classic or dud? read this on dj martian's site. guy chadwick's solo record was a big dud so I am really not all that interested in this news. although terry bickers back in the fold might make it fun, as long as he has forgotten all the songs he wrote while he was in levitation.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Chris Barrus forwarded the info that there's a reunion gig or two soon. The mind boggles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah, North American tour news?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked "This Strength" from the Chadwick record. This is nothing but good news, but who knows if it will lead to anything good...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Mr. Noodles. In fact, they specifically said they're not going to pay any attention to you at all. They're mean.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:00 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, thats freaky, how the fuck do they know who I am? Is Chadwick an internet mentalist or merely a werewolf hooooooowl?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

is guy in his 50s now? or close to it?

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

he's mid 40's

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the info as copy-pasted from here.

The line-up for the band now consists of Guy Chadwick on guitar and vocals, Terry Bickers on guitars, Pete Evans on drums and a new bass player called Matt Jury. Matt is a local to Brighton and was brought in by Terry. As a live band they held their first rehearsal two weeks ago at Terry's home which he desribed as "really good".

The band have been working on a number of new songs including, Feed My Fire (written by Chadwick and Bickers), Gabriella (written by Bickers), Kinda Love, Already Gone, Whatever Gets You Through, No Black Cloud (which Terry describes as sounding like U2's "Mysterious Ways") and Days Run Away (which Terry describes as being reminiscent of "The Hill" and "Ray"). All songs were written by Guy Chadwick except where stated. The rehearsal was almost exclusively based on the new songs, though they did try out "Christine".

The band have not started recording together, or even demoing, but are keen to play at least a dozen gigs together before deciding whether to try and record together.

The House of Love will perform their first live concert in almost ten years on Wednesday 26th March in Brighton (on the South coast of England).

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Evans is one of my favorite drummers. that breakdown on Mr Jo is awesome. I wonder if he's responsible for the tuning as well? it's perfect.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

they should sign to Poptones for a laugh

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 1 March 2003 07:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, total classic, and I quite liked Levitation as well (all Killing Joke fans, they.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 March 2003 07:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed, Alex. Levitation (or at least the early EPs) were great, no?

M Specktor (M Specktor), Saturday, 1 March 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh - and you have to say that's magnificent.

the pinefox, Saturday, 1 March 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe House of Love will get some newfound huevos.

christoff (christoff), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope this means remasters of they're Fontana period. Thinking of all those juicy HOL b-sides that need compiling.

JC (JC A.), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Did this happen?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, new album and everything! It's excellent! There's another HoL thread.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Coming out 2/28 in the UK!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah - I just saw it sorry. I was confused by how long ago it was announced. Did they first play again together in March 2003 as scheduled above?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe they did, I think the "unjustly neglected" thread has pics.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh - I posted on that thread after you put up the pics. I don't think I can have been reading it all properly.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Either that or my memory is shot. Either way, it doesn't look good.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, so they're playing the ICA tomorrow? I'm suddenly into the House of Love again. Someone in London should go and tell me what it's like.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The album is in fact *really* good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 February 2005 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Extremely so. (I think I can speak more openly about it now. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically it's one that on first listening makes you wish for one clear mofo of a song but then after a couple of more listens just sounds really, really good, full stop -- it's a reunion that doesn't sully the name but instead finds a new, equally fine creative ferment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

It's very organic and unforced, you can hear them gently finding their feet again. I don't think we're going to hear as much of Chadwick's coke-fueled venom (which I enjoyed as well), but I certainly think there's more than a hint of the shimmering plateaus that only they were ever really capable of. It's unmistakably Chadwick/Bickers, but quieter, like some of their classic early b-sides. I really really hope this does well enough for them to continue - maybe they'll even feel "Safe" again, and get back to where they should have gone.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And wouldn't that be nice! The third song, in particular, is telling -- from the opening words I thought, "Hey wait, this is Chadwick talking about him and Bickers back then, isn't he?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard a couple of the tracks now. It's strong stuff. Not much boozin' here. Sounds cold stone sober to me. They planned to make a record and they weren't kidding about it, no sir! That's the only way I can describe it. It's determined, it's tight. It's refined.

First thought was: is there any significance to the fact that Kate Bush and House Of Love both released their last albums in 1993 and both are coming back this year? (well, in Kate's case, we'll leave it at supposedly?)

So...does this mean it's 1988 or 1993?

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

So I see they are still ignoring Canada and I..

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Why is this the first time I have heard anything about this?

Leon the Fatboy (Ex Leon), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

What, really? I thought I had mentioned it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

I almost keep forgetting this album in my evolving 'what's been great this year,' which is a severe pity. Then again the strength of albums by New Order and Low and others overshadows it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

House Of Love

Announce details of re-issue of debut album and Don’t Look Back show.

The House Of Love have announced details of the re-issue of their
seminal self-titled debut album on 24th September 2007.

The band are also set to perform the first album in its entirety when
they play London’s Koko on 13th September as part of the Don’t Look
Back series of gigs.

They are additionally set to re-release a compilation of early singles
and rare tracks on September 24th. This record, also self-titled, was
initially released in 1988 as an import only through Rough Trade Europe

and collected together the A & B sides of the bands first 2 singles,
Real Animal and Shine On, plus some previously un-released tracks. The
re-issue will also feature the A & B sides of the band’s seminal
single, Destroy The Heart, which didn’t appear on the original album.

The band’s debut long player was first released on Creation Records in
1988 following their much-acclaimed single, Christine. The 10-track
album, featuring classic tracks such as Hope, Man To Child & Love In A
Car was quickly hailed as one of the definitive independent releases of

the late 1980’s.

Long out of print, the re-issue will come lavishly packaged in a card
gatefold sleeve featuring the definitive original artwork plus
extensive new sleeve notes.

The band re-formed in 2005 to release the warmly received long player,
Days Run Away. This incarnation of the House of Love saw original
members Guy Chadwick and Terry Bickers re-united for the first time in
over a decade. This original line up, also featuring Pete Evans on
drums, will perform at the Don’t Look Back show in September.

At long flipping last.

I had to make that album myself for my mp3 player, cunningly rearranging the tracks from the recent-ish Creation compilation.

Matthew H, Thursday, 2 August 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Pulled my copy of the record out a couple of weeks ago and I had forgotten how good it is. I used to listen to it quite a bit about 15 years ago, so I was afraid that my memory would taint it. Nope. Salome might be one of the best songs of the era.

Bill in Chicago, Thursday, 2 August 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

which album are u all on about? the debut was deleted?

pisces, Thursday, 2 August 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

This one.

Bill in Chicago, Thursday, 2 August 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

And the Rough Trade one! Yay!

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

four years pass...

At the end of this piece about Insides:

I'm recording some new House of Love material at my studio, Church Road Recording Company with Terry and Guy.
