Does anyone have a decent suggestion for the first song at my wedding? We can't think of a thing. We're looking for something indie or from the sixties...

I suppose Tammy Wynette doing DIVORCE would be inappropriate?

More seriously, possibly:
Not Too Young to Get Married - Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans
Meet Me In Church or This Little Ring - Solomon Burke
Married Two Kids - Fall (there aren't many good indie ones, I don't think)
Greek Wedding Song - Inspiral Carpets (see!)
Wedding Bells - George Jones
Third Finger, Left Hand - Vandellas
What Love Has Joined Together - Smokey or the Temptations

Do you mean first song at the reception?

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 2 March 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If you’re not the one then why does my soul feel glad today?
If you’re not the one then why does my hand fit yours this way?
If you are not mine then why does your heart return my call
If you are not mine would I have the strength to stand at all

I never know what the future brings
But I know you are here with me now
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with

I don’t want to run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am?
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

If I don’t need you then why am I crying on my bed?
If I don’t need you then why does your name resound in my head?
If you’re not for me then why does this distance maim my life?
If you’re not for me then why do I dream of you as my wife?

I don’t know why you’re so far away
But I know that this much is true
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with
And I wish that you could be the one I die with
And I pray in you’re the one I build my home with
I hope I love you all my life

I don’t want to run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

‘Cause I miss you, body and soul so strong that it takes my breath away
And I breathe you into my heart and pray for the strength to stand today
‘Cause I love you, whether it’s wrong or right
And though I can’t be with you tonight
And know my heart is by your side

I don’t want to run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I

We used Sarah Harmer's 'Open Window' as our first song (sigh...)' The Sundays' 'Monochrome' as song 2, and the Stones' 'Angie' number 3 (my wife's name is Angie!). All three seemed a little long at the time, especially because I'm not a good dancer.

If I ever get married, I'm going to insist on a song really obstentiously obvious and lame, like "Breathe" or "You're Still The One", because that would be much funnier and take the pressure off of having everyone STARE AT YOU ENDLESSLY WHILE YOU SLOW DANCE. I mean, that's a horrible tradition.

Our first song was Césaria Évora take on "Besame Mucho" (from the "Great Expectations [1998] soundtrack). I guess it depends on what mood you're looking to set -- "Besame Mucho" is a slow(er) song.

Me and my slightly former significant other were set on "Positively 4th Street" just because it's the antithesis of what is usually played--it'd at least make people laugh. Well, at least it would make the two of us laugh.

cybele (cybele), Monday, 18 August 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

the muppet show theme.... it's just delightful if you ask me.

of course... it might set the mood to "wacky"... which, hey, if there's a moment that deserves some wacky, it's the moment two folks agree to spend the rest of their lives together... me and my wife ran out to the "ode to joy" theme from raising arizona... if you can imagine a string quartet playing that... with a violin doing the yodeling...

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 18 August 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
Ok, I need some help:

First, my fiance and her father are both REALLY non-traditional, so they don't want to do the whole "first dance" and father-with-daughter thing.

That aside, I'm kind of just planning music I would enjoy dancing to, but I'm worried it's not "weddingy" enough and also that the old folks won't enjoy my rare funk and soul cut mix and that I should just throw in more hits/standards.

Anyone have any experience with this? Should I just go with my taste or am I going to regret not doing the crowd-pleasing thing?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 17 August 2006 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

pick crowd-pleasing songs that you like, with just a couple rare trax that mean something to you.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 17 August 2006 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

Hurting, how do you plan to play the music? CD's or a playlist off a laptop or actualy hands on DJing?

i played the wedding of a good friend of mine this monday past and it went down really well i'm glad to say.

it would definately mean alot to hear your favourite soul & funk tracks on yor wedding day so play a few of those but, believe me, what is going to mean even more is to see alot of people having a good time and dancing their asses off. you can NEVER play tunes that are too "weddingy" - once everyone gets suitably pissed you just pull out the songs everyone knows. please the crown unashamedly and make sure you cater to all ages. i can assure you that you won't regret it.

good luck for the big day!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 17 August 2006 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

big hitters at the wedding i just played:

the first dance was "come rain or come shine" by billy holiday, i followed that with the crusaders "street life", it has that smoochy bit at the beginning that goes full on disco (that was everyone elses queue to hit the floorm and they did!)

sister sledge "thinking of you"
the o'jays "love train"
ray charles "hit the road, jack" (recommended upthread, i think)
glenn miller "in the mood" & some other big bad choices
indeep "last night a dj saved my life"
blondie "atomic"
shirly & co "shame shame shame"
"gimme gimme gimme" followed by "hung up" (heh)
"funkytown"
"be my baby"
andrea true - "more more more"
queen "don't stop me now"
shirley ellis "the clapping song"
dinosaur L "kiss me again"
the celestial choir "stand on the word"
nina simone "feeling good"
david rose "the stripper"

& on....

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

oh yeah,

neil diamond "sweet caroline & elvis "hound dog"

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

"once everyone gets suitably pissed"

when i say pissed i mean drunk, of course!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'm DJing at my friends' wedding this saturday (as well as being the best man!)and they've asked me to start with Patsy Cline's "Crazy".
Out of Jed's list I was planning on playing "Last night a DJ saved my life", "Hung Up" and "More More More". I was considering "Be My Baby" too, did the crowd dance?

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

alot of dancing even to the slow numbers.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

It's kinda coming together. I'm not going too rare, but not the most predictable hits either - I'm including two versions of "Tighten Up" which is always a crowd pleaser even for people who don't know it - "Soul Man," (for the old folks) "It's Your Thing" "Che Che Cole" by Antibalas (the Makossa mix), "Machine Gun" by the Commodores, "Popcorn" by Hot Butter "What Do I Have to Do to Prove My Love to You" by Marva Whitney etc. I think I need more mid-tempo stuff though.

Then on the slow dance songs I'm going with mostly favorites but sticking mainly to soul - "When a Man Loves a Woman," "These Arms of Mine" "La La Means I Love You" etc.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 18 August 2006 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, this is what I'm looking at right now (keeping in mind the dance window is pretty short and we might not even get this far):

Don Covay - Mercy Mercy
Beatles - Happy Just to Dance With You
Rolling Stones - Let's Spend the Night Together
Eddie Bo - Hook and Sling
Antibalas - Che Che Cole
(unknown latin band) - Tighten Up
The Bamboos - Tighten Up
Co-Real Artists - What About You In The World Today
Marva Whitney - What Do I Have to Do
Hot Butter - Popcorn
Sea and Cake - Hotel Tell
Commodores - Machine Gun
Rob Base - It Takes Two
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough
Prince - Kiss
Village People - YMCA
Aretha Franklin - Respect
Isley Brothers - It's Your Thing
etc.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 18 August 2006 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

I have at least one close family friend who I know is going to give me a hard time if I don't play any Sinatra or What a Wonderful World or Tony Bennett or whatever, but I'm trying to block him out.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 18 August 2006 04:45 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, question:

iPod can't crossfade playback (I've just realized). Is the dead space a terrible terrible thing? Should I just bring my laptop even though it's kind of a pain?

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 18 August 2006 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

no. yes.

redundancy: what if your ipod dies?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 August 2006 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

I'm having the same problem as you. Since most people at the wedding are my friends, I want to have fun with them and don't want to spend the whole night behind the decks. So I preplanned a playlist on my ipod for 10 hours (we'll be dancing at least for 6)! The dead space might be annoying at first, but it's no worse than when you put on a cd at a house party. Anyway once everybody is drunk, they won't notice anymore...

Revive!

I need a recommendation for a slow dance song for my friend's wedding as he dances with his mom. It has to be a slow song ballad, it has to have no lovey-dovey/sexy lyrics (this is a dance between a mother and her son, after all, and lyrics like "My love must be a kind of blind love / I can't see anyone but you" or "Don't you look wonderful tonight?" seem kind of out of place.) and it has to be sung by a man. The mom hates female singers, the sexist bitch. HELP!!

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

The only thing I can think of is "Gloomy Sunday," which has its own set of issues.

My wedding's coming up this summer so I've been toying with playlists and song ideas lately. Gonna DJ the whole thing ourselves in iTunes party/shuffle mode, most likely. Sticking to fun songs, upbeat, stuff people know, lots of '80s new wave alongside current stuff. Would it be crazy to dim the lights and display a photo montage set to Taylor Swift's "Hey Stephen" (note: my name is Stephen) as part of the wedding ceremony itself, Y/N?

My initial post was for Mr Snrub, btw!

No, YOU'RE a disgusting savage (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

Mr. Snrub, the first thing that came to my mind is "Mona Lisa" by Nat King Cole. It's a beautiful song sung by a great singer, and the lyrics are neither romantic (as they're about Mona Lisa the painting) nor depressive.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

Another non-romantic, non-depressive song that comes to mind is "It Was a Very Good Year" by Frank Sinatra, but I'm not sure how easy that one is to dance to. And speaking of Sinatra, there's of course "My Way"...

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

"I did her my waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay"
