This is what's known as an overmatch.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bee Gees.

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Bee Gees, of course.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bee Gee's all the way. not even a close one. they have incredible harmonys, yet it always sounds so simple. jive talking is still a out and out jam. i still have a hard time understanding radio/generalpublic's fascination with csn. i've heard more of their music on the local classic rawk channel than almost anybody except skynard, zep, n floyd. go figure.

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anybody heard the band the Thorns? It's Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge, and Shawn Mullins. They sound just like both these bands (minus disco elements of Bee Gees).

teeny (teeny), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh except it's not as exciting.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stand Y-less CSN. I'm not a huge fan, or even a fan at all, of the Bee Gees, but I'd take them over CSN.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Revisionists! Ironicists!

CSN had way-better harmonies. But it's uncool to like them.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Bee Gees clearly.
no irony. just pop.

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Brothers Gibb; no contest. CSN were just trying to get laid.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yes, obviously the BGs, but c'mon people, we're all selling CSN a bit short, aren't we? Graham in particular has a fine fine voice. Bee Gees had way better songs & attitude too. Actually, they had no attitude, but "no attitude" is better than CSN's.

harveyw (harveyw), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like CSN okay, just like the Bee Gees better.

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Crosby & Nash had an amazing knack for harmony .. and to deny that is just being hipper than thou. You can still say the Bee Gees were better at it, but you can't say that CSN were not good at it.

(thanks hs)

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's hard to argue that CSN have anything less than a fabulously gorgeous vocal sound. And though you have a damn good right to be sick of it, it's probably the most recognizable and virtuosic group vocal sound in pop (yes, even more than the Beach Boys). It's just their hippy-rich-kid-pseudo-"ROCK"-spiritual aesthetic which is embarrassing, undermining the rest of the work each of them did away from the group in the process.

And for the record, the records w/ "Y" on them apparently only have "Y" on the "Y" cuts. So if you like CSNY tunes like, say, "Carry On" from Deja Vu, you like CSN, kids.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it stupid to say that the Bee Gees have really fuckin' hilarious voices (I was damn near crying watching the video for "Too Much Heaven" or whatever that painfully long ballad from "Spirits Having Flown" was called)? I know it's a given, but Jesus CHRIST.

But yeah, the Bee Gees definitely had better songs on average and what not. Not to mention that the Barry's take on "A Day In The Life" was the only decent part of that Sgt. Pepper's movie (though "ADITL" benefited by it being the soundtrack of Peter Frampton's suicide attempt).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Bee Gees by a fucking mile

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bee Gees, of course. BUT: If you throw out Saturday Night Fever, it's very nearly a tossup.

Burr, Saturday, 1 March 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know enough Bee Gees to really decide, but I want to say CSN just for Judy Blue Eyes and Wooden Ships. In fact, that whole first album is damn good.

So, for now, CSN.

What Bee Gees should I look up?

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 1 March 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

CSN. Western sky music, all delicate and ding-ding-ding

j hendrix, Saturday, 1 March 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The drop-out in 'Jive Talkin', where there's just some perc and a synth siren, then a funky phased high C (kybd/gtr wah? have 2 listen again), then that synth-bass - "WOOOOOW, WAH wah wah WAH wah WAH WAAH!"

dave q, Saturday, 1 March 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Bee Gees! No Y = not as good. Though even with the Y it'd still be the Bee Gees.
