Really "Rock and Roll Music" vs "Fear of a Black Planet".

(Alt q - H Ford vs W Fard [alt q's evil twin q - R Nixon v R de Grimston])

"FoaBP" really used to irritate me, but maybe it wouldn't so much now, cuz I hated the spoken 'science bits' and the Munchkin voices but I figure, I don't mind spoken tech bits on industrial or IDM records and munchkin voices sound OK on "Aqua Boogie" and Zapp, so why would they bother me now? Have to give it another listen. "R&RM" OTOH is perfect (the way they change the whole instro setting with every verse is just one of the things I like about it), but then CB was the greatest figure in 20th Century music so what do you expect, and I WILL back that statement up if you provide enough a) coffee (for me) and b) Valium (for you)

MSP's cover of 'R&RM' showed a bit of the early 'spark' (ie whatever quantity which attracted the more 'literate' fans, spark sustained due to 'literate fanbase' achieving enough mass of its own to qualify as a essential part of band package), or 'intelligence', after all 'R&RM' was basically a 50s equiv. to Body Count's "KKK Bitch" [except it went to #8 on the pop charts - wow, the 50s were sure a repressed era huh]. But it still wasn't enough, because if it was Manics 91 doing a Chuck Berry cover they would've done "My Ding-a-Ling". (Which latter was responsible for "Frankie Teardrop", 'Metal Machine Music', Scott Walker's 'Tilt' [which I hate btw, but never mind, it's my problem not yours, sometimes 12-CDers say to me "Is there any music that YOU don't even get?" that's the one I say], some of the more 'tentative' stuff on Kid A, etc. But that's a whole other exegesis!)

Shit - no this wasn't meant to answer the other question, whoops. I actually meant it as two entirely distinct questions, didn't mean to associate PE/Eminem in an fashion whatever. The only factor common to both questions is Chuck B but that's incidental, really. Ignore one question while answering the other unless you're really into filling in alot of elipsii

dave q, Saturday, 1 March 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless you really DID mean 'Chuck D' as yr answer to the other question obv., sorry!

dave q, Saturday, 1 March 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

no I didn't. i wuz being 'cheeky' myself.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 1 March 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm ashamed to admit it, but Chuck Berry is the only act whose personal habits or personality have put me off their music. Yuck.

But PE would win anyway.

The beats and the lies are so dope, what more does anyone need?

Actually, 'dope' might mean bad (as in not good, not BAAAAD) but whatever.

Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good.

Nick H, Saturday, 1 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Now which is it? Because I'll take Fear of a Black Planet over "Rock and Roll Music," but Berry over D handily.

Have a guess.
