Punk was cool when the sex pistol were doing it. I don't mind Green Day too much, but I think they ruined the genre, now it's just Bitney/Justin with guitars and lyrics with words like "poop" in them.
And what's with EMO? I hate it.

EMO is like emotional punk or something stupid like that, it's supposed to be more serious and little less pointless than punk, but it sucks, avoid it if you can.

Could you name some bands? Is Crass more emo than the Sex Pistols?

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The last punk band I genuinely really liked was Operation Ivy. I miss that band (in fact, they were already broken up by the time I heard them).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't agree. A lot of my fave albums of last year were almost all "punk" on some sonic level: Good Charlotte, Desaparecidos, Donnas, Distillers, Rocket From The Crypt, Kelly Osbourne, Weezer, All-American Rejects.

Has anyone noticed a trend in the life of the punk rock fan?

It will go something along the lines of:

I like Green Day and Blink 182.
I like NOFX, The Dropkick Murphy's and AFI.
I like the Dead Kennedy, and Bad Religion.
I like Black Flag, Minor Threat and The Germs.
I like Snapcase, Boy Sets Fire and Sick Of It All.

Occasionally we progress to:

I like Reversal of Man, Hot Water Music and Slayer.
I like Dropdead, Born Against and Men's Recovery Project.

(this is where 99% of punks 'get off the boat' and become indie rock fags due to college.)

If they DON'T become indie rock fags (term used with the utmost kindness; I promise) it's will become:

I like Moss Icon, Current and Swing Kids, and eventually:
I like Lightning Bolt, Ted Leo, Against Me and Orchid.

I'd love to see other versions of this chart related to people you guys know or see around you; this is what it seems most kids in New England go through in their punkness.

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How is Kelly Osbourne the least bit good? Name some qualities, I'm curious.

Kelly Osbourne is catchy, has smart lyrics, is lots of fun. It's not unlike the Go-Go's meets the Donnas.

Gotta reason she's not good? (Arguments invovled her AUTHENTICITY will be met with total disinterest).

Do not feed the trolls.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

troll

1. v.,n. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies" which in turn comes from mainstream "trolling", a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it. See also YHBT. 2. n. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1; regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by the fact that they have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll." Compare kook. 3. n. [Berkeley] Computer lab monitor. A popular campus job for CS students. Duties include helping newbies and ensuring that lab policies are followed. Probably so-called because it involves lurking in dark cavelike corners.

Some people claim that the troll (sense 1) is properly a narrower category than flame bait, that a troll is categorized by containing some assertion that is wrong but not overtly controversial. See also Troll-O-Meter.

The use of `troll' in either sense is a live metaphor that readily produces elaborations and combining forms. For example, one not infrequently sees the warning "Do not feed the troll" as part of a followup to troll postings.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ultimate far-end of punk = yes, crusty, in that way where your favorite band is three anarchist squatters in an condemned Italian housing project.

Naga, since everyone is just being sarcastic and not actually addressing you: most of us know what emo is, and it's not "new," although the concept of it you're working from is. Emo goes way back to actual hardcore punk and then what was called "emo-core" (see Rites of Spring and Hated mentions above) -- there was then a period where it meant spazzy but more-indie stuff like Cap'n Jazz, after which it mutated into much more pop stuff like the Promise Ring or all those Nebraskan bands. Point being, the stuff you're talking about is like the sixth step in the progression of what people call "emo."

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the chart reflected in someone I know:

I like the Dead Kennedys

I like Green Day and Sum41.
I like the Sex Pistols and the Clash.

I like NOFX, Bad Religion, and AFI.

I like Black Flag and Minor Threat.

I like System of a Down and Slayer.

Also, apparently at least as important as the music if not more so:

I like ranting about the evils of major labels, sellouts, and pop music. Also I pretend I live in a time before I was even BORN and go on and on about how evil Reagan is. (Bystanders are forced to take up aggressively pro-major-label, pro-sellout, pro-pop positions. The Reagan talk can be dealt with by eye-rolling.)

Also I do not like Rites of Spring but punk always disappointed me a little.

their name is "The Jealous Sound" and they're from Los Angeles. I thought there songs were somewhat sophisticated and I really enjoyed the singer's voice (there is a reason for this if you do a little research). i only wish that they poured on a little more of the screamo instead of laying back at about 70% so the chicks didn't get too scared.

There is isn't as much wall-to-wall classics as there were back in the late 70s and early 80s (forgive me, I must go get my walker and my metamucil) but just when I think that the neo-Punks have finally outlived their usefulness, some obscure neo-Punker puts out a 'choon that justifies the genres existence.
Then again, I am a sucker for punkish stuff, so maybe I'm just too forgiving.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 4 January 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I approach emo the same way I approach (gag!) "soft rock"...
"If yer gonna RAWK then RAWK, if yer gonna be a weepy sadsack, be a weepy sadsack! You can't do the same thing simultanenously*, these two goals contradict one another.

* = Possible exception: Robert Smith.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 5 January 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

* = Possible exception: Robert Smith.

there is NO exception.
he is not above the rule.

punk's long dead.
emo's hot on the trail to find out who dun it.
hopefully, emo will stumble over punk's corpse and rawk will turn around and open fire.

leaving pop as a witness, salsa as the 'getaway car' driver, and metal...well, metal's metal. and that's the way it goes.

Unto my cousins, Thrash and Death Metal, I hereby bequeath a few used riffs and a set of screechy vocals.
Unto my grandson, neo-Punk, I hereby bequeath a short list of instructions on how to emulate some of my less adventurous exploits.
Unto my other grandson, Emo, I hereby bequeath my secret diaries full of all the whining I did back when I was 13.

So as it is written, so shall it be sung.
