Ed makes us listen to Radio 4 on Sunday mornings while he reads the Observer. They've got some wanky actor playing a bunch of shit for his desert island discs, but THIS was fantastic:

3.‘Destination Moon’
Performer: Dinah Washington
Composer: Alfred/Fisher
Publisher: Columbia
CD Title: Dinah ‘62
Track: S1 T2
Label: Columbia
Rec No: SX 1453

I want this song played at my WEDDING!!! It's a jazz standard all about taking a supersonic jet to outerspace for a honeymoon on the moon!!!

How can I find out more about this record? Like, lyrics and things? And how can I GET A COPY so I can play it next time I DJ?

Can no one help me out with suggestions of how to chase this down? I know how to chase down rare indie records, but I have no idea how to find Jazz things...

kate, Sunday, 23 February 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and suggestions for other songs about lunar adventures would be appreciated so I could make a whole set about trips to the moon... Destination Moon, Holiday On The Moon (Love & Rockets) and Bike Ride To The Moon (Dukes of Stratosphear).

www.allmusic.com - Search for Dinah, search for the song, um, check amazon afterwards? If you can find out the album it's on, go to the library website for where I work, and search her name in the author field. We've got 10,000 jazz/blues/etcetera records - if we've got it I'll CDR it for you off the vinyl if you like. We've got these things of Dinah in our collection.

Fly Me To The Moon by Frank, obv.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 February 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitive Fly me to the moon is Astrud Gilberto.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, there's a version on the Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders soundtrack!!! This IS the song I want played at my wedding.

Not that I'm, erm, ever going to get married oh no, I'm not obsessing about anything or anyone, oh no, I am cool as a cucumber and I do not care.

SONGS ABOUT OUTER SPACE SEARCH AND DESTROY!!!

Extra points for anyone who can find any tunes about Jupiter

Track 14.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but I think that's about the god, Jupiter, and not the planet.

(Oh god, now I am thrown into a flurry of confusion... taking sides, classical mythology vs. astronomy... Jupiter was a CRAP god, he was an irascible skirt-chasing freak, not to mention just a pale watered down rockist imitation of Zeus, who, despite being a skirt-chasing freak who visisted gurls in the form of golden showers and freaky beastiality, at least got to play around with thunderbolts and stuff...)

kate, Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't make me start listening to Holst...

kate, Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, "Destination Moon" is a different song to "Fly Me To The Moon," but Dinah Washington recorded them both, and you can get 'em on her "Best Of" on Roulette Records which is £6.99 in HMV.

Marcello Carlin, Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I know that they are different songs! They are both great! if I can get them both on the same album, that would be AMAZING, so thanks mucho for the suggestion! As soon as I get paid (next week) that best of will be mine! Yay!

kate, Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(and a big :-) to see you, Marcello!)

what a lovely thread!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 February 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The version of Fly Me To The Moon that I really want is this weird syruppy JapanPop version that was the theme music to ... erm ... which anime was it? One of the really complex, cool cult ones... I think Evangalion or something? It was wonderful, the balance of this really dark, really metaphysical and deep anime with this fluffy, cute, sparkly theme. Really used to freak me out.

'Everyone's Gone to the Moon'-Jonathan King

The only Jupiter titles in my collection are:
In The Marketplace (Interlude)/Jupiter - Earth Wind & Fire
Jumping Jupiter - Nico Orts Ventin
Jupiter Jazz - Underground Resistance

As for the moon, in an SF trip sense rather than a "look at the moon/by the way it's june" type, and ignoring multiple Fly Me To The Moons, the only additions I can make are:
Moonwalk - Joe Simon
Rockin' On The Moon - Deacon and the Rock 'n' Rollers
A Trip To The Moon - Gary US Bonds
Trip II The Moon - Acen
Walking On The Surface Of The Moon - Wreckless Eric

Some other travel to alien planets tunes that I have:
Pullman Car To Venus - Blessed Ethel
One-way Ticket To Pluto - Dead Kennedys
Rock It On Mars = Terry Dunavan
Flight To Uranus - Nesta
Destination Venus - Rezillos
In The Court Of The Martian King - Sewer Zombies

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 February 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Though Destination Moon was fantastic, George Clooney also chose 'Artificial Flowers' by Bobby Darin (sp). I'll have Destination Moon at my wedding, but that at my funeral.

what's the one in The French Connection that the Supremes-like black female singing trio are doing when Popeye spots the drug dealers in the bar? 'Everybody's Going To The Moon' or something?

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, the J-pop Fly Me to the Moon was indeed at the end of every Evangelion. I wish they had sung it in Japanese though so I could learn the words and do it at jam sessions. I still think of NGE every time I play that song.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Note: My favorite Evangelion pasttime was trying to sing the English subtitled words to the (Japanese) opening theme song and get them all in. Try it, it's fun!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe my thread has been up this long and no one (no, not even me!) has mentioned YMA SUMAC!!!
