Rehashing The Beatles vs. rehashing The Stooges?

Easy! The Beatles were truly great while The Stooges were shite. Thus, bands that rehash The Beatles (lots of classy Britpop, powerpop etc.) are automatically SOOOO much better than those "new rock" bands (Strokes, White Stripes, Hives etc.) that rehash The Stooges instead.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

you are very astute. ilm clearly has nothing to teach you. i suggest no one try.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, the White Stripes are all about the Zep, not the Stooges. Fool.

dude, the Strokes are all about Iggy Pop solo (and New Order), not the Stooges. Fool.

dude, the Hives are all about the, not the Stooges. Fool.

dude, britpop has nothing to do with the Beatles. Fool.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

damn straight

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

dumb typo. the Hives are all about the Nuggets bands (and the Voidoids, if xgau's right), not the Stooges.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:55 (twenty-three years ago)

fool.

gimme them balls foo'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess's wise words are not being understood by The Younger Generation. Anthony is about to meet his own Kobiyashi Maru test.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Stooges and the Nuggets band (and even MC5 for that matter) are all the same anyway.

The only one of those "new rock" bands that stick out being obviously better than the rest is Vines. And they do so in a positive way, while having melodic harmonic qualities to their music that are remiscent of Supergrass.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 3 March 2003 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 March 2003 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 3 March 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

g.cannon (gcannon), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, the Strokes are all about Iggy Pop solo (and New Order)
hmm i don't see where the New Order stands when it comes to The Strokes, i thought they're all about The VU and The Fall??(as julian said)

rex jr., Monday, 3 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

HONOUR THE GEIR!!

duane, Monday, 3 March 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

The Fall???

Keith McD (Keith McD), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yup.

rex jr., Monday, 3 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

The Fall - please explain.

and Geir, do you think the Beatles would have been better off without Ringo and his drumkit and their blues/r&b/r'n'r influences?

Keith McD (Keith McD), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beatles' R&B influences, with the exception of a few songs ("Helter Skelter", "Come Together", "Yer Blues", "I'm Down", to name but a few), didn't do anything to reduce the melodic and harmonic qualities of their music. So, no, their R&B influences usually didn't harm their music.

They sure could have been better off without Ringo the song composer and C&W fan though. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the 'I Am Sam' soundtrack = proof that the Beatles would have sucked without rhythm

Keith McD (Keith McD), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

you don't think C&W has good melodies?

Keith McD (Keith McD), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

"Yesterday" - proof that The Beatles needn't neccessarily have sucked without rhythm.

But rhythm usually didn't harm their music anyway, so...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

C&W may have good melodies, but a lot of the C&W tradition has been a little to harmonically limited.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Easy! The Beatles were truly great while The Stooges were shite.

You should be thwacked about the head severely and repeatedly with a frozen sea-bass for statements of this kind.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

repeatedly but arrhymthically (otherwise it will not take)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

thought i was alone in preffering The Stooges to The Beatles hehe.

rex jr., Monday, 3 March 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, Alex, as much as i don't want to cramp your mad-Stooges-love-stylee, the sanest course of action is to recognize Geir's particular brand of small-mindedness, acknowledge it perhaps, and then move on in acceptance of the fact that no matter your passion, you will not chnage his mind. Geir is like a vast, mighty asteroid floating through the cosmos and we are but puny missiles flung from a desperate earth in an effort to stop it or stay its course. Once in awhile it's just gonna hit a planet and kill billions. Sometimes there's nothing to be done...

No, Rex Jr., you're not alone.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm never one to let ridiculous statements go by without some counter-commentary, even if it's simply tantamount to screaming at a vegetable.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Just so ya know, it is. Your devotion and passion are commendable, even if they're wasted on their intended target.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir is the No Face to the Chihiro that is ilm.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

the stooges and the beatles are not that different and most who people like some of one would likely like some of the other. this is kind of like arguing the relative merits of red and blue.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Strokes and New Order? "love vigilantes" vs. "barely legal" Though both are VU-school jangle freaks (though Tom Petty fits in the structure too).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Mitch's post is the funniest fucking thing I've seen all day. I hack up a lung in its honor.
