Maximum Rock n Roll Vs. Punk Planet - or neither?
I kinda like MRnR quite a bit, but am I the only one?

when i was a wee lad, MRR was pretty much all i could find. they had mykel board and stuff, so that's cool. and norb later on.

Punk Planet should just ditch their music coverage altogether and just be a politico/essay-mag. The former is suffering more and more, while the latter is more succinct and on the level. And I always love the Larry Livermore column "Life With Larry".

But I mean, for fuck's sake, Jawbreaker on the front cover of their latest issue? What year is this? 1994? Is there absolutely no other recent band worth a front cover? How many times does Blake SchwarzenRockStar need to be reminded how important he is?

Anymore I just read Shredding Paper...and Guitar World, Guitar Player, Keyboard, Home Recording, and Recording. But those last few are just because I'm a fucking gear junkie.

I should add that I'm just disappointed that Punk Planet's music coverage seems to not be progressing at all, because I really like their magazine, and just wished both sides could be stronger.

What I like about the non-music, more political coverage in Punk Planet is that there's no sense of urgency to get you over to their side of the world, so to speak. They generally report things and say "look, this is fucked up." They're open to exhibiting differing opinions as well in their letters section -- aside from the column regulars. (Larry Livermore apparently pissed off a lot of leftie punks with his "cabin in the woods fighting off bears" analogy in his 9/11 essay.. heh heh) They make it look so easy, and I wished more left-leaning publications took a similar approach without formulating this bubble containing their "agenda", which comes off really insincere, bloated, and annoying.

As for MRR.. I think others can more eloquently explain why they're annoyed with it moreso than I. But hey, you still get a ton of words for a small price, so you can't complain too much, I guess.

MRR has some decent info (e.g. the global 'scene reports'), albeit presented with an elitist attitude. Also they seem to review just about everything people send them (albeit not always very accurately). Punk Planet has better interviews, responsive editors, a useful website (especially the forums), and they pay their writers. Punk Planet might revere certain bands and individuals a little more than they deserve (especially as there are so many good new acts sprouting up, was an interview with Jawbreaker really a "once in a lifetime" chance?), but at least they show some respect for their subjects/audience.
That said, The Big Takeover is a much better publication for music coverage.

Dear MRR - I can't believe you printed a whole interview with those assholes Rusty Speculum. Everyone here in Turdwater knows what they're REALLY like - fucking macho jerks! I'm sick of so-called 'libertarians' defending your 'right' to publicise the antics of the latest jocks-with-guitars to rip off dumb suburban 'punk' kids (read EMp-Tee-Vee Clones) but as somebody who's seen them close up, I've gotta stand up and say something!
Ask anyone in Podunkville what the guitar player said when he broke a string in soundcheck. (Even HAVING soundchecks is a bit Green Day!) "Son of a bitch, I broke a string!" Me and Starla and Tigrette had been hanging around ALL DURING the soundcheck, so it's not like they didn't notice we were there before using the ultimate sexist insult (and yes, to all those so-called 'feminists' 'reclaiming the B-word' - this WAS guys saying it, remember?) - LET ALONE INTO THE MIC!!!
That day, I realised Rusty Speculum were just more sexist, racist PIGS!! They have no respect for their audience or society in general! There's already Maxim and Blender for stupid suburban white boys to read but why do you need to promote this kind of shit in MRR?

I never know who MRR is talking about, and not particularly interested. Punk Planet is expensive and the local record store rarely gets copies. Though if someone gave me a subscription of Planet as a present I'd gladly read it. So Planet wins.
