Yeah. Have seen one of these in ageeeessss!
But it needed to be said.

No, the British cultural equivalent of emo was those male 6th form students who bought a metric tonne of Urban Decay eyeliner and nail varnish in the aftermath of Placebo releasing "Pure Morning". These people now form the front rows of Polyphonic Spree gigs, and ironically go to "cheese nights" at their university nightclubs.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

CUSTOS MUST BE BEATEN HORRIBLY.

There's no link between The Cure and Coldplay that I can hear!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Simmer down, Dan. I'm a Cure fan, too.
I hear a bit of Cure (OMIGODHESGONNAUSETHETHRICEACCURSEDWORD) influence in Coldplay. But then again, I might be hallucinating it: I hear "Curish-ness" in nearly any Brit-post-punk band with weepy lyrics/vocals.

i think you'll find Hundred Reasons and Econoline are the UK's answer to Emo

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind Coldplay, personally, but to hear our British compatriots talk about them with such ire, I can only assume that Coldplay are the UK equivalent to Matchbox Twenty.

Alex in NYC is OTM.

No, but they might be equivalent to the Picasso sketch your granny picked up for 15p at the car boot sale 'cos she liked the frame.

David Dickinson to thread!

chris j (chris j), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i always thought coldplay was the uk equivalent to nu metal.

Shannon u r a simple life. Emo is a form that is emotionally driven. There are no set guide lines to this form of ART that all music is, yes even brittney spears, i shudder to think it is art. You might not apperciate emo, or coldplay, but that doesnt mean it is sucky. I might just mean that you like bluegrass, or Adult contemperary, or something else of that nature. Maybe you even like Miss, i gues sorta Mrs., form of expression. Personall i apperciate the sounds of emo and coldplay, along with lots of other untraditional forms of music, like indie, and even pop punk. SO maybe you sound not speak for all of us in the US when you make a remark!!! By te way, the cure is brilliant, and the song All of This by Blink 182 featuring The Cure is wonderful. Travis Barkers Percussion, the contrast in vocals, the bas rifts, is orgasmic!

God bless you, Google.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's all take a moment to apperciate orgasmic bas rifts.

Finally, shock and awe!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The last few posts have been like reading the music letters page on Teletext. Today's gem "I have an eclectic taste in music, I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Corrs".

You're either with the future, or you're in the way!!! You must all go cower beneath your stacks of bluegrass records. The strange (to our ears) sounds of pop punk will be the music of tomorrow.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess that all depends on what you consider "emo". http://www.fourfa.com/

chadski, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i own a record by funeral for a friend. it's sort of emo

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Emo is fucking garbage. Pop punk is garbage. Coldplay got soul and Simple Plan don't.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

soul? some mistake surely?

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It means they eat at KFC.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the stupidest thread ever.

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

answer to thread qustion:
yes.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Answer to thread question:
Obviously not AND who cares?

Stupid (Stupid), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Emo is derived from hardcore. So no. Coldplay are a sensitive indie band, nothing to do with emo. And not the antichrist as a lot of people seem to enjoy believing.
