NEW RAMONES TRIBUTE

I got a taste of the new Ramones tribute CD at the Virgin Megastore (hey... I was forced at gunpoint to go in!) today. It has U2, Garbage, Rancid, Kiss and some other notables but to tell you the truth, it sounded quite lame. Anyone else give it a go yet?

Hasn't been rather well established by this point that by their very nature, tribute albums of this variety are *ALWAYS* lame?

Skimmed through it and was left thoroughly unimpressed. Got a soft spot for Pete Yorn though, so I liked his cover of "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend".

i have to disagree, the death to the pixies tribute album was pretty good. the get up kids alec eiffel was better then the origanel!

The Punk Tribute to The Clash was okay, if only because they didn't mess with the songs too much. That made it a bit boring, but that's a much better fate than what I've heard of this Ramones tribute.

Ya know, the bands on that tribute CD, to me, scream "bad idea". I wouldn't even have to listen to it to know it sucks. Isn't Metallica on there also? The only bands close stylistically to the Ramones would be Rancid and KISS and they take themselves too seriously to cover the Ramones.

I agree that the punk tribute to the Clash was okay. Other tribute albums that were okay to pretty good, IMHO, are: Rise and Fall/Iggy Pop; Means to an End/Joy Division; Enconium/Led Zeppelin; Livin' Lovin' Played/women performing Led Zeppelin; Another Prick in the Wall/Ministry; Various Artists doing Tapestry/the Carol King album.
It does, however, seems that it now becoming a redundancy to say that tribute albums are lame since the good ones are far outnumbered by ones that can only be described as "ARE THESE MOTHERFUCKERS HIGH OR WHAT?"

Jesus fucking Christ! I forgot to include my favorite tribute album of all time... Beat the Retreat, the songs of RIchard Thompson. REM's version of Wall of Death; Bob Mould's Turning of the Tide and Bonnie Raitt's The Spellis Broken are just a few of many. many great renditions of some fabulous songs.

the mike patton song is good on the black flag tribute

Scaredy Cat... I kinda got that feeling when I was reading the playlist and artists on the back... as I was clicking through the songs at the listening station (couldn't really stand more than a few seconds of most of the covers) I found that the Garbage song didn't sound too bad. The U2 cover is ridiculous. The others range from sad to pitiful though there are at least 1 or two notable exceptions.

Return of the Grevious Angel

The Gram Parsons Tribute, that's a good album.

Good tribute albums: the Great Jewish Music series on Tzadik (okay, I've only heard the Bacharach one, but how could the others go wrong?), and the Sun Ra tribute album on Rastascan.

THIS ONE IS ASS. I like how Rob Zombie took the time and effort to make Blitzkrieg Bop suck in a way never before imagined. Like the Afghan Whigs turning "Lost In The Supermarket" into a generic Afghan Whigs song, the best was probably RHCP turning "Havana Affair" into a generic RHCP song. There were some chappies produced by Keith Forsey that weren't bad either. EVERYTHING ELSE SUCKED.

I was quite taken by The Badlands tribute cd for Nebraska. Though weakest covers where the strongest Springsteen originals.

Is the Ramones trib. discussed at the top of the thread the same one with Per Gessle (of Roxette) doing "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend".

He released that as a single and I picked it up a few days ago. The a-side is nothing special, but the b-side (done just for the single) is a nice version of "Sheena is Punk Rocker" done in piano & fake strings style, with Mr. Gessle playing all of it himself.

Mean Guy, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 05:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers' take on "Havana Affair," and it's truly, truly, truly dire.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Biased I am, but Garbage's rendition of "I Just Wanna Have Something To Do" is excellent. I was about to say that with source material that good, it would have to be, but then I downloaded 30 seconds of the U2 cover and it made me want to kill EVERYONE.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

That U2 cover is, indeed, quite horrible. The Garbage piece is quite good which is saying a lot since I can't stand them.

The Peppers did a fair rendition of 1969 on the Iggy Pop covers album. The same cannot be said of their effort on the newest Ramones tribute.
