Righty, I'm gonna keep all you lovely postees posted on the radio station we have to suffer through at work every day (it's a pitiful local station that we have to listen due to some wankass sponsorship deal). Right now, they've just finished with The One and Only by Chesney Hawkes. YES!

Calum Robert, Monday, 3 March 2003 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

TEARS FOR FUCKING FEARS

Calum Robert, Monday, 3 March 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i like 'Breakout' - what was the TFF track? you're not doing too bad apart from Chesney...does this radio station play anything from the last ten years though?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 March 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

PAST HOUR:

Gabrielle,
'Together in Electric Dreams' (whoever sung it)
Ronan,
Gareth Gates,
Some crap boy bands,
M People...

Calum, Monday, 3 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a pitiful local station ...name & shame this station.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

SWING OUT SISTER ROXX... um, yeah. Anyway I liked them.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

'Together in Electric Dreams' (whoever sung it)

pah, you deserve to suffer (which you aren't. except maybe the gabrielle)

Alan (Alan), Monday, 3 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"...In Electric Dreams" is P.P.Arnold. I actually have the soundtrack on vinyl. People keep giving me copies of this record along with Glenn Campbell's greatest hits.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

M People RULE

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

RICK ASTLEY NOW.

Calum, Monday, 3 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

he's good too

mark s (mark s), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought "Electric Dreams" was a Moroder composition, from the movie of the same name. A little cult classic that hits many good notes, especially since it has the young Virginia Madsen in it! The soundtrack is really groovy too.

Davlo (Davlo), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

There are two songs on the album with that title. One by Moroder, one sung by P.P.Arnold. I was assuming he had just heard the song that was played at the end of the movie where everyone in San Franisco is jizzing themselves over hearing this song on the radio. At least that is what I imagine.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, wake me when they do a three song block of Tiffany.
This stuff isn't too horrible, really. They just need to play some Sade or late period Duran Duran and it'd be the perfect "New Wave Coughing Blood in the Late 80s Station..."

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh they play Tiffany (and Sonia and Shanice with 'I Love Your Smile') every single fucking day. Non stop usually. With an Erasure, Eurythimics and Phil Collins 'classic' every couple of hours at least. Bonnie Tyler and Meatloaf and Elton John (especially his shit-tacular hit with Kiki Dee) also get a look in every day as do Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson with 'I Knew him So Well'.

Name and shame them?

Shit why not take a look at them yourself... www.kingdomfm.co.uk

Have a look at their A-list and see what I mean or weep at such comments from the DJ's as:

Rebecca Banner:

"What about the woman herself? What makes her tick, you ask? Well I can tell you that she is a fan of Pink, Blue (although that has more to do with the aesthetic qualities of Duncan) and Nickleback. She was a fan of Boyzone (not sure why she says 'was') and she dismisses all 80s music with the one exception being Karma Chameleon."

Barry Sneddon:

"Barry first went to a concert to see Status Quo which in itself isn't too bad except that it was in 2001 and the support was the Beach Boys...... and he enjoyed it!"

If anyone wants to drop these 'DJ's' and email and point out that music has more to offer than the toss they play day in and day out I'll be more than thankful. I think they need to be told...

Calum Robert, Monday, 3 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I could do without Elton John or Boyzone, but the rest just sounds like the stuff I could tolerate but ignored anyways because I was too busy (back in 87-89) getting into Rap, Goth, Reggae, Celtic and Classic to get too worked up about it.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno - repetition sinks it pretty fast when it's the same songs every two hours and none of them are worth a toss. It would be almost refreshing to hear something like Smells Like Teen Spirit on the radio never mind Hard to Explain.

The only modern music they tend to have a hard on for is Coldplay anyway. ARGGHHHH!!!!!

Calum Robert, Monday, 3 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh what's the station again?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

repetition sinks it pretty fast when it's the same songs every two hours...
Welcome to modern top 40. Every station is actually a top 40 station, its just they are the top 40 songs of whatever genre/format.

...and none of them are worth a toss.
Well, go beat up the Program Director. Its his fault for picking THAT 40.
Okay, seriously...most of music you refer to coming from this station only suck according to you, I think I'd prefer to hear a top 40 station that plays Swing Out Sister or Tears for Fears rather than one that plays nothing but Matchbox 20 or Creed.
In fact, I'd be a little nostalgic for this station.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'know what...I bet the program director is roughly 26 years old. This was the music he was listening to when he was 16. He's being nostalgic.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Matchbox 20 and Creed certainly do suck but with so many new bands out there I think I'd rather the air time was spent on them than on Shanice and Sonia.

But I fear you might just be disagreeing with me because of an age old film forum feud that I once partook in and then ignored as it trailed on for the best part of 18 months without my input. If this is the case then I'm not interested in a 'your right, I'm wrong' thread, if this is not the case then accept my apologies and please allow me to point out that I would wager that:

A) The programming director is at least in his forties.

B) Any station that can employ a DJ who can make such a wide generalisation such as 'all eighties music is rubbish' is simply begging to be closed down.

C) Of course it only sucks ACCORDING TO ME (and to be fair I would imagine few people of my age would be in the line for a Chesney Hawkes comeback concert) but then that is popular opinion for you.

Calum Robert, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I'd rather the air time was spent on them than on Shanice and Sonia.
You've heard them thousands of times. I've heard them...um, almost never. Your stale-ass radio station would sound new and exotic to my ears.

But I fear you might just be disagreeing with me because of an age old film forum feud that I once partook in and then ignored as it trailed on for the best part of 18 months without my input.
Uhhh...yeah. We at ILM can sympathise, stuff you posted 6 months ago were still causing problems for up a week later.

I would wager that:
A) The programming director is at least in his forties.

Hmmm. What do you base this on?

B) Any station that can employ a DJ who can make such a wide generalisation such as 'all eighties music is rubbish' is simply begging to be closed down.
1) Yes, I agree. This guys a prick.
2) What about someone who says all Yank music is Rubbish? (MUST CONTROL FIST OF DEATH)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

In answer:

Some of the stuff I posted here in the old Strokes Vs Sleeper thread was a bit out of order. I emailed Julio personally to actually set things straight.

The stuff at a certain old film site was pathetic though. To the point that a thread with my name on it had about 100 replies two hours later!!! It was a sad state of affairs where people had nothing better to speak about than me! I'm really not that worth being obsessed about (and I'd wager that these very sad people, wherever they are now, are still speaking about me somewhere - I mean my only advice was for them to get a life and get laid a bit more often. Speaking about me for 24 hours a day is just not healthy, as flattering as it was at the time).

A) I'd say that the programming director is in his forties because most of the stuff on the station is actually disco one hit wonders from the 70s and 80s (Foreigner and T'Pau and Hot Chocolate etc etc).

B) The 'guy' is actually a girl and I'd agree she's probably a prick as well.

Ha ha ha!!! I forgot about that very fucking sweeping comment of mine about American music!!! Oh well, at least I'm not starting a 'God bless George Bush' thread or anything (in case you're wondering that is sarcasm, and God help all of us because of that idiot being in the Whitehouse). Actually, four of my top 10 fave albums of all time are from American artists so I WAS being a big smelly liar. I have my tickets to The White Stripes concert in Glasgow in April and can hardly wait...

Calum Robert, Monday, 3 March 2003 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

...the stuff on the station is actually disco one hit wonders from the 70s and 80s (Foreigner and T'Pau and Hot Chocolate etc etc).
Well, if I were programming a radio stations, I'd occasionally throw T'Pau (and possibly Hot Chocolate) on it, but not Foreigner. But it would also have lots and lots and lots of the stuff that was on 120 Minutes back in 87-91. And I'm sure there'd be somebody out there who'd be hating it.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it depends. I understand the need to play the top 10 (Gareth Gates, Will Young etc etc) as shit as it always is (with the odd exceptions - the past year has given us some really quality pop - TATU and The Sugababes have released some top tracks), but I believe in pushing new music as well. I mean, The Strokes, The Hives, The Vines (yeuch), The White Stripes and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are hardly unheard of nowadays - and putting on the odd track from them would not exactly be a painful thing to ask for. Kingdom FM never even play Nirvana for goodnessake. Every week I read about new bands in NME that I never really get the chance to hear - and it is starting to piss me off, to the point that you end up spending money in the hope an act is really worth the hype - which doesn't always pay off.

I should add, that a more selective bunch of DJ's might also help. If I had my own show it would be mainly indie orientated, albeit for classic tracks from The Stones, Bowie, Joy Division et al

For instance, I wouldn't know where to start when it came to garage or rap. So what I'm asking for is more variety. I just don't think you can defend Kim Wilde, ToTo and Chesney Hawkes. It's 2003 for goodnessake and I hear The Libertines are quite good (well I plan on buying their CD this weekend based on what I've heard of their stuff so far).

Calum Robert, Monday, 3 March 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth Gates...Will Young...Sugarbabes...Tatu...BMRC, etc.
Never get played here at all. You claim they suck, I'd be happy just to hear them even once so I can make up my own mind about it.
I keep offering to swap radio stations with the Brits, but no-one wants to make the swap.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I just don't think you can defend...
Kim Wilde
: Can't
ToTo: Don't want to.
Chesney Hawkes: Wouldn't know how.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

kim wilde is way better than the libertines

mark s (mark s), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is Chesney Hawkes anyway? I infer that she (?) is some sorta Kylie Minogue thang, but the name sounds like some redneck shitkicker who probably plays lots of Lee Greenwood covers.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

No, a he. He was the Top 40 sculpted pop version of Mike Edwards of Jesus Jones in terms of looks, I remember that much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Report from this morning:

Gareth Gates,
Huey Lewis and the News
Mel C
Handbags and Gladrags by Stereophonics
Weather Girls

I have it down low now so I can hardly hear i tho

Calum, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

In fact I have to strain to hear it now. But I'm sure they are gonna play The Andrea True Connection and Katrina and the Waves during the next hour. They never disappoint.

Calum, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

True Colours by Cyndi Lauper and Loveshack by B-52s.

Calum, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrea True Connection

as in More More More?

the rest of this station sounds a bit annoying, but this is one of the greatest songs ever!

my factory experience of radio was a mere 3 (three) things on rotation for 12 hours, or so it seemed

adverts for double glazing
the verve - the drugs dont work
ultra nate - free

the thing is though, i wouldnt want a station at work playing anything i liked, because it would ruin it. i would associate it with the factory floor.

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I just don't think you can defend... ToTo

africa is immortal!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 10:52 (twenty-three years ago)

''Some of the stuff I posted here in the old Strokes Vs Sleeper thread was a bit out of order. I emailed Julio personally to actually set things straight.''

'amusing' rather than out of order. those were the days!

''the thing is though, i wouldnt want a station at work playing anything i liked, because it would ruin it. i would associate it with the factory floor.''

I wouldn't want a radio station playing.

bad luck calum.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

calum, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

SAVAGE GARDEN.

I'M gonna cut my wrists with a paper clip!!!!

calum, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

BRYAN ADAMS.

Now do you all feel sorry for me?

calum, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

depends on what bryan adams track it is.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I love that Katrina and the Waves song. Actually, I like about 60% of the things you've listed so far ("True Colors" ROXX U R ALL GAY etc).

Bryan Adams is indefensible, though.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "run to you". And that one with sporty spice was ok.

*runs away*

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't it 'write to you'. that's OK. so is the theme to 'robin hood'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the only thing that looks good on me is you.

Fucking Erasure now.

calum, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, except for Stereophonics, this playlist looks like my "80s Cheese MP3s" folder.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"write to you" hahahahahahahahahaha Julio that is AWESOME

you don't like "Break Out" = you hate fun

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

''"write to you" hahahahahahahahahaha Julio that is AWESOME''

oh no!!! I'm terrible with lyrics. I mishear things all the fucking time. which is why i don't bother with them.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Kingdom FM has more listners than any other Scottish radio station. Thousands of people would disagree with you, so fuck you you bell end!

Matthew Harris, Monday, 4 October 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

This being Calum before he 'went bad'?
