Tell me everything I want to know about the Flatmates. Tell me if you think they're lovely, or if you think they're toss. Tell me if anything on their singles is half as good as "So in Love with You." Tell me you can make me a copy of Love and Death.

I live just round the corner from Deb - she's a good friend. We formed a band together (called Cake...not the chart band) & recorded quite a bit of stuff after the demise of TFM. Anyway, the early singles are pretty much in that vein - I could be in Heaven is a personal fave. As for the later stuff, the b-side You're On my Mind really stands out. I think I'm the only person who thought Deb sounded like Dusty Springfield.

I can try & get a copy of the album if you like...

The Flatmates are indeed lovely. And a lot of their singles are very good--I really love "Happy All The Time."

I still find myself singing 'life of crime' now and again (not out loud).

Martin Whitehead of the Flatmates / Subway sells a fair bit of stuff on ebay. If you do a search for Subway, you'll probably find him. I believe he burns copies of 'Love and Death' with cover scans for a fairly minimal amount (NB: I'm not him! and I've yet to get round to buying a copy, but I shall).

I liked them, and saw them a few times (I lived in Bristol then). Sat drinking and chatting with them once or twice too. My pal Gary (in a band supporting them once, I recall, at the Thekla) was very keen on Debs, but I don't think he ever got anywhere with her. I always thought the bassist (can't remember her name) did a very good job of just about holding them together live.

I've bought some Flatmates stuff from Martin on eBay. Very nice fellow to deal with. I do think their stuff is patchy but when it's good it's great. I particularly like "My Empty Head" from the b-side of "Heaven Knows" (which I was listening to not 15 minutes ago, oddly enough..)

Oh man, I love this band! The "Love And Death" comp is stellar, always meant to track down whatever was left off. Don't say if when you mean when!!
