DUD! I once heard a story about whenever you entered wine bars in london you heard a slap bass like on seinfield.
If only it were true really.

Dan Brain, Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

fucking hell, i was considering a L42 thread yesterday! god knows why though...

'Tracy' gets stuck in my head now and the, its so wrong! 'Running In The Family' was a bit of a childhood anthem for me tho...ulp...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i am very pissed so excause the typos, not that i dont make them all the time anyway

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I gave L42 a nod in the sophistopop thread last week, and then pulled out their best of cd I hadn't listened to in ages and found absolutely nothing redeeming about it. Dud.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Feel free to takeover the thread Steve m.
Didnt Channel 4 (UK) once bring in the new year in the mid 80s with a showing of a Dire Straits & Level 42 concert from Wembley Stadium(obv a summer stadium tour recording)
I cant imagine a new year being worse than that, can anyone beat it?
All those who watched that concert must still be comatose.

Dan Brain, Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Pardon my ignorance... Whats 'Sophistopop'?

Dan Brain, Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

its pop music made by people who you'd think would know better, or just pop that doesnt feel intrinsically aimed at teenagers i guess

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's the thread in question: S&D: Sophistipop

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Boy, is my face red. There I was talking about albums I haven't heard in 5 or 10 years saying they should be "savored."

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah i see 'yuppies' bandied about everywhere. If yuppies like it does that make it bad? The Style Council gets called yuppie music and i preferred them to The Jam. Altho thats maybe because i was a teenager when TSC were about so it was my 'era'. Cant see anything in common with Level 42.
Actually my local 'oldies' station played Swing Out Sister - Surrender yesterday.

Dan Brain, Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Swing Out Sister roolz

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

If we were all yuppies in the 80s just now i wonder what we would be listening to.
Or even if we were yuppies now would we listen to similar stuff?

Dan Brain, Saturday, 22 February 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

you heard a slap bass like on seinfield

Hahaha!! Dan, I think this is one of the main contributing factors as to why I never got that into Seinfeld!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 22 February 2003 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I always see Kramer as a Tigerlilys fan for some reason. I wish i knew why!

Dan Brain, Saturday, 22 February 2003 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I kinda...like.. "Something About You", which was pretty much their only U.S. hit if you can call it that.

But I like it's more 'tronic/pop counterpart Ultravox's "White China" a lot more.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 22 February 2003 05:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Thinking about 'Yuppie' music. I dont think anyone thats a yuppie would listen to level 42 etc. I think thats very much a place in time. I expect theyw ould listen to some mellow mor electronic music. Moloko, Morcheeba, Groove Armada, Portishead, Fatboy Slim and anything along those lines. Probably the majority must have vocals.

Dan Brain, Saturday, 22 February 2003 10:54 (twenty-three years ago)

world machine is a better record than anything the jam or the style council ever made (ever)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 22 February 2003 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Moloko, Morcheeba, Groove Armada, Portishead, Fatboy Slim

oh no i'm a yuppie! (drops mobile phone and twangs red braces in shock)

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Diamond, get over the bass slap ! DL the seinfelds and enjoy !
I too was really put off by the bass line thing, and only got around to watching the show last year. Definitely worth it.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 22 February 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys do know the Seinfield "slap bass" is just a synthesizer, right?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 22 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

something about you is fantastic.

michael wells (michael w.), Saturday, 22 February 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, but what?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 22 February 2003 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

its the cologne

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

what is that? Old Spice?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 22 February 2003 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

isnt that Geri Halliwell?

Dan Brain, Sunday, 23 February 2003 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

Bimble is always in 1985 forever. I wouldn't have thought I liked this song anymore but I heard it again in some store or other some weeks back and was like "um...that's way cool(er) than I would have thought".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV75W2qacDc

Still I met some guy in England circa '91 who was INSANE over Level 42, and I couldn't understand going that far, either. To be obsessed with them was to miss the point or something.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 31 May 2008 13:04 (seventeen years ago)

seven years pass...

DUD.

The Dave Grohl of ILX (Turrican), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:24 (ten years ago)

At 6.22pm on a late winter's evening in 2016, ILX message board poster "Turrican" sat down at his study desk, switched on his new Dell computer, opened up the word processing programme that the computer had come with and began.

Szechuan TV (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:31 (ten years ago)

lol

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:35 (ten years ago)

In all fairness, there's very little else that needs to be said regarding this band.

The Dave Grohl of ILX (Turrican), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 18:41 (ten years ago)

Starchild is fucking boss; DJs in the 80s playing Physical Presence at 45rpm, also totally boss; anything after the mid-80s, not so boss.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:51 (ten years ago)

A lot of their best stuff is when they worked with Wally Badarou.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 24 February 2016 19:56 (ten years ago)

hadn't realised before that both phil gould and wally badarou were in M (of 'pop muzik' fame) before level 42 started

François Pitchforkian (NickB), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 21:16 (ten years ago)

Brilliant :D

The Dave Grohl of ILX (Turrican), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 21:55 (ten years ago)

I got a free ticket to see Level 42 once. Mark King did what seemed like a ten-minute solo piece with a bass with frets that lit up when pressed.
