Yeah...like anybody even *remembers* these two...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Speak for y'self.

While Gene Loves Jezebel had a handful of redeeming moments (pretty much culminating in the Discover album, and dropping sharply immediately thereafter), the Cult trounces them completely.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Moreover, Gene Loves Jezebel never really achieved that mythical one great single. "Heartache" and "Desire" came a bit close, but still fell short....as did virtually everything on the House of Dolls album (though the ode to possible infidelity, "Suspicion", came close). The Cult, meanwhile, shat out great singles in their sleep for a little while.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

but "Desire" was pretty big in the US, right? I just remember that the version they released here was boring compared to the original.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Lemme guess, the Killing Joke could kick both of their asses, though.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course they could, but Killing Joke aren't Goths, "meta-goths" or cock rockers, so I fail to see your point, your lordship.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the U.S. single release of "Desire" was crap, replete with needless invokations to "come'n'get it!" An inferior version to be sure.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

what was the G luvs J song that went,"wheat farmers..come and see my cow!!!". I love that one.

Scott Seward, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I think a more apt TS would be the Cult vs. the Mission. Gene Love Jezebel's closest peers were probably their old touring pals, Flesh For Lulu.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Or the bolshoi.

Scott Seward, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I know theres not relation, I was just preventing the need for you to bark "...but these bands do not honour the fire. Therefore they are irrelevent."

Durhey

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The most unlikely moment in Rick Rubin's production-impersario career is getting The Cult to groove on "Love Removal Machine".

earlnash, Monday, 3 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

These bands do not honor the fire. They are irrelevant.

(Seriously I was never big on either, I would rather discuss Sisters of Mercy or something like that, they're completely silly)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but we already did a TS:Sister of Mercy, we're down to scraping the bottom of the barrel until new Sisteresque bands show up and take over the world.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone remembers the Cult, what are you talking about? They made some classic singles and had fabulous haircuts and rock star poses. I don't think I've heard GLJ but their album covers are hideous. The Cult totally wins.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 3 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

What were we taking sides against? You can't very well go "Taking sides: Sisters of Mercy" because that's just letting us all go hanging. Anyway, let's just talk about Interpol instead, and pretend none of this ever happened.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously I was never big on either

C'mon, the Cult! The Manics were always trying to be arena-rock, the Cult actually made it here AND there.

let's just talk about Interpol instead

I'm always up for talking about the Kitchens of Distinction, sure. *flees*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Sometimes aspiration is better than actually making it there. Bon Jovi are arena rock too.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

More's the pity in their case.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay...subthreads:
1) TS: Sisters ov Mercy vs The Mission
2) TS: Sisters ov Mercy vs The Swans
3) TS: Sisters ov Mercy vs Cocteau Twins
4) TS: Sisters ov Mercy vs Van Halen
Begin your attack run....nnnnoww!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the Sisters versus the Mission is quasi-pointless, as everyone knows that the Sisters were at their finest when the Mission (Wayne & Craig) were among them.

Secondly, it's not THE Swans, but simply....Swans.

The Sisters and the Cocteaus serve entirely different ends, thus pitting them against each other is like saying: Taking Sides: Lawnmowers or Grapefruit. Pointless.

The Sisters versus Van Halen? One could draw a parallel between both bands' respective bouts of storied in-fighting, but that would ultimately get you nowhere. Hardcore Sisters fans tend to lean towards the afore-mentioned Wayne/Craig years, in much the same manner hardcore Van Halen fans insist on the DLR era. But, once again, they serve different purposes. But, if I had to pick one.....I'd say Van Halen are the more versatile outfit. Still, the Sisters have more aura and presence. Fuck. I love them both.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I KNOW they're all different. That's why I pitted them against each other! (Besides, Lawnmowers Rock and Grapefruit Suck.)

Secondly, it's not THE Swans, but simply....Swans.
Bah. Semantics. I've heard Jarboe herself refer to her band as THE Swans (I don't care what Michael Gira sez. Calling them THE Swans makes it funnier when you play their records for yer opera lovin' grandma.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
My ego would pick the Cult.
My eros would pick GLJ.

...but "Gene Love Jezebel's closest peers were probably... Flesh For Lulu" is hardly a just association. C'mon, they were more like the NY Dolls; Rock, not Art.

They looked like the `Dolls (FFL), but certainly didn't sound a thing like them. They were pals and touring partners with the Jezebels.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Anybody remember "Light of the World" by Balaam & the Angel? CLASSIC.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

The first three GLJ albums are about to be reissued.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Once again, Ned appears and makes my goddamn day! CHEERS, YOU HIRSUTE BASTARD!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

That's great news!

Also, I think my favorite Gene Loves Jezebel song is "Sweetest Thing".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

It's a good one! I'm really looking forward to these reissues, actually -- the first album in particular is an astoundingly underrated effort. Release date is June 7; all CDs will have a second disc of bonus tracks.

14. Psycho 2 *

I have been waiting for this to be released on CD for SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO long.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

The Cult's lyrics were humorless, absolutely-ridiculosly-cliched lameness.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Surely that was the point. (If I remember right he was one of two people to complain about Spinal Tap 'making fun of a beautiful and true thing' -- the other person was Blaze Bayley, the reject Iron Maiden brought in for part of the nineties.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

('He' being Ian Astbury in this case.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 May 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

I can understand cock rock w/ Gothic mysticism in some pure form being "a true and beautiful thing," but don't really understand the appeal of making a humorless cliche out of it.
