burnt and then bought

that's the major defense of filesharing/burning.

who does it, and what've you then bought?

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't done it yet but I am GOING TO DO IT w/ Timberlake & Luomo.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i did it with Luomo..but i don't think the 4 good things on Timberlake justify it.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I hear you gaz, I basically want the Justin for the good trax. But hell, I been listning to the mp3's for a while now so I figure if I find the cd in a 2nd hand shop I shd buy it..

But yr premise is correct; file-sharing had definitely caused me to BUY things.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

in a second hand shop! does that count?

"Second hand shops are killing music..."

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:35 (twenty-three years ago)

well I think it counts. any way you slice it you are reducing the scarcity of the item in the world; me buying 2nd hand means someone else cannot - they may have to pay full price.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

recycling! :)

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It's positively ecological! As Xgau would say!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Most everything I've bought in the last year, I've heard first on mp3, either in whole or in part. No, strike that. Make that everything.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 2 March 2003 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Massive Attack - 100th Window
Probably their best album. At least their densest.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Sunday, 2 March 2003 10:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Had a couple of Erase Errata MP3s, which they let you DL as promo, then bought the album. It's great.

mei (mei), Sunday, 2 March 2003 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought at least 200 of my CDs after tape/cdr copying and trading.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 2 March 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I can count on one hand the number of albums I've bought since '99 that I haven't heard at least partially online first. I've only started downloading full albums in the last few months and often, because my connection is so slow, I end up buying them before I finish downloading. There are one or two albums I've downloaded and not liked enough to buy, and a few that have inspired so many of my friends to buy that I decided I'd made my contribution and never laid down the money for.

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 2 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I downloaded Television's The Blow Up and burnt it to two discs because I could never justify paying the really high price that the 2-CD set was going for. Literally a week later, ROIR released it on vinyl, which was at least $10 cheaper than the CD, so I bought it because the "price is too high" argument was no longer valid.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 2 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Most recently, St. Etienne's Finnestere, & Steve Earle's Jerusalem. I was like "well, OK. I like every song, so worthwhile to support artist".

matt riedl (veal), Sunday, 2 March 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you talking about an entire album? I've only downloaded one, and while I like it, I wouldn't spend money on it now after all the time I've invested. Downloading an album takes me like three hours.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 2 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

how many songs on an album do you have to like before you feel its worth buying that album, if that IS your main reason for buying it?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 2 March 2003 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I can barely even remember an album which I've bought without having heard at least a couple songs beforehand. About 90% of the time this means mp3s, with the other 10% accounting for radio or hearing something via a friend or in-store listens. I think the last album I bought blind was something by O.L.D. that a friend recommended. That was about a year ago and I didn't exactly love it, but hey, it was $2.

original bgm, Sunday, 2 March 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Pretty much everything I've bought in the past two years I first heard as an mp3, unless it was a no brainer like Kinski or Surface Of Eceon in which I knew I was going to like it ahead of time.

The only real change to my purchasing habits is that I haven't bought anything that I disliked or wanted to sell back.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Sunday, 2 March 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

once upon a time, the biggest slice in my budget pie was devoted to purchasing music. that was several years ago. now, i am but one of many on riaa's most wanted list. i no longer pay for music; i pay for a high-speed internet conection. do i suffer guilt? well, a little. i mean, i realize that i am 'stealing' the musicians' music. so how do i validate my behaviour? i spend my hard earned cash on a ticket to the musicians' show. and, in my defense, i attend many more shows than ever before because 'free' on-line music has enabled me to explore much more music and many more artists. the slightest praise in print or spoken word is all i need to motivate an investigation of that artist/song. however, i do have one dilema: multiple shows of interest booked at same time for different venues. for example, does one attend ladytron & simian at chop suey (i've seen neither previously)? or, do i see quasi & calexico at the showbox (i've seen both bands before)? perhaps the ilx community can help - does that question merit a thread?

j.a.e., Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I did end up buying the Timberlake disc, but not the Luomo.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

how about if you spend ALL your disposable income on music and download the ones you can't then afford?

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 11 March 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubber so OTM. I have always wondered about that... would the RIAA still sue me for illegal downloading if they saw my depressingly huge music collection? "Honest, your honor, I would have spent money and bought the CDs, I just didn't have any!"

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i do that too

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If I like an album that I've downloaded, I buy it. Period. And 95% of the albums I've bought in the past two years are albums I've downloaded beforehand.

If I happen to burn a copy before I buy a real copy, I give the burned disc to my broke-ass brother.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 12 March 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

*whistles idly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

If I download an album and think it's worth buying I do.
Otherwise I delete the files. If it isn't worth buying it isn't worth listening to.

mkr, Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i only burn out-of-print cds or deleted dance vinyl. so i've never bought any of it.

but i suppose you could argue that this behavior seriously weakens the prospects of the reissue market.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

in fact i've been pretty lazy about picking up those arthur russell cds (i promise!! as soon as it gets here!!)

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I give up. Someone please explain OTM to me.
I am noob.
Thank you.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

OTM = on the mark

strange that vahid should mention arthur russell - the thought that had just run through my head as I hit this thread was "hey, I have to remember to pick up those arthur russell discs that seem pretty great from the downloads".

I buy as much as I possibly can of what I download and like.

southern lights (southern lights), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

not On The Money ?

Paul (scifisoul), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

What OTM stands for

Nick Mirov (nick), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i generally only fileshare the stuff i can not for the life of me find, like Immer or the first button down mind dan bell mix.

I have been bad a couple of times though and not purchased.
