now they've gone too far...

I quite like Scooter. Really, I do...the 1993 happy hardcore aesthetic is cool, especially since nobody else does this kind of stuff anymore, and they're still as rediculously over the top as ever. I liked every single, from "Hyper Hyper" to "Nessaja".

And the new single "Weekend" is no different from any other Scooter tune: a sped up pop classic for a vocal hook ("Love...in a woman's heart..."), silly MCing ("We Are Not The Monkees!"), cheesy pianos, the works.

What is unforgivable though is the copying of that synthline of the ultimate dance tune, the biggest corker of them all, the Tyrannosaurus Rex of the "big hall" anthems, indeed: the Belgian monument that is "Strange World (2000 Remake)" by Push aka Dirk "M.I.K.E." Dierickx. Sacrilege! I demand the immediate bombing of Hamburg! A curse on Hans-Peter Geerdes, Hendrik Stadler and Axel Broszeit and their families! Aaaarrrggghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

if they did jaguar then i may join you in your righteous anger.

(i agree that scooter are brilliant)

(what's a "big hall" anthem? like a big room tune in the uk?)

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

welcome back Siegbran, I still think Scooter are crap, but I seldom hear them so I can handle it.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to hijack the thread for a sec but, ronan, you need the king britt remix of medicine8's rock music pays off.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the original, I must check this out. Have you heard that "I am ready to rockakakakaka" record yet? It's called Bucci Bag or something similar?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

no, but i picked up jockey slut today and it's single of the month. any good?

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it was amazing when I heard it but that was in a club and only once. I got JS also, I found it a bit dull, how many times can they use the phrase "and this tune is just SO now" or similar.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, "big room tune" pretty much covers it too...it's just one of those primal sounds that work best in huge German zeppelin hangars with 30,000+ people in them.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to hijack the thread but can I just re-state: Scooter are brilliant.

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

j.s. kind of lags behind onb the "SO now" front, i find (although not as far as some of the other mags). i laughed when i read the neil tennant interview when he mentioned "this label from germany called kompakt". the cd was a bit crap although the alzheimers track made me sort of laugh.

siegbran, that's a primal sound i'd like to hear. that track did nowt in the uk to my knowledge. it's that good, is it?

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 24 February 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't really imagine it doing anything chartwise, but I'd think quite a number of UK DJs might've spinned it at the time. It's a tune that loops and loops and loops a simple siren-like synth lead, it builds and builds like any M.I.K.E. track but the thing that makes it extraordinary is the production, it's a resounding, reverbed-to-hell mindfuck.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Siegbran if you like Scooter why do you consider it sacrilege if they steal something from Push? why is this not acceptable when it is to steal from Supertramp/something from 30 years ago for example?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't care about Supertramp/Peter Maffay/whoever they steal the choruses from. But Strange World is a monument, something that should be sacred. And yes, I know that's irrational and hypocrite and everything.

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 24 February 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i was quite annoyed when Public Domain AND Warp Bros vs Aquagen both nicked the 303 hook from Pump Panel's New Order remix - in fact Warp Bros are notoriously cheeky - they also ripped off the Porn Kings who had ripped off Josh Wink anyway - i suppose its 'economical tactics' towards getting lucrative production and remix work but still, shame on 'em - where the hell do these people go anyway? once they can afford 24 track mixing desks of their own do they fuck off to their villas in the Balearics and make dodgy ambient nonsense with Mike Oldfield?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Good old Scooter.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

They never retire, that's the problem. The whole clubbing scene is awash with old producers and DJs (oh sorry, "legends"). In all honesty, who really needs those relics from the 80s: Carl Craig, Sven Vath, Dave Clarke, Paul Oakenfold, Ritchie Hawtin, Frankie Knuckles, Masters At Work, Mauro Picotto, Laurent Garnier, Talla 2XLC, Sasha, Carl Cox, Andy Weatherall...

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll defend craig and m/a/w and, to a lesser extent, hawtin. don't have a fucking clue who talla 2XLC is, though.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I NEED TALLA!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

you spelled "tail" wrong.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, Germans really don't travel well it seems. Most notably, Talla founded the Dorian Gray in Frankfurt in 1984, does that ring a bell?

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god.
