Stackridge - C/D, S/D?

As it says; what are people's opinions on Stackridge? A 'lost seventies band', 'eccentrically English'... whom I expect to like... Are they any good, does anyone think, and if so, why...?

I always get 'em mixed up in my mind w/ Gentle Giant and Pentangle - they prob. sound nothing alike. Didn't some of Stackridge go on to form the Korgis?

I think Andy Davis (and poss. one other) went on to form the Korgis. Somehow or other I caught the tail end of Stackridge's career with the 'Mr. Mick' album (which I still have). Don't exactly know why. I think perhaps Nicky Horne (Capital) gave it some airplay and I liked the sound of it. I went to the Roundhouse gig and spent the whole time watching Peter Van Hooke's every move from the side of the stage.
I can still see his foot on the bd pedal and him glancing at me ('why is that kid watching me like that?').

I've got their single "Dangerous Bacon" which is very nice. String Driven Thing crossed with Curved Air or Steeleye Span. Happy, inventive, complex sound, tight arrangement. Features the line "Has your sister ever twisted under waterfalls?"

Yeah, Davis and another member went on to form the Korgis, who I quite like. Has anyone heard the Stackridge album, 'Friendliness', or 'The Man in the Bowler Hat'? If so, any thoughts?

That should read, 'The Man in the Hat' actually. :-) I probably got subconsciously mixed up with something like Dukes of Stratosphear, IIRC.

one year passes...

I discovered them more or less by coincidence when I went through various recommended "progressive pop" (RYM categories) recommendations on Spotify. All of their albums are available there. (As are the two albums by The Korgis, as part of some complete anthology collection containing everything they made)

three years pass...

I am falling for this lot, the album 'Friendliness' in particular, I hear shades of 10CC, Beatles (natch), Meddle era Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Roy Harper and slightly more contemporary people like Elliot Smith and late period XTC perhaps.

They are far, far better than their 'seventies also rans' reputation belies.
