classic say i, cept for the stinky people.

honestly they should employ a man to go around with
a bucket and a big soapy brush. people *stink* in there.

agree with you on the stinky people, but generally I find record fairs to be fine, and if you're with friends, fun even. WFMU's fair is pretty fun, I dropped damn near $400 at it back in November.

I usually find them pretty depressing (`cos of the people....and the fact that I'm one of'em, I guess), but cool things can be found every now and again -- which, I suppose, is the point.

Classic - 'cept for the boneheads charging top dollar for boolegs.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 21 February 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand how someone can spend £50 on a Marillion 12" single but can't afford a bar of soap. Anyway boot sales are where it's at.

classic - the most of it

dud - band all the cd bootlegs, videosellers, pure new cd sellers

The last time I was at a record show I made some great finds, some old Gang of Four, Flamin' Groovies, Magazine and Soft Boys LPs. But at the same time, walking around the different stalls, I felt kind of diminished. You can't help but relate yourself to the middle-aged loner rifling through the records to your left.

Me and my mate went to one at the NEC last year. Spent a good hour or so just looking at the people with automated vinyl-rifling fingers asking about Lee Scratch Perry, then looking at each other and going "20 years time - that's you, that is."

Firstly what's wrong with middle-aged loners? Secondly just
because someone is unaccompanied while in the act of 'rifling'
(I prefer 'browsing') through some records how do you know
they're a 'loner'?

David (David), Saturday, 22 February 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

classic. you just never know what you're gonna find. dig enough and you'll find gold usually.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

dud. there's this stupid record fair i go to, where you have to pay in. and there's usually nothing good there. and anything good is not that reasonably priced. the highlight of this record fair was talking a guy down from 12 euro to 9 euro for a mediocre tindersticks album. how exciting.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 23 February 2003 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

While there's nothing morally wrong with being a middle-aged loner, it's just not a condition to which I aspire. Secondly, really, I'm just playing the odds.
I was making a point. It may be a bit of a stereotype, but there's some truth to it. I don't know if you've seen the Canadian documentary "Vinyl" - it kind of addresses this collectors' solitude.

i was going to go to one this morning but i had too late a night and slept in :(

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 23 February 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

they don't seem to have em here, bummer.
yeah i went to the WFMU one 1x, it was killer awesome

duane, Sunday, 23 February 2003 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I once bought a Black Flag promo alb from Savage Pencil at a rec fair, so classic. Haven't been to one in years.

No I haven't. I know the stereotypes have considerable truth but I dislike the idea that you can fit people into a category just because they happen to be looking at some records in a box. For instance I'm often to be found browsing in this way but I have ZERO interest in collecting. I'm only interested in things I can sell at a profit to someone else.

"I'm only interested in things I can sell at a profit to someone else. "

Hey - you're the reason I don't like record fairs!
