I'd say Sloan, but that probably just goes for Canada. But really, who hates Sloan?

So, I'll venture Saint Etienne.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Saint Etienne's alot closer to the mark than Sloan

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly; I bet you're not Canadian.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Saint Etienne. Does that make me bad and wrong?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes; I'm sorry.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

So, wait. Lemme get this straight. You're "canonizing" a band that takes every pain to sound like it's at least twenty years old, and has a completely boring, limp-dick vocalist to boot?

No sir. I think it is you who err.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This is basically the same thread with the bar set a bit higher.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sloan are pretty well loathed by rock-radio-lovin' folk here in the praries. Not angsty or meat'n'potatoes enough, I guess.

I have yet to encounter anyone who hates (or will fess up to hating) Can. Which is odd.

gazuga (gazuga), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Doomie hates Sloan with a passion that I think is kinda cute!

Me, I I love 'em, but I would.

Oh, trust me, I know people who LOATHE Can. I had to be in a tourvan for two weeks with one of them!

kate, Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Can is a perfect example. Either loved or over your head, but no one who would be inclined to hate them can figure them out, or even be bothered to listen to more than 10 seconds of them.

I seriously fucking love them.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

This is basically the same thread with the bar set a bit higher.

Yes indeedy. With the bar set WAY fucking higher. Given the chance, ILMers will immediately begin talking about good music. But Sloan? Saint Etienne? Are you fucking serious?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Boy, I'm cussing a lot tonight, aren't i?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm almost tempted to pull a Sterling and start a new thread about how lame Canadians are.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It couldn't be any more of a waste of time than this thread.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

saint etienne sucks from the songs ive heard

esquire1983 (esquire1983), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fall?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 20 February 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

weezer

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 20 February 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You're "canonizing" a band that takes every pain to sound like it's at least twenty years old, and has a completely boring, limp-dick vocalist to boot?

he was talking about st. etienne - what band are you talking about??

minna (minna), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah Cracknell is pretty limp-dick, though

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

not Weezer, sorry

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

no, not Weezer. Maybe three years ago, they've have worked, though.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

um, no

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 20 February 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone dislike Zero 7? How about Groove Armada?

and i dare anyone to criticise Prodigy

By the way the one song that people I know from all walks of life absolutely LOVE, is "Ghostwriter" by RJD2

Trust peeps

Ellz, Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The choices on this thread are getting odder by the post.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Zero 7 and Groove Armada are great choices. Air, too.

russ t, Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Groove Armada simply because of their name.

And I hate Air because of the cover to 10000Hz Heroes.

mei (mei), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i know lots of people who kate Zero 7 and Groove Armada...i quite like both

Prodigy - people used to slag them off for being silly rave upstarts, now they slag them off for 'trying too hard to be offensive/provocative' and taking forever to release the new album - still probably my favourite band of all time tho, ha

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

kate? hate! hehe, not a freudian slip i'm sure

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree about the vile sleeve to 10000hz heroes - unspeakably nasty.

Groove Armada, before they decided they were a stadium band a la the Chemicals were great, though. Especially Northern Star and parts of Vertigo. I quite like the name....

russ t, Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Russ the quality of the bands has 0 to do with it, I think Groove Armada are OK, Zero 7 not - but it just seems entertainingly weird that somebody would think "oh come on EVERYBODY likes Zero 7"

The 10000hz Heroes album sleeve is beautiful, much nicer than Moon Safari.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone likes...

Daft Punk
The Beach Boys
Missy Elliott
The Smiths
Sly & The Family Stone

?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the 10khz legend cover is very tongue-in-cheek of course, Air celebrate their naivety and fascination for America and American prog-rock throughout the album it seems

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to run Zero 7 over with something big, heavy and unpleasant, possibly a massive fuck off combine harvester.

It's an impossible task, this one... so let's throw Roots Manuva into the equation.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Whether tongue or cheek or not it still looks REALLY ACE.

There was a spate of brilliant what-are-they-thinking sleeves a couple of years ago - Rooty too. All that Lemon Jelly shit you get at the moment is so boring in comparison.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

how the hell is rooty a bad sleeve??? i wished theyd used the inner sleeve pic though i must admit, thats even better!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not a big fan of the Smiths or Daft Punk, although I can definitely think of worse things to listen to.

Everyone loves Badfinger. Or at least they should.

hstencil, Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

?? I didn't say it was bad gareth!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i just like to misrepresent you tom;)

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b-but that cover is ace.

Daft Punk? (beat me to it - fuckaz!)
Cassetteboy?
Aphex?

dog latin, Thursday, 20 February 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

creedance clearwater revival

johnny cash

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we talk more about how Weezer can't work as a choice?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it would be hard enough to find single tracks - I must diagree with almost everytyhing mentioned above. except for Beach Boys

Joy Division - Love Will tear Us Apart
Stone Roses - Fools Gold
madonna - Into the Groove
M. Jackson - Billie Jean / no wait, Jackson 5 - I want you Back

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate "Billie Jean"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Groove Armada have improved with each album, they're still pretty shit but at least they now have some songs which can invoke dancing.

I'd say Basement Jaxx are one of the most popular acts around here, or Daft Punk, but I'm sure loads of people hate them too.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Weezer would never have worked. Sorry.

Wait. I'm not sorry.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

But.. but... Rivers Cuomo is the Brian Wilson of our times!

What? What's that? No, I'm not kidding! Fuck you!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Weezer = dud. And, sorry fellow Toronto FAPers, but I think Sloan is utter junk. "Who hates Sloan?" is a very funny question though. I mean, my roommates were once debating whether it is a bigger sin to be a member of Sloan or to be a child molester.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 21 February 2003 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Thumbs down on Badfinger and Daft Punk here.

Anyone rejecting Creedence yet?

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 21 February 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like all of stevem's suggestions apart from Daft Punk who I haven't heard. I also like CCR and Johnny Cash.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 21 February 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I like CCR okay, but only because I've never given them a second's thought.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 21 February 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll go for Johnny Cash.

derrick (derrick), Friday, 21 February 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

these threads don't work, because even if by some ridiculous miracle we did happen to stumble on a band that we all like, someone would instantly decide to hate that band just to fuck things up.

I don't recall anyone hating James Brown...*ducks*

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 21 February 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the pixies?

basement jaxx are a good choice, too.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 February 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

TOOL? PRIMUS?

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Saturday, 22 February 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

the feelies.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 22 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely nobody hates 10CC?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 22 February 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I more or less dislike Daft Punk and Basement Jaxx. As people I don't hate them, but I can't say fond of the sounds they produce. That whole dance thing is not my cup of tea.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 22 February 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Feelies and 10CC are great. Tool are overrated. Primus are.....ummmm.....I can't even summon an opinion on them. I don't HATE them, but y'know....ummmm..who cares about'em?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

feelies would be a good choice because i can't see anyone having a strong opinion about them because they were so absolutely mediocre. alex is right-the answer to the question lies in a band being completely inoffensive and uninteresting so that their existence is tolerated if not celebrated. i'd rather look at the cover of 10000HZ rhater than listen to the awful album inside.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"i'd rather look at the cover of 10000HZ rhater than listen to the awful album inside."

Truest thing ever typed on ILM!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 February 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, who hates - parlament? james brown? otis redding? pixies? johny cash? cummon.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 23 February 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who hates Parliament isn't fit to enjoy oxygen.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

alex is right-the answer to the question lies in a band being completely inoffensive and uninteresting so that their existence is tolerated if not celebrated.

i agree ... and we've had a quite active thread concerning the Dave Matthews Band here (the dictionary definition of "inoffensice and uninteresting").

i think everyone here has gone through a Pixies or Bowie phase, as far as i can tell.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Johnny Cash wins. if he's not liked, he's at least respected. and if anyone deserves respect, it's Johnny Cash.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the dave mathews band so uniteresting that i find it offensive

dyson (dyson), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

how bout Aretha Franklin...nobody hates her really

Stephane in Montreal, Monday, 24 February 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

let's make this tough..band that everyone likes, or at least doesn't hate UNDER 50.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I fuckin' L O A T H E Aretha Franklin.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there any band/act that consists solely of disabled artists?

Would we be annoyed if someone said they hated them?

mei (mei), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah 10cc were pretty neat at most times

what about the clash ?

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Motorhead & the Ramones

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I just discovered tonight that Sloan did "Everything You've Done Wrong". It's like my favourite song that they play at Lee's Palace! More than "Enjoy the Silence" or "Lovefool" even. Their whole career, and Noodles' obsession, is justified. Pedophiles are so much worse!

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 2 March 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, I fucking hate Sloan.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Sunday, 9 March 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)
