One of the greats.
I have only one CD, a greatest hits. But I remember hearing a great Hank Ballard song used in the movie "The River's Edge." Anyone remember what it was and where I can get it?

Way underrated. Somebody really needs to collect all the JB-produced singles he made in one convenient place. "Butter Your Popcorn"! Also, some of the stuff he did in the mid-'70s when he was obsessed with streaking is pretty amazing ("Let's Go Streaking" etc.).

My dad used to go see HB and the Midnighters play in Chester, PA in the '50s (before the crippling urban decay made the city the subject of all those Ed 101 movies they showed in college). I bet he is pretty bent about HB being dead.

"Sexy Ways," "Finger-Poppin' Time," "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go" are all great. But my favorite Hank Ballard record is probably "What Is This I See," in which he hilariously (in its obviousness) recasts the Sensational Nightingale's gospel hit "Standing in the Judgement" as a ode to picking up girls.

That's awful news. I have a few of his albums, and "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go" is somewhere up there among my favourite records.

i think hank ballard was the first 50s r&b i listened to. picked up a Charly records compilation for some reason, way back in the mid 80s. had "let's go", "sexy ways", etc. after that, there was no turning back. didn't listen to any "modern" music for quite a few years after that. Where's this "What is this I see?" track available? Don't think I've heard that one.

a pioneer of the idea that singles work as part of a public argument with other artists?

Ballard's 1968 reworking of "Licking Stick-Licking Stick":

"How You Gonna Get Respect (When You Haven't Cut Your Process Yet)"--when you go to the nearest barbershop, "tell 'em Hank Ballard sent ya."

Lotsa blues singers did this in the 30s/40s, but yeah, HB is absolutely classic. I didn't know about his JB-produced stuff until last year, and I wish I could hear more.

He had a nice "hiccuping" vocal style.

I found it on a 45, but it's also on The Very Best of Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (on Collectables).
