"Wichita Lineman": C/D

I think *this* is one of the most gorgeous songs ever written.

"And I need you more than love you / And I love you for all time."

That's a lot of love, and a lot of need.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought it was "And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time." Which I like much better -- all that sexual longing.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

My parents 8-track Glen Campbell's Greatest Hits was very important to me as a 6 year old. you just inspired me to run down to Aron's and buy it on CD. thanks!

You're absolutely right, JBR.

here's a "Wichita Lineman" thread from last month. One of my favorite songs fer sure. I don't have a recording/file of it so I sometimes listen to this one station for hours hoping to hear it.

Aaron A., Friday, 28 February 2003 04:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Damnit, I miss all the good threads! I should have been here a long time ago.

Ok, new thread. "Highwayman": C/D? Except that's Jimmy Webb, too, so maybe there's not much question. Has the man ever written a bad song?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

He's written at least two of my all-time favorites -- "Wichita Lineman" and "Up, Up and Away" (everything about the 5th Dimension version is absolutely HEAVENLY).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, 'Wichita Lineman' is definitely one of the best songs ever written. 'I need you more than want you' is so desperate, so fucking haunting.

We were listening to a 'Classic Country' Time-Life comp. at work one day; y'know, Jackson, Harper Valley PTA, Crying In The Chapel, etc. and Wichita Lineman was the last track. I must have played it a good 7 times consecutively(it was a slow thursday night..). Lucky my coworker was also into it. What a brilliant song. The baritone guitar solo; yum.

Anyone into Belle and Sebastian should have noticed the tribute at the end of their Photo Jenny. I'm so impressed everytime I hear it.

Don't know the Highwayman. Anyone for Galveston, though?

derrick (derrick), Friday, 28 February 2003 07:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

eek! argh! gah! classic classic classic!

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 February 2003 08:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know about thta one, but maybe it's only because I've lived near Galveston, and been there many times, and it's a fucking shithole. You ever been swimming, and come back with tarballs stuck in your pubic hair? Only in Galveston.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 February 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, obviously classic. Has anyone come across Shawn Lee's version of said tune, released towards the end of last year as The Incredible Shrinking Man? It's so great.

Higwayman is an extraordinary piece of work too. Galveston also. And the entirity of 5th Dimension's 'The Magic Garden'. I'd suggest Jimmy for the 'underrated lyricist' thread too.
The song of Jimmy's which seems to divide people the most is Macarthur Park, so I was gonna suggest that, until I noticed this:
Macarthur Park - Classic or Superstar?

Like I said, divisive.

Beautiful song. But I must stand apart and say that my favourite bit is the dumming in the fade out, delicious.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 28 February 2003 08:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes the drumming is very cool!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 28 February 2003 10:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Johnny Cash's cover is incredible, but the original recording of it seems very hard to find. I found it on this ultra-cheap "20 Great Hits" tape with a type-written sleeve. Needless to say, the lyrics sounds pretty mesmerising when intoned in that voice of his. "And I need yer more than want yer..."

His version of Galveston is on the same tape.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Friday, 28 February 2003 11:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Best Jimmy Webb cover = Isaac doing By The Tiem I Get To Phoenix, and, fuck it man, I could get to Phoenix from Devon by the time Isaac's done his spoken-word intro.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 28 February 2003 11:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic, but I've only ever heard the Johnny Cash version on American IV. I listened to it twice last night, and was under the impression music seldom gets better.

Vic Funk, Friday, 28 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Wichita" and "Galveston" both classic.

Hate those Al DeLory strings, though.

"Carpet Man" by Webb, done by Fifth Dimension, is a great song too.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not bad for a total "Starman" ripoff

dave q, Friday, 28 February 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can you believe I just heard this song for the first time? I'm at work, and it's been playing softly, so I can hardly give a thorough evaluation, but I think I like it a lot.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Classic, but I've only ever heard the Johnny Cash version on American IV. I listened to it twice last night, and was under the impression music seldom gets better.

My version doesn't have this. It's really annoying because amazon (.co.uk) initially listed it as having 'Wichita Lineman', so I ordered it from them (though it wasn't the cheapest). Then the copy that turned up didn't have it. And now it looks like you can't get it with 'Lineman' on. Where did you get yours, Vic?

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

give the Urge Overkill version anyday!

"Classic, but I've only ever heard the Johnny Cash version on American IV. I listened to it twice last night, and was under the impression music seldom gets better."

Ah, it does seem to be a bonus track on some versions of that album. Is it re-recorded, do you know? Wouldn't mind having it on CD, if it's the version I'm thinking of.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think that Roxy Music should have covered it. Yes, I would really like to hear that.

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

There's a Ray Charles version, from his "country" album.

jodi shapiro (burun), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, I was thinking of that one. Good enough take on it, his voice works. (And he had several country albums. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Once I happened to see Glen Campbell on TV, just him, a rhythm section, and a big guitar. He was amazing, he could really do it. I love "Wichita" and several of his recordings but those strings don't work for me. Too bad he couldn't have had a better guy than Al DeLory...he's also amazing on those great mid-'60s Everly Brothers recordings, I've been listening to a lot of that lately.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do you mean the Warner Bros. stuff? Does GC play on those records? They're great (better than the Cadence stuff, without question).

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes--the WB material. "Leave My Girl Alone" - era, '65-'67. Campbell does play on a lot of those records--as does James Burton. Some songs cut in Hollywood, some in Nashville, and all excellent.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Is that the sound of a wireless bleeping at the end of the choruses? Again, I'm at work, so I can't turn it up loud to tell for sure. Oh this song is nice, esp. the bass solo. I like how the chorus starts when you might expect the solo to keep going, all the more effective for the slight surprise.

Classic of course as are “Galveston” and “By the Time I get to Phoenix.” As a poster mentioned up-thread, Glen can really bring it with the guitar, a very versatile and fluid player. I'd love to hear an all acoustic CD. Rick Rubin, where are you?

word

meters cover of this is great. it's just this trebly guitar note at the start that you hear and don't recognise, then there's that tiny little deviation that makes you realise. the same thing happens with tav falco doing goldfinger but that's kind of more funny than moving.

i bought that Capitol Years comp so I could get Guess I'm Dumb, because I was a Brian Wilson fanatic, but I fell for Glen too, the entire first disk is great, and the highlight might be Morning Glory with Bobbie Gentry.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago) link

The Capitol Years is obviously essential for any serious Glen Campbell fan. But there are a few critical omissions, most notably his godlike cover of Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now which rivals Wichita for his best song ever. Another is Roll Me Easy, from the 1974 Reunited album he did with Jimmy Webb. Adoration is the best song from that to make the Capitol comp.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 11 March 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

highlight for me on that comp is "Country Boy (Got Your Feet In L.A.)"...or "Dreams Of The Everyday Housewife"...or maybe "Just Another Piece Of Paper"...oh, I can't make up my mind..now see what you've started!

Glen is a fucking legend. saw him live recently and he's still got it. also his latest album had a Velvet Underground cover on it, so he obviously wins at life.

Jamie (Jamie_ATP), Wednesday, 11 March 2009 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I read his autobiography, Rhinestone Cowboy, which I got at a stoop sale for a buck. I also read Neil Diamond's biography. And when they came to install an air conditioner in my brooklyn apt, they needed two objects to balance the AC's feet on out on the window sill, so I offered up those two books, which they used, spines facing out, so for the better part of 3 years, if you looked up to my 3rd floor window, you'd see the Glen Campbell and Neil Diamond books.

Lots of cocaine in his book.

oh, and another thing: the vocal track on "They'll Never Take Her Love Away From Me", I don't care what kinda of sound system you're listening to that on, it is right there, wrapping its arms around your shoulder like an old friend...

I usually wonder if people who post track ID threads are just not very good at creatively Googling things, but this one is killing me: I heard (and possibly own) a version of this sung by a woman who I thought was Judee Sill. Trying to find it just now, it doesn't appear Judee Sill ever covered this. So then I started thinking maybe it was Kate Wolf. Nope. Any help? It could very well be some obscuro private press cosmic country thing, but I have no idea and I'd really love to hear it again. In my mind, it sounds almost exactly like Judee Sill, but I also probably haven't heard it in 10 or 15 years.

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) has a big office building near my workplace, and some of the leased overflow space belongs to our pals at CERT.org - I get to go over there for meetings every once in a while.

There's a big statue called THE LINEMAN in the lobby. I need that statue more than I want it. He reminds me that I'm still on the line.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 16 November 2016 02:24 (eight years ago) link

It's a great song, and the sound of the original will never escape (for me) the association with James May plowing an old crappy jaguar around a rally track, but the lyrics are evocative to me because of my own life choices, career and marriage, and the imagery reminds me of my first real paycheck job, driving an hour on a two-lane drag across the Alabama-Tennessee border five days a week for $300 every Friday.
