If Led Zep's innovation = 'voice as 2nd ld gtr' then REM's = 'voice as 2nd rhythm gtr' (Byrds [really BOC] instead of Yardbirds [really J Beck Grp]), so maybe Stipe's image-takeover of the group and subsequent transformation into the Clinton-era granola mafia house band (ie shit lyrix + vox rise to top of mix and unfortunately everybody luvs it) is what drove Mr Ugly to drinking on planes?

Some would argue that the lyrics to "Texarkana," Mike Mill's number on "Out Of Time" show how ludicrously ordinary the band would be if he ran it.
