TS: Peter Hammill vs. Bill Nelson (inc. VDGG/BBD?)

I've been pondering this one a little... two British maverick figures, starting late-60s/early-70s, both certainly with small, but very enthusiastic audiences, both nowhere near chart success - save 'Ships in the Night', am I right?
From what little I have heard - 'Nadir's Last Chance' and one listen to 'Chameleon...' for PH and 'Sunburst Finish' for BN (with splendid work on Sylvian's 'Gone to Earth') - they both sound very much to hold interest as artists... are there any people with fuller knowledge of their respective oeuvres who could comment on what they think of them both in comparison...?

i don't know anything about Bill Nelson, and have only heard the vdgg stuff of Hammill's (and i'm little more than a year into vdgg)

the vdgg stuff does repeat itself a bit, or maybe all the songs on each album seem to merge into one long multi-part vdgg jam -- Hammill admits that his then song writing m.o. involved earlier songs "cannabalised" for parts of later ones

so maybe it's Hammill's unique vocal style that puts me off what i've heard of his solo stuff or maybe it's just vdgg overload (for the moment), i just don't know about the PH solo stuff (whether it's with vdgg members or not) -- so i'm not one of the small dedicated group of Hammill followers Tom refers to, not yet anyway
