Is this vile?

Just came across this at NME.com:

"Super Furry Animals : It's Not The End Of The World? review

A bit rubbish by their usual high standards, here's single number three off 'Rings Around The World' and the straight-in-at-33 hits just keep on coming. Another New Year's Day gone by and, as the Super Furries remind us, the global apocalypse has been postponed again. With a truly painful falsetto and a string section, Gruff Rhys is here to tell us all to "Turn all the hate in the world into a mockingbird and make it fly away". Christmas was two weeks ago, loser. They shot John Lennon for less."
Jim Wirth

Just a malicious piece of writing... and dead wrong as well. That's a great single.

Anyway.

i agree, worthless hateful hackism at its 'best' - i LOVE that Furries track

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

The only thing the NME is good for is juvenile maliciousness. It's hard to get elsewhere. And SFA deserve it, being the most unidentified-as-mediocre band of the last six and a half years. What exactly is wrong with the review? Which sentence doesn't work? I don't like the word "truly". But come on.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

is it just me or is blueski getting more indie by the day;)

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

not really, i'm just a real johnny-come-lately for Gruff n' co

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I dislike that song and it's parent album. I have no problem with the review at all, and I'd consider myself a Furries fan.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

the review doesnt feel like a 'genuine' criticism, and is juvenile maliciousness really necessary/worthwhile in the music press? ok maybe it is, but i dont think SFA deserve it at all - i think Gruff pulls off falsetto better than most (bizarrely i used to dislike Gruff's voice quite a lot) men (take that Justin!), and do you not think that, rather than being over the last 9 years this band have in fact been one of the most novel and inventive guitar-based bands to have come out of Britain (oh okay, Wales) in that time AND be reasonably successful/popular?

the single in question is not especially great, but its a pleasant and timely song...a bit like that Norah Jones thing in fact, oh...riiiight...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

its a lot better than 'Rings Around The World' and 'Juxtaposed With U' i think, didnt like either of those songs AT ALL at first

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

rather than being over the last 9 years = ILM ate my sentence, sorry, i think i was basically suggesting they're not mediocre really, at least not compared to about a million other rock bands in this country

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

btw Gareth are you going to LOST tonight? dont think i can make it alas...

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently it sucks, I am not exactly sure why it sucks, but according to the journalist it does in fact suck.

How can you sum up an album in a paragraph or less? You might as well just put the petal to the metal and sum albums up by the sentence

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that was pretty funny, actually. I haven't heard the song yet.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 1 March 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm all for summing albums up in one sentance. It'd save me padding reviews out with acres of flowery shit and allow me to just get straight to the point.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a great song, but I would say that. However, isn't this single about a year old now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

bout 15 months yes

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 March 2003 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a mediocre song, probably why the reviewer couldn't put any effort into the review. time will reveal 'rings around the world' to be mostly useless. 'phantom power' will probably be worse if they include the new songs they played live this last tour.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 2 March 2003 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...
time has proved you wrong

unfished business, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

who me? yeah i think you're right ha ha

blueski, Monday, 19 March 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

this was one of those weird 'this actually cheers me up a bit' songs for me in wake of 9/11. bleh.

blueski, Monday, 19 March 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with eyeball kicks :P

louis are you going to bump [u]every[/i] thread mentioning this band? sfa fans be crazy persistent.

(full disclosure, finally heard "The man don't give a fuck" and what a right bag of toss that much trumpeted rock-into-"techno"-back-into-rock section is. liek OMG a 303! used completely boringly! *MIND BLOWN*)

fandango, Monday, 19 March 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

i gave a rave review to rings around the world! haven't really listened to it since much. liked the videos.

They can really crank it when they do it live, to be fair. I like this band a ton but I was never hugely fussed on this track in recorded form

DJ Mencap, Monday, 19 March 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

where is trumpeting?

energy flash gordon, Monday, 19 March 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

I agree with eyeball kicks :P

That is a nice thing to say, I think.

SFA are fucking depressing.

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

I don't bump EVERY thread, just the ones that arouse my interest. I'm currently in the process of 'discovering' RATW as the fucking monumental record that it is, and also trying to work out where on earth all the negative comments are coming from.

unfished business, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

I can see why some would find the falsetto painful.

There's not a great deal to the song either perhaps - my memory of it is condensed to about 8 seconds and I feel like that's all I need to remember about it. I don't dislike it tho.

blueski, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

SFA are fine. Not really necessary, but charming in the proper context. Like a party hat.

The review, on the other hand, is more boring than vile. The "loser" bit sounds especially awkward -- as though written by a 15-year-old.
