essentially the two sides of the maverick nickel that is Spike Jonze? what are your thoughts on either - avoid spoilers if you can - or if you think there's anything more worthy in mainstream cinema at the moment (UK) point it out here.

Just walk out about 15 minutes from the end of Adaptation, you'll be better off.

if the very presence of any sort or meta- or pomo conceit makes your knee jerk then avoid Adapation. I thought it was very entertaining.

jackass - best documentary of 2002.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 2 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh this thread was meant for ILE, but what the hell

i will probably end up seeing neither in the cinema but want to try and see both if i can...

also, WHEN is Charlie Kaufman/Michel Gondry's 'Human Nature' film coming out? ever?!

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 March 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Nature's out on video. I think it just got a limited release in the theatres. Like all Charlie Kaufman scripts it starts well and peters out. There's definitely some really amusing stuff in it but it doesn't really hold together.

Adaptation really fucked itself with that ending.

slutsky (slutsky), Sunday, 2 March 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the ending of adaptation is like, the whole point!

zemko (bob), Sunday, 2 March 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad point.

slutsky (slutsky), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

don't you have to dismiss the whole film if you don't like the ending, in this case? i guess that's just repeating what zemko said. but he sells out, that's the joke, and it's not much of a joke unless you show it. the punchline is that you have to sit through it, i guess, and it works for me.

Aaron A., Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

don't respond to that -- too much info -- i requested deletion

Aaron A., Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Nicholas Cage isn't in Jackass.

So, see Jackass.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 2 March 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

zemko otm.
he doesn't 'sell out'!

minna (minna), Sunday, 2 March 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Adaptation, never seen the point of jackass

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 2 March 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jackass, which has just become the best film ever. The penultimate stunt is the dumbest, most ridiculous, pointless thing ever, and, as such, abject fucking brilliance.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 2 March 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My main problem with Adaptation, which I think ruins the movie for me (although there's a lot there that I like) is that the movie ends with a great big gimmick, and not a particularly inspired or interesting one. It's not the first movie to do what it does (I'm trying to avoid spoilers here and talk around things), and for all it's cleverness, it's a cop-out, regardless of whether copping out is the point. Who cares if it's the point? It's still bad.

slutsky (slutsky), Sunday, 2 March 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The sad part is I thought the ending was more fun than the rest of the movie, at least when it wasn't sappy.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

well i went with Jackass in the end cos no-one else i was with wanted to see Adaptation - still i thought 'Jackass' was largely fantastic, the intro and outro sequences being particularly outstanding, had me in awe and scratching my head wondering how they did it, and also actually envying them even more for creating such memorable experiences for themselves unlike my predictable mundane unactive life at the mo - so it inspired me basically. the film itself did tail off a bit for me - but 'golfers horn', 'roller disco truck' and all the japan bits were the best, i was hoping the final round of stunts would be the funniest or most ostentatious but the randomness of it all works too i guess.

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 9 March 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

i only just saw Adaptation.
