ladytron & simian @ chop suey, 10$US(i've seen neither band before)
or, calexico & quasi @ the showbox 12$US(i've seen both bands before)

i am on the fence, but i am leaning. present you case and push me either way. note: advice for both acts rejected on the financial grounds.

personally I'd go for Calexico and Quasi. My sister just saw Simian and Ladytron in Boston and said Simian was hysterically bad, and Ladytron just stands there and look mad (though she still liked them). But I've never seen any of these bands. In your situation, unless you're DYING to see bands you've already seen, my interest in novelty might lead me to L&S.

i don't see the point of Ladytron live and Simian suck, so go Calexico & Quaseee

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Before clicking on this thread I was about to make a smart-acre crack about ditching both and going to see Sleater Kinney, but lo! Quasi! So yeah, the SK connection.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, another Seattle ILXOR... welcome! :)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

More Seattle madness!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Simian were pretty brutal and I liked the record. Ladytron were OK for like 20 minutes, then I got bored. I don't think they even played 40 minutes, in fact (I could be wrong).

Might as well hijack the thread: on the same night, there's Ted Leo and the Pharmacists in one corner, Sahara Hotnights + Ikara Colt in the other.

Hotnights Hotnights Hotnights

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:05 (twenty-three years ago)

but calexico are likely ugly and not pleasing to look at and i know quasi are rather hideous whereas ladytron might look nice in their matching outfits. don't know anything about simian. if you were juding musically i'd go with ladytron too, quasi is dull and calexico is nice music to sand floors to but not much else. you might dance to ladytron.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Another thumbs up for Calexico (who I've preferred live anyway and that new album is terrific) and Quasi.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Calexico are grebt. Quasi are grebt. Ladytron are grebt. Simian I haven't heard much of but they might be grebt. The problem with seeing Quasi live is that they basically play the same song over and over and that gets irritating real quick. Plus you have to deal with the 20-minute drum solo.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Simian are not grebt, trust me

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I got a promo copy of that Simian album and I can't get past the first song. It makes my head hurt, and I don't like that.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:37 (twenty-three years ago)

*cocks head to one side, stares upward toward nothing specific and scratches head in careful consideration of valued ilx commentaries. then thinks: 'will it be raining as i shuffle down to the showbox?'

j.a.e., Monday, 3 March 2003 06:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i've seen quasi, and they're very good live, lots of good songs, too. i've heard the calexico album once and it seems ok.

i don't like simian much, so go with the showbox gig.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 3 March 2003 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate nights like this. the last face off for me was "will oldham vs moistboiz"

kephm, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

so, kephm, who won? if i were betting, i'd be puttin' my money down for prince billy.

j.a.e., Monday, 3 March 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon people, I need your help in solving this complex mathematical equation:

Ted Leo & the Pharmacist # Sahara Hotnights + Ikara Colt

where # can be >, < or ==.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

kweli + common vs. delgados!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, this makes me so happy to live in a town where nothing ever happens!
:(

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i think Simian are ok, really like 'La Breeze'

Ladytron - i've not heard one good review of them live so far, whats up with that?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Go see the Blood Brothers at Graceland instead. That's where (I think) I'm going tonight.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

it happened again. i was the the last to know. add one more variable to the equation: calexico & quasi & nicolai dunger vs. ladytron & simian vs. sondre lerche & nada surf. sondre lerche - such a promising young song writer with a very clean vox. and, i must admit, 'blonde on blonde' by nada surf gets me. oh well, i saw calexico & quasi and i don't regret it.

j.a.e., Friday, 7 March 2003 08:10 (twenty-three years ago)

see calexico. and i really, really do not like sahara hotnights. i can't put my finger on why, but i find them very objectionable.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 7 March 2003 08:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Quasi is really good, don't know Calexico very well, but read good things about them. I should really pick them.

zilverberg.tk (zilverberg.tk), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Simian are SHITE. Ladytron are RUBBISH live. Quasi are ACENESS INCARNATE live, and erm... I've never seen Calexico but my mate swears by them. So I think yer decision is made for you.

kate (suzy), Friday, 7 March 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

ladytron r really good live but rubbish on disc so i suggest u see them. think about it: bunch of guys with beards playing 'real' instruments and evoking dusty evenings in a moon drenched barn (read: boredom) vs sexy sassy zesty-zest robot punx in silver jackets. hmmm..

schnell schnell, Friday, 7 March 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
OK, so I went with Sahara Hotnights because I got in free. They were fun and energetic, if not a bit paint-by-the-numbers. Ikara Colt were disappointing though. I kinda liked their record, but they tried to ham it up live and be all "rock n'roll baaaaaaaaaaby" and it sucked ass.
