off beautifully live, and just as well on record. Will be a critic fave.)

There is a free sample Lightning Bolt MP3 from the new one available on their website. It's not bad, but I'm not convinced that it wouldn't start to wear thin over the course of an album. I have to see if I can find a few more.

Yeah, I want to record it somehow. We've been setting this up for ages (for me to hang with/interview Rapture, watch them rehearse, interview James and Tim, check out the new Black Dice record, new Juan Mclean), but it's been getting bumped over and over.

Blood Brothers are from yr neck of the woods. Two vocalists: one sings, the other screams. They go at it simultaneously. The music is post-hardcore craziness. Just a barage of noise. Their older stuff was nuts, but kinda careless (download "Siamese Gun," essentially a legal drama in two minutes. Narrates a crime, arrest and trial. Really wild). The new album, though, was produced by Ross Robinson (Korn/Bizkit/AtDi/etc) and is much deeper. More shit going on. Plus they actually write melodies now. It's really, really good. Download the title track ("Burn Piano Island, Burn") or the closer ("The Shame," which is like a U2 anthem hardcore style). Those are the best cuts.

Lightning Bolt for me are one of those records I play maybe once or twice a year at best but I need it because only it can hit a particular spot. I have many such albums and hence less money than I should.

Yeah, they're on ArtistDirect now and getting heavy promotion. I have no idea how they'll go over -- the two frontman are basically cute, skinny drama fags. Plus there's non-white people in the band (which means they'll get AtDI comparisons, course)!!!

well yancey, you know me, contrived isn't a bad thing...it does sound a little willfully wacky in places (all those competing voices [even though there's only two])...still can't quite imagine this is getting radioplay, although i guess its really NOT that different from nu-metal (i'm reminded of that amen album from a few years ago, which was basically just camera-ready 90s hardcore anyway)...i suppose it must be like if you spent your adolescence listening to wax trax and then seeing NIN on mtv or whatevah...

This is where I say that I don't know what three rekkids I'm looking forward to but that it's good to read about stuff that I can now look forward to.

Okay, and just to chime in on A.R.E. Weapons... I dunno, they REALLY should've released that album last fall when the iron was hot instead of pushed it back like four times since I just can't help but wonder if the moment has passed. I saw them play live in Chicago last year and my reaction was first, "this sucks so much it sucks" to "this sucks so much it's good." So who knows? I just don't think they can top "Street Gang." Oh wait, it's on the album. Good thinking.

Clientele are alright but that guy sings like he's got cotton in his mouth.

Of records already out, I'm looking forward to hearing that Postal Service album and the new Asian Dub Foundation. I feel like there's a ton of records I actually AM looking forward to but can't think of at the moment.

two months pass...

I gave in to A.R.E. Weapons. Yanc3y's boundless enthusiam (Such as it is) pushed me over the edge. I'm djing (for the first time! ever!)in a month or so, and I am trying to figure out which songs I want in my set. But the Blood Brothers album has really stuck out for me so far. I like "...Denver Max". I know this question has been asked a lot on ILM recently, but...is there a Dizzy Rascal album coing out, then? When?
