Say something true and important that you haven't seen anyone say before on ILM. Be brave. Be bold. Be controversial. Be original.

And yeah I know there's probably already been a thread like this.

And here's mine: The big fat Dr. Dre from New York is not only cooler than the not-so-fat one from L.A., but also a better DJ/producer, and you can hear the truth on Original Concept's only LP, Straight from the Basement of Kooley High.

On a related note, Joe Higgs is the best talent developer the world has yet seen.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The antithesis of crap is a gourmet meal, innit?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Santana's best albums are live albums; live from the center of a crater in Hawaii with Buddy Miles, live from Japan, they're all bad-ass.

A lot of Miles Davis' best post-Bitches Brew 70s albums were recorded live: Live: Evil, Agharta and Pangaea, the Philmore series.

The Roots Come Alive and Fishbone's Live at the Temple Bar & More are some more recent examples of live-albums-what-don't-suck.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The antithesis of crap is a gourmet meal, innit?

Siamese Dream eats Loveless alive.

You know, there are many days when I would agree with you. But then I would note that Billy Corgan himself admits he's ripping that off, so in your place, you. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

sure, he's ripping it off. But genius steals, and Siamese Dream is genius. I'm probably the only guy in the world who owns all the No Neck, Faust and Arthur Doyle records and counts Siamese Dream very high on my all time top 5. I've read extensively about it. If I ever make a record a tenth as good as that, I will retire. Shoegazers and ecstasy gobblers genuflect at Loveless, but how many songs can you name off the top of your head? I like it VERY MUCH, of course, but dare I say it is a bit overrated? It's a ripple that made a wave.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

*bows* As someone who obsessively chases down things like Muslimgauze and Jandek releases and also ranked SD very high (but not as high as another) on a list, I sympathize with your situation greatly. ;-)

But when it comes to a record with the likes of "Blown a Wish," "Sometimes," "Only Shallow," "Touched," "To Here Knows When," "When You Sleep" -- and of course "Soon," a song that, as I've said on the boards before, literally caused time to stop and me to freeze gaping the first time I heard it in 1990 -- on it, there is no competition. There can be and there will be only one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

well, we won't settle this tonight, but I will meet you halfway and allow that Isn't Anything slays Gish.

and right on about Bryn and "Spencer" - two faves of mine as well

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

how many songs can you name off the top of your head?

All of them from _Loveless_; and Soma, Mayonnaise, Today, Disarm, and Geek from _SD_ (which I've owned for 10 years).

Are there not 3-4 weak tracks on _SD_? I only remember "Disarm" cuz it was a hit.

Aaron A., Thursday, 6 March 2003 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there not 3-4 weak tracks on _SD_?

No. Thank you, drive through. ;-)

I will meet you halfway and allow that Isn't Anything slays Gish.

*bows* We are in agreement. Gish is half a great album then slows down.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron: what 3-4 songs on Siamese Dream don't you like?? Not to be fanatical about it, but that record is perfect.

and the second side of Neil's On The Beach, while we're on the subject, is the only other "perfect" thing I can think of off the top of my head

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron: what 3-4 songs on Siamese Dream don't you like?? Not to be fanatical about it, but that record is perfect.

NR: You know, there are many days when I would agree with you. But then I would note that Billy Corgan himself admits he's ripping that off, so in your place, you. ;-)
Bah! If he had said Gish eats Loveless alive, I might have to waffle back and forth. But Siamese Dream is not better than Loveless by any stretch of the imagination.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

SPIRIT OF EDEN HAS *NOT* AGED WELL> Go back and listen.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've listened to it plenty, Roger, don't worry. Or is this just your way of getting back at me for revealing the obvious truth that Michael Jackson's music has aged more like milk than like wine?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

So now Michael Jackson is cheese?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that I care to get into it with you over Michael Jackson, but Off The Wall, production and song wise, still sounds good. I'm not going to argue against Talk Talk either, I love that record as much as anybody - but it sounds DATED now. Like Portishead's records. UNlike Can, Faust and Neu!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

but Off The Wall, production and song wise, still sounds good

I didn't say it sounds bad, just that it sounds dated. That I think it sounds bad is more a matter of opinion,....and one I'll happily defend, but that wasn't the point.

I'm not quite sure how you could charge Spirit of Eden with sounding dated, though, as both the production and the instrumentation employed therein are pretty timeless.....unlike the synthetic textures and sheen of MJ's more celebrated albums.

Portishead do sound dated, yes. I love the Dummy album still, but yes....it's definetely a product of its age.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)
