D4 - Classic or Dud?

I'm going to be writing an article partially about these guys (but also partially about THE ELECTRIC SIX HOORAY), and from what I can tell listening to 6twenty, well... they're... pfuh. Really. You know what all of nu-garage's detractors were saying when Is This It? came out? Take all the misdirected, hyperbolic irritation aimed at the Strokes and throw it right at these guys instead (only instead of "Velvet Underground" say "The Go"). Boring riffs, boring lyrics, BORING BORING BORING. I swear if these guys become MTV2 darlings I will... well, I'll be sad.

I wish I could better elaborate on the specific nature of their boringness but suffice it to say that if a band can play attempted-energetic garage-rock yet bore the bejesus out of me, he of low-standard rockfan dorkness, it's really just not a good sign.

(I couldn't look up to see if this thread had been done before 'cos their name's so short)

(Also when I first got this assignment I thought my editor meant Dillinger Four. Christ, at least they can write interesting SONG TITLES, as opposed to, say, "Rocknroll Motherfucker")

But there is no such thing! (I agree with you on the worth of the D4, though.)

A load of people told me they were fantastic so I went to see them play in my local and they were good by the standards of the local in question - climbing up the rigging and generally acting like they wanted to be there and such - and seemed like quite nice lads as well. I find them quite endearing. But yeah, they're absolutely boring as shit.

Ferg (Ferg), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:40 (twenty-three years ago)

A menace. Probably not one of the 50 most rocking garage bands to come out of Australia or New Zealand in the past 25 years. Which may well explain why, if the even equally generic Datsuns don't beat them to it, they could be the next Vines!

I don't know what that "even" is doing in the above post. Oh well. (Also, "50" was a random number. "100" might work just as well.)

chuck, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i prefer the Datsuns

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Chuck, I'm guessing more in the four-figure range. (Disclaimer: this is coming from someone who thinks Radio Birdman's Radios Appear is the best rock album of 1978 not involving Ric Ocasek)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Rick Ocasek played on One Nation Under a Groove?!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, and Bernie Worrell played on The Cars (hence the AWESOME KEYBOARD SOUND)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i hope people don't judge new zealand music by this worthless band or the datsuns.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

bic runga once caused me to shout at my ex-gf

In joy or pain?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:26 (twenty-three years ago)

someone once introduced herself to me as "bic runga's best friend". *vomits*

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

d4 aim for ragged and all their clothes look perfectly ironed. they wear the same outfits as some of my greyingcan't imagine the new york dolls mothers were happy for them. they're shed seven, and in 25 years from now, genuinly happy middle aged professionals who used to wear jeans an jacket will be playing their record to unimpressed nephews.

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic. If only for debut single 'Rock'n'Roll Motherfucker'.
