now these are just getting silly

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought silly was the point?
i await the Debbie Gibson vs Anal Cunt thread eagerly

Frances Shelmerdine, Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Its just a bit of harmless fun. Doesnt need a serious point to it.

Frances Shelmerdine, Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Jam are one of my least favorite bands in history.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the box sets to both, therefore I am excused. But hold a gun to my head and Joy Division all the way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Weller didn't commit suicide, so he gets points for sticking with it. However, the remaining members of Joy Division formed New Order, so they get major bonus points. Weller formed the Style Council, so his points are hereby revoked.

The winner -- Joy Division!

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 February 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just my imagination or have I picked up a distinct Jam-hate vibe on ILM.I could be wrong(and jam band hate come to think of it).I love them to death,as they were an adolescent fave of mine and In The City was one of the very first punk(y) albums I ever owned.I still listen to them quite a bit.The Style Council is where I got off the bus. The first album is fine if you exclude the excruciating anti-globalization rap by the unforgivable keyboard player. Tracey Thorn ALMOST made up for it though. But I distinctly remember bringing "Shout To The Top" home and just staring in disbelief. What was that thing? I still don't know. It embarrassed me at the time and at the time I thought nothing of playing Ebn Ozn and Maurice & The Cliches singles all day long so I don't know why I cringed so. Musta been those horns. Those awful ultra-brassy horns that were like nails on a chalkboard.Play the wistful demo versions of Liza Radley or Thick As Thieves and then play The Style Council and you get a crash course in what the eighties could do to a man.Joy Division are perfect forever though, and not even Quincy Jones or Trent Reznor could make them less so.

Joy Division owns.

I never got into the jam

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Sunday, 23 February 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What Ally said. Paul Weller is one of the most grating singers I've ever heard: that po-faced bark of his always makes me cringe. They put out a few songs I like ("In The City," "A Bomb In Wardour Street," "Going Underground") but overall, a plodding, shrill, disgracefully retro dud. Never mind Joy Division, I'd rate almost any band you'd care to name above the bloody Jam.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 23 February 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

See what I mean about the hating and the not loving and the like? Is it a Brit thing? I always thought he was like a national friggin'treasure or something.Or an ILM thing?

Joy 1 - Jam 0

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Sunday, 23 February 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I respectfully disagree with the majority here. The Jam were far better than JD. Sound Effects is a *CLASSIC*, much more meaningful in the Grand Scheme Of Things (being playful here folks) than anything done by JD - excepting Ian's suicide. Not that I'm making light of suicide. I just mean that it's hard to make a statement more meaningful than killing yourself for your art.

The early Jam albums (yes I still have thenm on glorious vinyl) are treasures of mine. And "I don't really give two fucks about your review." :)

Davlo (Davlo), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Cox,

Though the remaining members of Joy Division score major points for hanging in there and forming New Order, the lose major points for not breaaking up before they started releasing utter drivel. Joy Division, howver, still wins because of the reasons you stated.

I'M NOT YOUR UNCLE FRANK, Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

actually weller should lose points because he didn't commit suicide.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! Two bands with singers I can stand but still can't believe are hailed!

I used to HATE the Jam too, but they've grown on me. Paul Weller can be a bit of a bore and chore (his solo stuff is the pits, personally), but there are indeed some great songs. I've gotten a little more comfortable with intelligent-macho bands like these guys and the Who. I've got All The Choice Cuts and Dig The New Breed and am pretty much satisfied (though if I went further I'd buy Sound Affects).

Joy Divison has also grown on me, but Ian Curtis is still pretty hysterical most of the time. Surprisingly duck-like if you haven't heard them before you read all the praise. But once you get used to that there are many dandy songs. I'm shocked to discover my own band sounds a bit like them (mainly because I let the bassist lead a lot of tracks and play similarly to Sumner via GVSB). I've got the two albums and Still.

Interestingly, both bands I'd never GET the box sets but if I had them, I'd keep them. Equally hard to pick but if I had to I'd probably go with Joy Division. I don't think I'll ever be in heavy-duty Jam mood where sometimes I want those echoey Hannett sounds.

I've gotten a little more comfortable with intelligent-macho bands

...because after all the Limp Bizkit you realized stupid-macho was a dead end? *cackles, flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

well, tough for me b/c i'm not nearly as familiar w/ jd as i am w/ the jam...but then the jam are one of my all time favorites. hear, hear on sound affects. beautiful record.

...imho, points are deducted form jd for morphing in to new order. bah!

Alan (Alan), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Jam had better pants. The Jam all the way.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

joy div had better dancing

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have any jam records, so i'm only going on singles i've heard. i like joy division, so i choose them, but my there's plenty of time for my mind to be changed (it will have to take plenty of time as i have no plans to buy jam records in the near future).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

No! I won't do it! You can't make me!

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

stupid-macho is usually a LOT more fun than intelligent macho, Ned.
