10cc vs. Badfinger

I'd like to set this one up... where do people stand on the matter? 10cc, calcluating, over-exposed pop pastichery & Badfinger an overlooked classic power-pop group. Or, Badfinger, average purveyors of power-pop, who get so much attention due to a coattails' effect from the Beatles (being on Apple etc.) & 10cc masterly, lavish pop artists who brought a fine irreverance to mainstream hit-making?

Or indeed anywhere in between those views... or indeed more extreme. I'd like to hear opinions...

Oh, Badfinger, yes.

I think 10cc are probably more overlooked than Badfinger.Badfinger routinely get praise and it's understandable. The first two 10cc albums though are amazing and I have yet to read a 50-page Mojo story on the making of them(maybe I missed that issue).People tend to think of the later 70's stuff of theirs without knowing how freaking weird and cool the sound and arrangements of the early records were.I especially love those guitar noises they used to get on stuff like "silly love".

I must confess I have only really heard 'The Original Soundtrack' of 10cc's... a pretty fine record, very amusing and lavish, yet maybe not completely satisfying and consistent... No matter how seeped into the back of my mind 'I'm Not In Love' was from listening to the radio years ago, rediscovering it again was astounding... an utterly perfect piece of pristine, inventive production married to an affecting song. Those vocal overdubs; how near the sublime can you get? In terms of 1970s singles that were 'massive' this is along with 'Dancing Queen', 'Name of the Game', 'Sweet Talkin' Woman', 'I Feel Love', 'Try Me, I Know We Can Make It' as genuinely sublime 1970s singles...
I have heard parts of 'How Dare You', i believe the album from after 'TOS'... yet nothing from the first two albums... so, are they well worth checking out?

I think 10cc do seem to miss out on full critical acceptance; maybe pigeonholed as a pop act who sold pretty well (and still do, i gather...) yet I have seen signs of the tide turning. But no, no Mojo or Uncut articles on them. ;-)

How about 10cc: masterly, lavish pop artists who brought a fine irreverance to mainstream hit-making; and Badfinger: an overlooked classic power-pop group? Why on earth does there have to be any either/or with these two unconnected artists?

i must shamefully admit that for me Badfinger are indeded overlooked.

however the first two 10cc's are among my favourites, although the smugness which was to later afflict the post Godley-Creme records is in some evidence.

David; well, i didn't say there had to be... i was just making a precis of positive and negative views i have heard about them... just to try and spark off a bit of debate. I wouldn't say they are entirely unconnected in that they are both decidely pop-centric artists; pretty much the same era - most acclaimed 10cc stuff is 1970-76 roughly? Badfinger likewise span 1970-74. Both are British, both had had the 'new Beatles' mantle in certain ways... 10cc's line-up consisting of four differing songwriters being an obvious similarity - rarely had this been the case but with the Beatles and the post-Smile Beach Boys... I would think comparisons can be drawn, and opinions made on 10cc, as opposed to Badfinger! :-)

I yhink I prefer 10cc. Both have strong melodies (which remains the most important thing anyway), but I prefer the polished and sophisticated 10cc approach to the more "raw and basic" Badfinger approach.

Anyway, two great bands, not very related to each other (except both made melodic pop)...
