Anyone?

Bill E (bill_e), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Martin did a forward-roll and said something almost nasty about George Bush. Eminem didn't turn up. Davina swore. Robbie won.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 February 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

truly awful, although the extra beats they dropped over each track for each nominee were pretty cool

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 20 February 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i was watching the celtic match, but flicked over to the brits every so often
davina whatever her name is is one of the most annoying people ever

robin (robin), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds as excellent as ever, then! Cheers!

Bill E (bill_e), Friday, 21 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the dsp editing of the nomination clips was the best thing, kylie doing the blondie "rap" from rapture was very painfull...

jk@?___________________, Friday, 21 February 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

truly awful. knuckle-chewingly so. davina mccall
needs putting down. even the bits that weren't scripted
felt scripted. she kept calling it 'the most exciting night in british pop' and all that rubbish, and *nothing* happened.

in 1991 brits organiser johnathon king (for it was he)
told all the guests that if they mentioned the gulf war
what they said would be cut out of the tv broadcast
(lisa stansfield ignored him, she got cut out)
- not quite the same this year where *george michael* does
a virtual duet with ms. dynamite actually all about the
upcoming war. and it stinks.

interestingly, it looks like the streets were due to win
best urban act but they gave it to ms. d after he went on about
how shit the brits are and said he wasnt going.

piscesboy, Friday, 21 February 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes the secret awful truth about Ms D's gulf war protest - it was rubbish. NEVER DUET WITH A VIDEO!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i ws watching liverpool's fine victory in france but turned over at half time only to see david gray playing a piano and singing that one song of his. when i turned over after the match there was an interminable tom jones medley. this suggests that i didn't miss much (apart from liberty x and justin perving on kylie obv.).

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How about sugarbabes winning "Dance" act - what a joke! That award, with the Chemical Bros and Groove Armada worthy winners... should not have gone to a lame pop act. But then I was disillusioned with the Brits long ago. And yeh, Ms Dynamite sucks

Ellz, Friday, 21 February 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh Chris Martin did a mock impression of Justin Timberlake, and Justin grabbed Kylie's sweeeeet can - ONLY good things about this year's Brits, everything else pure TV hell

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

justin timberlake's attempt to do the high-register singing bit on Rapture was truly poor. there was a lot of tit-tape being used up that night my friend

Alan (Alan), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Sugababes are lots better than any of the other nominated dance acts but yes they should have won pop act instead. That said I like Blue too.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i would have LOVED it if Ms Dynamite had dressed up as Elton John for that (wish washy) G Michael collab.
The Sugababes thanked God and their stylists. (Thanked? i would have said "I am offering money for anyone putting her down.")

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, yes, maybe they were better but that says more about the other bands nominated. I was hoping for the Streets being nominated (and winning DUH) but alas NO.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

pop act was just voted for by CD:UK viewers I think.

what awards has The Streets won for OPM?

Alan (Alan), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the only one that matters:

ILM ALBUM OF 2002

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nathalie I agree re. stylists they looked awful especially Heidi! What kind of stylist can't even afford three Ramones T-Shirts?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Massive Attack will probably get nominated for Best Dance next year haha

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i think they make heidi look bad on purpose, check out the single covers and the round round video.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man, look at that tit-tape go - it was the freakiest show

Alan (Alan), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

They should have worn the bikinis made out of butterflies that they wear in their video for their version of that awful Sting song.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone mentioned Avril playing with three drummers yet? Three drummers! That's just plain unnecessary.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Avril did the guitar-leant-against-amp feedback thing as beloved of all Local Bands!! The girl knows her roots!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I thoguht there were nine drummers? Or six? Two or three tiers of three? Or were they screens?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

NME say there were 20 drummers

also, Miss Dya=namite actually married shockah, apparently

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Aye, she kind of corrupted the word 'boo' and the word 'husband' (I believe 'boo' is a 'street' term) in her thank-you bit. Is her next album gonna take years and then be deadly dull then?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 February 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

All I can assume from seeing the Sugababes winning the 'Best Dance' is..... the judging panel of the Brits, love 'em, well, they obviously think dance music is whatever's played at wedding discos and kiddie parties. Maybe someone should have a word.....

Didn't even watch the awards - but a friend of mine actually went.... apparently, Kylie aint looking too hot in the flesh (and Denise van Outen's apparently "minging"). Back to Kylie.... do we REALLY need to see that tired ass AGAIN? Snoresome.

russ t, Friday, 21 February 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but people dance at wedding discos and kiddie parties!

I've had better times at wedding discos, and to better music, than I've had at most clubs.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but thats not the supposed point of the Best Dance award

Russ i dont suppose you found it equally/more ridiculous when it went to Massive Attack a few years back?

i think Sugababes should also have won Best Urban

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I know it's not. I think it's a bit silly they were nominated but the "kiddie parties" comment was ridiculous.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Switched over (having had the sound turned down for the first hour while listening to the Cansecos - Toronto lo-fi avant-pop duo, highly recommended - for Uncut review) to hilarious doc about Foster & Caplin (the Blair conmen). Actually I couldn't decide whether it was hilarious or depressing that the guy who's going to shoehorn us into a war is so gullible.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 21 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Stevem....I do think it was ridiculous that Massive won it a few years back - but at the time, there wasn't another category they could've won in.... I don't think bands like Massive Attack were eligible for Best Band etc. around the mid 90s. Although, weren't they nominated for Best Band round the time of Mezzanine?

Sugababes are great - they just aint dance. As we know it. In fact, I think it's embarrassing that a country like the UK, which produces such white hot talent under the dance umbrella, can award the coveted Brit Award for Dance to a pop group. But that's the Brits for you....

Also, Dynamite.... apart from bearing more than a striking similaity in several ways to Betty Boo... she's now the official Darling of the Brits.

But so was Tasmin Archer some years ago, if you remember.....

Tom - you sound like my Dad.

russ t, Friday, 21 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What kind of stylist can't even afford three Ramones T-Shirts?

They could afford one Marilyn Manson shirt, at least.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

what was the story with all the drummers?
it didn't make it sound any different,as far as i could tell...

robin (robin), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Sugababes are great - they just aint dance.

Russ aren't you the guy who hates labels!

Someone whose favourite Pet Shop Boys albums are Bilingual and Nightlife knows more about the ways of Dad-ism than I - I bow to yr superior wisdom, son.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

''what was the story with all the drummers?''

yet more evidence that she has been listening to free jazz then.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a Marilyn Manson skirt, Ned. Unless that... thingy (corset? top? cummerbund? wha?) she's wearing is in some way Mansonite.

Best thing about Brits was News at Ten's item on Great War Protest Songs of our time, done in true Brass Eye style:

"Back in 1972, there was one simple question. (cue 'War' by Edwin Starr..)"

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It annoys me that pretty much all the best dance awards last year were for non dance acts, but then who did they have to choose from, it would have been nice to see what Medicine8 look like. X-Press 2 could have got a nomination if they just played Lazy all through their little blurb, everyone would go "ahhhhh yeah".

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Though obviously it would be cooler if they blasted out the bass rolling part of smoke machine and the stage exploded.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless that... thingy (corset? top? cummerbund? wha?) she's wearing is in some way Mansonite.

Yup, that little lightning thing is a Manson logo.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Thankyou, Tom..... you can get up now. Snivelling makes me retch.

RUSS T, Friday, 21 February 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

What an obnoxious prick.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

now now girls

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing about the Sugababes is the industry bigwigs (i just love that expression) probably thought they were being bang on the money for once like "hey look if we give it to the Sugababes then it reinforces how we were down with the big bootleg craze last year you know, most exciting thing to happen to dance/pop music and all that, sorted!"

obviously the only way to sort this out is to have MORE awards e.g. Best Pop Dance, Best Alt Dance, Best House, Best Electrobobbins etc/ - at least having ten nominations mightve been more satisfying (if Best Urban can, why not Best Dance?)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 21 February 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

yes best dance single by cosmos etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot believe no one has mentioned Tom Jones's facial hair yet. Fair gave me a fright, that did.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i hear justin timberlake was in the papers today, grabbing ALISON MOYET's ass onstage. it's all just more exposure for her album "Hometime" i sez (available in all good BRISTOLIAN record shops, incidentally).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 21 February 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, yes, that scared me too RickyT. Is it some mad demonstration of still having testosterone, is he going bald and compensating for it elsewhere?

My favourite bit was when Ben Elton came on, they played "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous", which, if deliberate, that was really fucking cruel.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 22 February 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben Elton used to be funny, i SWEAR

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it Alison Moyet's as he grabbed? I thought the girl's ass he grabbed looked far too puerile and wispy to be Moyet, but I could be wrong.

Ronan - life is wasted on you.

RUSS T, Monday, 24 February 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

puerile? wispy? life? what?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

...was it a long weekend, Steve?

russ t, Monday, 24 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

russ, do you like "hometime"?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 24 February 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
what was the story with all the drummers?
it didn't make it sound any different,as far as i could tell...

wasn't that Avril mocking the whole white stripes schtik ? about 50 extra cute boys on drums, clearly cosmetic, clearly impossible for them all to be drumming (ie _they_ were admitting they were miming, cf: Avril who was singing)

(wasn't it) making the point that having a cute girl who just drums is itself cosmetic ? (i mean, isn't that the white stripes girl only role apart from soap opera family member ?)

and Avril was wearing red and black, so to me all those drummers was naughty artistic comment on just how rawk the stripes really are (in Avril's language i suppose, the real rock chic with something to sing about was Avril)

is this labouring it, am i just imagining it ? how else is Avril's 50 conspicuous miming boy drummers explained ? i'm surprised she was allowed to do it, as to me it was an amusing mix of rock star excess (lots of miming extras at the awards show) and punk (create a controversy at awards show)

and i don't know much about her music, but as a stunt i think it rocked

george gosset (gegoss), Sunday, 25 May 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

she's said it was inspired by lindsey buckingham's video for "trouble"

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)
