piscesboy, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rock me, Joe" in "Monkey Gone to Heaven". Light irony rules, how else would I enjoy Jem eg

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

more of a lisped invitation than a great shout, but the intro to ballroom blitz...ready thteve?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"CC, pick up that guitar and...TALK TO ME!"

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

When The Velvet Underground play Waiting For My Man on Live From Max's Kansas City, Lou rips out "PLAY IT STIRL!" just before he launches into the solo. Which is cool.

Stephen Burrows (steveeeeeeeee), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

David Lee Roth's "Edward" during Women and Children First.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Okay, Marco, let's see what YOU can DO!" You know that has to be Adam Ant on "Friend or Foe." This is mostly great because Marco Pirroni then refuses to play a solo, opting instead for chunky-style acoustic power chords that anyone could play. The essence of Antmusic.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"HOW ABOUT JIMMMMMMMEEEEEEHHHHHH!" Lonnie Donegan on "Gamblin' Man."

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

takit' jeff!-stevie wonder talking book

ig's "yeahhh, my man"-funhouse...inspired by donegan maybe?..

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Patti Smith sounds so worked up and bossy in "Rock 'n' Roll Nigger" when she just bellows "LENNY!", it's funny. And then he doesn't even play a solo, he just sings the next verse. But he sings it pretty well.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

iggy on 'cock in my pocket'. "any time james.. any time!"

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"play it for me, guitarist" alex chilton to... (whom? chris bell wasn't on this track was he?) anyway, in "dream lover"

Aaron A., Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if you can top Ronnie Vanzant whistling for the solo to begin on pretty much every Skynnard song.

James Brown probably trumps them all, because he could get a whole big band to "hit it & quit it" or "give the drummer some" on command. Mind you if you missed JB's mark, you get fined.

earlnash, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"play it for me, guitarist" = Steve Cropper? Dunno, don't have the alb right in front of me.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

In the best Archers of Loaf song, "Freezing Point," Eric quite succinctly barks, "Guitar!" and out comes the solo...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Play the blues, Edge!"

The funniest thing Bono's ever said.

Jesse Fox, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Star's "Dream Lover":

I believe it might have been Lee Baker on guitar on that one...I think Cropper plays only on "Femme Fatale" (he didn't enjoy the experience too much).

frank p. jones (frank p. jones), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Carmen McRae calls for "Joe Pass!" on half the songs on The Great American Songbook. Mr. Pass then materializes with some of the bitchin'est jazzabilly solos ever recorded.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Angelo shouting "we got Spacey T. on the geetaarz mang!" on Fishbone's "Are U With It?".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"All right, George." (Ringo on "Boys.")

Burr, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

alex chilton also druggily mumbles "modulate for me andy" or something (for the bass player) on one of those lost years bootlegs.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"play it, steve [cropper]!" - sam & dave, "soul man"

tony bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

can't think of the guitarists name off the top of my head and I'm at work, but on Wayne Hancock's last album, A Town Blues, he calls out at almost every song for the steel player and rightly so b/c he's really great.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

one google later: Jeremy Wakefield he's terrific

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the singer out of the eggs saying in his wan posh voice "okay Rob, play guitar now brother" in their tremendous "Government Administrator"...

Conor (Conor), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rock 'em back, Sonic!" in "American Ruse" by MC5.

"You're my guitar hero!" in "Complete Control" by The Clash.

Aaron M., Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

For some reason, Vince Neil shouting out "Guitar!!" in the middle of the solo of "Dr. Feelgood" makes me very happy.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"talk dirty to me" poison. brett: "CC pick up that guitar and-a, talk to me!"

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a great moment in a rap track i can't remember right now (roots manuva?) where he shouts "guitar" and is responded to with utterly brutal scratching

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ringo during "Honey Don't":

"Ah rock on George, one time for me"

and then for the second solo.....

"Ah rock on George for Ringo one time"

xnelio xx (xnelio), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was during one of the Pixies' sessions for the BBC, Black Francis expands on the album version of the "Monkey Gone to Heaven" shout saying: "Rock me Joseph Alberto Santiago"

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Do it Robbie do it."

Evan (Evan), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Rolling Stones - "Little By Little"

Mick: "All right Keith, come on now!"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Gene Vincent - "Be Bop-a-Lula"

Before the first solo, he yells, "Let's rock!" Then before the second solo, in this beautifully pinched accent, he yells, "Let's rock AGIN!" I laugh every time.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Agnostic Front live at CBGB .....STIGMA!!

chad (chad), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ringo again, before the solo in 'If You've Got Troubles', desperately trying to salvage something from the mediocre take:

"Ah, rock on...ANYBODY!"

harveyw (harveyw), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Halen, "Could This Be Magic?" ("Ah, EDWARD!")
Not a shout out per se, but in Saxon's "Denim & Leather" he says "Maybe you can learn to play the bass!" followed by, duh, one-bar BASS SOLO

dave q, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Show 'em, Stevie!" Mudhoney, "Overblown"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

In Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians' "Tell Me About Your Drugs": "Tell me, Morris!" (This is exceptionally hilarious because Morris Windsor 1. is normally the drummer and playing guitar for this one song only, 2. is pretty much straightedge, apparently, and 3. keeps on playing exactly the same thing he had been playing, only without the bass).

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

On the bonus edition of "Forever Changes" you get to hear Arthur Lee give Johnny Echols a load of shit..."Echols man, I don't understand your trip man..."

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Spinal Tap in "Gimmie Some Money": "Go Nigel Go!"

The Jazz Butcher in "The Devil Is My Friend": just a simple "Guitar!" call

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
"C'mon girlfriend, shook me!" Celine Dion to Anastacia in the middle of their cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long". Or maybe it was to the guitar player, I think she was a Meredith Brooks type.

Arthur (Arthur), Saturday, 2 August 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I always smile when Angelo says "play it Goldfinger" to Kendall on "Party At Ground Zero".

Bryan (Bryan), Sunday, 3 August 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
She's calling for a harmonica solo instead of guitar. But--

Chrissy Hynde on "Middle Of The Road": "brrrrrrrrRRREOWWRR!!!!"

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Andrew Beaujon to Rob Christiansen in Eggs' "The Government Administrator": "Okay, Rob, play GUITAR now brother..."

Douglas, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

"Rock 'em back, Sonic!" in "American Ruse" by MC5.

...and of course, "Brother Wayne Kramer...Brother Wayne Kramer..." in the 5's "Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa"

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

We shouldn't be limiting this to shout-outs for guitarists. One that always sends chills down my spine is Big Joe Turner's "Blow, Joe!" before the saxophone solo in "Shake, Rattle and Roll."

Jazzbo, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

surely, "move over, rover, and let jimi take over" is the genuinely greatest such shout of all time. (assuming we're allowing for shouts where the vocalist and guitarist are the same person.)

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

What Mekons song is it, off the ROIR Live: New York record, where Jon Langford says "Mr. Robin Trower, ladies and gentlemen," and there proceeds the most haltingly half-assed slide guitar solo ever heard?

I crack up every time at that.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

We shouldn't be limiting this to shout-outs for guitarists. One that always sends chills down my spine is Big Joe Turner's "Blow, Joe!" before the saxophone solo in "Shake, Rattle and Roll."

If we're including non-guitarists, gotta include Iggy shouting "Blow, Steve! Bloowwwwwwww!" to saxophonist Steve McKay in the Stooges' "LA Blues." And of course every single James Brown shout-out ever.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

and every bob wills shout-out ever

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

"MISTER Zoot Horn Rollo: Hit that long lunar note and let it float."

I can't believe I was the one who got to mention this one. Zoot said in his book that it was one of his proudest moments.

ellaguru, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Come on, now. Rock and rollllll!!" (Dr. Hook - "Cover of the Rolling Stone")

"Guitar!!" (The Darkness - "I Believe in a Thing Called Love")

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

Not on record, unfortunately, but I once saw David Thomas point to a guitarist before a solo and say: "Make me regret every decision I've ever made!"

AKA Mr. Jaq, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

All Day and All of the Night:

Ray Davies: Oh, come on!
Dave Davies: Heh heh heh heh!
Guitar: Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!

AKA Mr. Jaq, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

"Aaaaahhhhhh PLAY IT FOR ME STUBBY FINGERS!!" - Adrian Belew to Fripp on the live Heavy Construkction version of "The World is My Oyster Soup Kitchen Floor Wax Museum".

"MISTER Zoot Horn Rollo: Hit that long lunar note and let it float."

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 06:38 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you for the opening; Mr Thelonious Monk to Mr John Coletrane, who alledgedly nodded off during the session, "COLETRANE! COLETRANE!", at which point you can hear him whirl back into conciousness as he tarts his solo.

factcheckr, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

"Tell me how you want it,
That's how I'll have our guitar player,
Roger Steen play it, listen to him!! [sitar fill]"

The Tubes, "Up from the Deep"

Joe, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ray Davies is saying 'Oh Get Em Off' in that one apparantly.
So i'm told.

pisces, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

Thank you for the opening; Mr Thelonious Monk to Mr John Coletrane, who alledgedly nodded off during the session, "COLETRANE! COLETRANE!", at which point you can hear him whirl back into conciousness as he tarts his solo.

During "Super Bad" James Brown would frequently shout "Coltrane!" at his saxophonist to egg him on.

Macca shouting to Jimmy McCullough, "Take me BACK, Jimmy!" on "Junior's Farm."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

Julian Cope on "No why no where no way no when"

"Do it, Donn-eye!"

However on the first line of the next verse he sings:

"Man that was shitty crap, go back and try it a-gain....."

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

I think my favorite of these is still Shanice's "Blow, Branford, blow!" during "I Love Your Smile". There's something really awkward about the way she says it, like half playful and half sexual. It's... weird.

Vinnie, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

No mention of the fantastically simple call for "Guitar!" by Rod Stewart on "Stay With Me"? Love that.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

A bit like the "Guitar" shoutr on "Fascist Dictator" by the Cortinas.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Gram Parsons gives the love to James Burton on the "Medley Live from Northern Quebec" from Grievous Angel. Also love it when he introduces "Hickory Wind" saying "Here's an ol' song from a long time back."

ellaguru, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

Not on record but a live memory - Glastonbury 1979, an 'all star' jam with Alex Harvey and Steve Hillage and I forget who else; they're doing Small Axe -the Marley song - and after the second chorus El Vambo goes 'Take it away Steve' - minutes turn into apparent hours........ eventually Alex, thinkly Glaswegian ' Bring it back Steve'

"Rub it on me, Duane!" -- Jesus Lizard, "Nub"

On "Super Bad," it's: "Blow me some Trane, brother!"

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

twelve years pass...

Gram Parsons's shoutout to James Burton in 'Cash on the Barrelhead' is a classic of this genre. it's funny how on one level he's introducing James to his (patently fake) live audience, but on another level he's bragging to his actual audience about how lucky he was to have gotten the great James Burton to play on his record.

I'm not sure if I'll ever figure out exactly what he's saying, though. "James Burton and his hot ẗ̸̰͉̹́̿'̵̱̣̅͠ç̵̿ͅḫ̵̭̯̈̆'̵̦̀͐j̶̖̾̓'̵̢͛̚͝r̵̨̉̂ả̸͈͙̕i̵̡͔̓̕ṇ̴̟̽g̸̭̩̟͑l̴̙̅i̶̫̱͒͊n̵̘̜̈̈́g̴̨͇̼̏̌̐ guitar"???

Latinamerican people surely recall this one:

“Echale vampiro”

The opening shoutout on Mana’s “Me Vale” which is one of their biggest stadium anthems.

Not a song I love but It’s the most popular shoutout I can think of.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 28 March 2020 06:15 (five years ago)

As Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash stumble through their Nashville session (Bootleg Series v. 15), Cash repeatedly shouts out Carl Perkins, not so much to incite Carl, it would seem, as to make sure listeners know who's playing guitar

No mention of "guitar hero!" from U2 at Red Rocks?

'genuinely great'

Mark G, Saturday, 28 March 2020 17:45 (five years ago)

I dunno, I think the singer making fun of his guitarist on a live album is pretty great.

Yanni Xenakis (Hadrian VIII), Saturday, 28 March 2020 17:49 (five years ago)

A less cheeky one is Neil Young's "Speakin' Out." "Alright Nils, alright," goes Neil, right before Nils's (second) masterful guitar solo.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 28 March 2020 17:53 (five years ago)

“C’mon Steve, get it!”
