Live/Die: Mike Love

Here's my attempt at making a new sort of "vs." category at ILM. Live/Die is pretty self-explanatory I think. You state a few reasons why "X-celebrity" should be left alive, or what you think he's done to deserve death.

Your first mission: Save Mike Love's life, because no one else is going to do it for you.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 2 March 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose this could later be expanded to include reasons why "x-band" should stay together or break up.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

As much as I hate Mike Love, this is a pretty mean-spirited thing, dont'chathink paul?

hstencil, Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Figurative, h. Figurative!

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus killing Mike Love would've been more effective in like '68 or something.

hstencil, Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No argument there.

Where's My Cheeseburger???

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Death is too good for Mike Love. He needs to be kept alive, but severely shamed on a daily basis.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Love merely needs to be IGNORED. FORGOTTEN.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Who needs shaming when he looks/acts like this now:

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

he can live, but only because i like the stupid pun "mike love not war"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

He should live on, but only as Pig Champion's chamber pot.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The only real plusses he brought to the Beach Boys were: his voice (though of course surely there could have been a replacement of similar range) and one or two songs - 'Big Sur' & 'Sumahama' I am fond of... there's really not too much else there though...
His behaviour during 'Pet Sounds' and 'Smile'-type time was reprehensible; was the man a complete philistine? I think yes must be the answer to that.
To hear the ML ideal of how the BBs should be, listen to any post-1985 album, or '15 Big Ones'... and cringe...

Tom May (Tom May), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Bagge to thread!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

why exactly does mike love deserve death?

even by the petty-minded standards of ilm, this "category" is pretty low. no one deserves death, and if you think they do, then frankly you need to seek professional help.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 3 March 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's now obvious that no one is getting the point of this exercise.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 3 March 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cutting his tonsils would be enough. You wouldn't need to kill him.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

On the subject of "killfiles"...

ahem, Monday, 3 March 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

He made an important contribution to 'Good Vibrations' - the "She's picking up good vibrations, she's giving me excitations" bit. And obviously sang lead on some classic pop records.

The man's clearly a tosser, but has earned his stay of execution.

I initially read Geir's comments as "Cutting his toenails would be enough." He's an arsehole - give him a pedicure! That'll teach him.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

He sang lead, yes, but if it was up to Mike Love, then Beach Boys would never have moved beyond the surf style of "I Get Around" and similar songs. It was Brian Wilson that helped them evolved into the classic pop of "Pet Sounds" and their underrated early 70s albums.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Fair enough Geir, but I was talking about sparing his life, not whether he was better than Brian Wilson.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

James, you would be well advised to do as the rest of us are doing, and ignore this troll completely.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 3 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate mike love as much as the next guy but for some reason the phrase...

KILL LOVE

...just looks both existentially wrong/unbearably pretentious. Like the title of some Sonic Youth wannabe band album in the cut-out bins of a used rekkid store.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no such qualms. I say Kill!

Carey (Carey), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Blaming it all on Mike doesn't make sense: the only Beach Boy not totally on board with all their terrible records from the 80s and onwards was Brian, so if you kill Mike, that still leaves Al and Bruce (and yes, Carl was cooperating at the time too). Mike went along with Love You; Mike sang all his parts OK on Smile and Pet Sounds, even if he protested the lyrics; Mike and Al's "Don't Go Near the Water" on Surf's Up is greatness, and his stuff on Holland is decent. I'll go along with not allowing him to write any more music, but it was partially because of Mike's stage-ham antics that Brian was able to stay home and make a bunch of classic records.

Verdict: 20 years entertaining the inmates of San Quentin, but no death penalty

dleone (dleone), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to hear Brian Wilson's rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues"
< FALSETTO >"I Shot a Man in Reno / just to watch him die..."< FALSETTO >

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to hear Brian Wilson's rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues"

A surf version of "Jailhouse Rock" could be interesting though. And then if he survives those 20 years there is also the opportunity of looking forward to his version of "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree" upon release from prison...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Mike Love vs Courtney Love.
Had to be said.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

now THAT's a tuff one, m'Lord

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's a question: Has there ever been a really good band with a less appealing front man than the Beach Boys? I can't think of one.

Burr, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tempted to say Van Halen, but I've outgrown my hatred and it would petty to be bring it up.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Mike Love, he's a good singer.
