Reynols: What the fuck?

I picked up Reynols/No Reynols the other day for $0.99. I haven't listened to all of it yet, but what the hell is the deal with these guys? is "No Reynols" really a different band with a different drummer? Is it a pseudonym? Oh, it's confusing.

Ian Johnson, Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

They're from Argentina and the drummer/singer has Down's syndrome, that's all I know. What do they sound like?

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

What I've heard is just odd noisy drones. But my head couldn't handle it after that, so I haven't played the rest.

Ian Johnson, Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

they're playing in london soon. hopefully I'll be able to go.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 2 March 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

we were supposeta play w. them in NYC a couple years ago but they never showed up, they were stranded somewhere. so i've still never heard em. would really like to tho. here is stuff about them

duane, Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The tape/CD that my friend put out with them and Pauline Oliveros is awesome.

hstencil, Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course the fact that i know this was bcz of a tip from duane.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

but i've still never even heard em

duane, Monday, 3 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ian
that was released by my enemy. avoid anything on his label at all costs.

thanks.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

they played nashvegas a few times when i was there... they were pals with the nfc's... toured with them, etc. their psychedelic lemonade's a little sour, but it's so completely home made. i hear they're quite nice.

gygax! ... are you declaring msg as your archenemy?

msp, Monday, 3 March 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

also... word to the wise... their "Blank Tapes" release i think is quite literally a blank tape.

at least that's what i was told by a certain wisemonkee from portland
m.

msp, Monday, 3 March 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

"blank tapes" is processed and layered hiss from blank tapes - it's a cd on trente oiseaux and it's more in a straight up "noise" vein than most reynols releases. the pauline oliveiros thing (orig. on white tapes, then creamgarden) is amazing drone stuff - i kind of think courtis might've done most of it as it resembles his solo stuff ("eating an estufa" and "albumina blues" both on freedom from)...

reynols proper are based around miguel tomasin, roberto conlazo and anla courtis and most of their musical releases have a kind of shamanistic noise-psychedelic quality to them; no reynols drops tomasin in favor of another drummer with down syndrome.

there's also a reynols/no reynols live split on last visible dog that sees reynols almost writing songs and no reynols doing these massive, lengthy excursions into primitivist psychedelia that almost resemble the most blitzed of japanese stuff (toho sara, fushitsusha at their mellowest, ohkami no jikan, etc).

I LIKE REYNOLS. and freedom from.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

reynols releases on the semi-roar label is quality drone/noise. its a small one-man label out of japan, and i am plugging semi-roar because some of my music will be put out in late 2003.

kephm, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

YNF: What's teh deal with Last Visible Dog? The only release I have on it is Olneyville Sound System, Efforst In Freedumb split label with Hospital Productions. I had kind of assumed they were a local label, since I'd never heard of them before.

Ian Johnson, Monday, 3 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's this one guy -- I met him at Terrastock V, and he's friendly enough, has all sorts of strange and cool things on his label.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, last visible dog used to be in nebraska, now they're in providence i think. i met him at T5, too, and he and his label are definitely cool - they've been putting out overlooked genius from new zealand, japan and the US for a few years now and not getting their props. every home should have MCMS 3, the Celebrate Psi Phenomenon retrospective, birchville cat motel's _vespertine_, dead raven choir, etc, etc. and i'm excited about the iditarod/olive tree 12" and miminokoto releases coming up.

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to the reynols gig yesterday and they didn't show (UK immigration: dud).

full story [sent out via yahoo group wire-announcements, tuesday 11th march]

..........................

Hi Everybody:

we are very sorry about the yesterday events, actually was the worst
day of the whole tour. a real nightmare.

UK Inmigration authorities didnt allow us to enter the United Kingdom.
After more than 5 hours of friendly Gestapo style checking every
milimiter of our bagages and bodies, and staying in a room with a
security door (a jail actually) full of people from countries like
Poland, Afganistan, East Europe they rejected us.

their "legal" reasons were that we are not allowed to "take
employment" in the united kingdom without a special permit, but this
was probably only a non-very-imaginative-legal-pretext to avoid our
presence there only for our physical aspect, our argentinian
passports our strange shaped guitars or any other possible reason
related to the political moment the UK is living.

We have been playing for more than a whole month in Norway, Sweden,
Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and France without any problem;
we were only trying to play some few days in UK and the only payment
was in order to cover the costs of the trip, which can hardly been
conceived as "take employment" on the UK. We even showed them our
back flight to Buenos Aires on march 15th but they rejected us anyway.

They sent it to the french side virtually in the middle of nothing,
no bus, no train, anything available, hopefully we found a taxi and
we could afford a (terrible expensive for our argentinian eceonomy)
trip back to Paris where Frank de Quengo hopefully gave us asylum.

We are very sorry to cancell all the dates in the UK but our physical
bodies are not allowed to go there, however we will be playing all
that dates with our spirits and we are also planing to do some
conceptual projects related to this sad cultural event.

sorry again

all the best

Reynols

PS. we are in France now, in Paris and we are deciding what to do in
the next days, our only option might be to take the plane back to
Argentina from Oslo which obviously will cost a lot to our
argentinian devaluated pockets...

damn that yahoo group wire-announcement, tuesday 11th march. obviously did have no notion the guys had gotten dicked around by our lovely government bootboys. good to see julio there - hi julio! man the second band on after that appalling "not the birthday party" was even worse ! "antagonistic" gtr / drums improv of the worst calibre. i'm quite sure they were having a fun time but oh no, nobody else was. the plastic containers that many of you may have received free samples of wrigleys "extra" mouth mints in. peel the labels off and they make excellent space cars for playing "space cars" with. or you can keep sand in it like your own personal beach

bob snoom, Sunday, 16 March 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

god that's terrible Bob. but it was nice meeting you so it wasn't a complete loss.

I got home and got my kicks out of listening to Kevin druum.

ten months pass...
from a mailing list:

Subject: REYNOLS 1993-2004

Hi, everybody

Hope all is fine there. We would like to let you know that Reynols'
life-cycle has come to its natural end.

Anyway, there are still some forthcoming records under that name,
with stuff
we recorded in 2003 and before. And we have around 100 or 200 hours
of
recorded stuff that will appear sooner or later: enough for anybody
not to
miss the band too much in the coming years.

This is not a traumatic decision, we are all still friends and we
feel that
to end a project in the right moment is the best way to keep its
spirit
alive... We will go on playing with Miguel Tomasin on the Sol Mayor
Project,
playing classic rock covers only in benefit gigs for schools and
disability
institutions. And we will probably develop some other different
projects in
the future.

We want to thank all the people that supported us over the past
years:
labels, magazines, bands, journalists, musicians, venues, festivals,
radios,
TV shows, web-sites, foundations, universities, sound technicians,
producers, photographers, record shops, distributors, audiences, and
friends
in general. We also want to thank our detractors because they were
also part
of this meaningful learning experience.

And mind we are talking about Reynols' terrestrial death: the band
will
always be alive in Minecxio. So head that way whenever you feel like
paying
them a visit.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 January 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

A pity indeed. I only heard a mere sliver of what they did but it was always good stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 January 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

saddened me too -- i started listening to them too late to ever have a chance to see them perform late. some superlative material.

I know it's over, but was everyone cool w/ the "avant-garde band fronted by a man with Down's Syndrome" thing? Did that raise any eyebrows? Was there some exploitation happening? What they were doing made a lot of sense to me in interviews, but I still feel a bit conflicted. If John D. is out there I'd be particularly interested in his take, since he works in the field [actually both fields, music and mental health] and is smart and stuff.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 25 April 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

good lord. sure, there was exploitation happening, records were being sold. it was all a sick joke. people with down syndrome shouldn't ever be allowed to create anything, and if they do it should strictly be fucking yarn art and we can look at them and smile, and pat them on their head and say, "oh, that's WONDERFUL!"

i guess we better head over to the gyatees thread and start worrying about the exploitation of those monks, too, eh?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it really that simple?

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing that ever made me uncomfortable about reynols is the dumbf**cks who were into them purely because of the down syndrome component (see some of the Scratch Records descriptions, for instance). that said, i think reynols were a interesting, great band exploring some fascinating ideas and producing some riveting sounds.

jack cole (jackcole), Sunday, 25 April 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I am periodically offended by Scratch's newsletter, and not just their descriptions of Reynols either.

listening to the Reynols/No Reynols cd now. it's too bad they called it quits. i feel lucky to have seem them live a couple years ago.

contribute, Friday, 24 December 2004 07:28 (twenty years ago)

I only have their "Pacallirte" album, and I quite like it. My knowledge of Argentinian bands is limited to Reynols and Los Natas but, god, I would like to have bands like this in Italy...

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 24 December 2004 11:26 (twenty years ago)

good timing bcz i d/l all the reynols mp3s from UBU web a few days ago and wz listening to them just now:

http://www.ubu.com/sound/reynols.html

on a cpl of them (check 'grodos') he 'invents' a language and uses as a vocal, it sounds 'retarded'. I guess if I didn't know he had down's syndrome it could be offensive to some but to me it has an emotion to it that some of the concrete stuff like 'fire music' couldn't have. reynols or wild man fischer offer a view of their world through their records (I think that's esp true with wild man fischer) and bcz we can't possibly relate we might find it uncomfortable. A lot of concrete poetry looks at the issue of how to communicate when you proper language fails (henri chopin had his ideas abt concrete poetry from his experience as a WWII prisoner, sharing a room with ppl from other countries) and its not a million miles from reynols.

(I might do a thread on LPTJ to get john D to comment maybe)

reviving because pauline oliveros in the arms of reynols is still fucking killer. i always thought it was mostly done by courtis, cause it sounds like his solo stuff from the time. someone seriously needs to put albumina blues on 180gm LP.

One of the reasons I like Reynols very much:

INTRODUCTION TO TOMASIN'S (NON)PHILOSOPHY

Dialogues with MIGUEL TOMASIN (Reynols percussionist, vocalist, guru).

Trancription & Translation by Anla Courtis.

The following dialogues were transcripted from diary conversations with Miguel Tomasin (the drummer and leader of argentinean band Reynols, who is has by Down's Syndrome). As Tomasin is not interested at all in writing anything, these dialogues are probably the only access to Tomasin's philosopy or non-philosophy. (contact: reyn✧✧✧@htom✧✧✧.c✧✧)

* * *

Question: Do you think the universe exists?
Miguel Tomasin: No, it doesn't exist. It's just fantasy.

* * *

Q: What's the most important thing in your life?
MT: Photocopies.

* * *

MT: The score (of the match) was 1 to 1.

MT: To step on ants.

* * *

MT: A girl is frying eggs on her belly.
Q: Doesn't she get burnt?
MT: No.

* * *

* * *

Q: Explain your idea about the "Planeta Sardina" (Sardina Planet).
MT: Oh, easy... When you eat a lot of fish a planet starts to grow inside your paunch. That's the Sardina Planet.

* * *

Q: Do aliens exist?
MT: No.
Q: But haven't you seen them?
MT: Yes I saw them, but they don't exist.

* * *

MT: Do you know why the grass is short?
A: No.
MT: Because it was long.

* * *

Q: What do you think: Did Hitler commit suicide or was he killed?
MT: Eh...I don't know. He didn't tell me nothing.

* * *

Q: How many heavens are in heaven?
MT: Noone.

* * *

* * *

MT: The sun is blocked by the clouds and the sun.

* * *

Q: Do you have blood?
MT: No.
Q: So what's there inside you?
MT: Nothing.

* * *

Q: What does God wear?
MT: God wears shorts and blue nappies.

* * *

Tomasin's definition of noise-music: 'It's music for teeth'.

* * *

* * *

Q: What were you like before you were born?
MT: Bigger.

* * *

MT: Guitars inside my socks.

* * *

Q: Are you the Buddha?

MT: Yes and my grandsons and great-grandsons.

* * *

Q: What do you recommend for this week?
MT: You have to eat, stand up, do what you have to do and then ... to sleep.
Q: But what do you do when you get tired of this?
MT: Ah.... I WAKE UP.

* * *

MT: Wind that blows birds.

* * *

Q: Where is the mind?
Answer: (Miguel Tomasin comes and blows on my ear).

* * *

Q: What's this? (a pop can)
MT: A head of seven heads.

* * *

Q: When is your birthday?
MT: Every week.

* * *

* * *

Q: What is the Down's Syndrome?

MT: Yes.
Q: So can you tell us what the rest of the people is?
MT: Handkerchiefs.

Tomasin's statement on a rainy day:
'Jesus is sunbathing upstairs on the terrace'.
