I've never heard a Billy Graham cd, no comment.

fetishizing the music/fashion/politics/lifestyle of previous generations. did our grandparents do this? Is that what Westerns were all about?

Stuart (Stuart), Monday, 3 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well yeah but 'revivalism' is a pretty broad thing as it applies to music, no? do you just mean in the basest sort of decade/era/scene-rehash sense?

i just got a big Bomp! records comp from 1980 and most of it sounds revivalist (surf guitars, fright rock, "Niki and the Corvettes", a cover of "Think" by Aretha Franklin) at least if you take the idea that the good stuff in rock in 1980 = disco and post-punk and punk; I'm less sure of this after hearing this comp actually, which is fantastic

My mom told me once that bell-bottoms were already revivalist in the 60s - she said they reminded everyone of sailor pants from WWII, in a kind of more homegrown version of Fred Astaire style

And Napolen's white horse wasn't black either.

Actually, the entire point about revivalism is there isn't supposed to be anything new to it. But it is still great if a great era is revived. Britpop was great, and Electroclash is at least great on paper (although the latter genre hasn't quite been able to deliever material matching the material that was around in 1982)

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is pretty derivative, isn't it?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

still, isn't it nice to have a thread to argue about again?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

seems like I've been here before...
