PLEASE tell me I didn't hear "Love Sick" in a Victoria's Secrets commercial last night.
Please tell me that, or my life doesn't make sense anymore.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

What have you got against bras?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Not much, apparently.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the ones from Victoria's Secrets never fit me right.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

somehow i can't imagine dylan wearing one but if he does that's cool

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

This is worse than Lou Reed selling scooters.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Which Dylan song would make the best jingle in a bra ad? I nominate "You're a Big Girl Now."

EC, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"Blowin' in the Wind"

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you recall the when the NFL used Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" in one of their promo spots? I wanted to wretch. Not for the song mind you, but for the god-awful use of it in a football promo. Not that I don't like football. I guess I just hate it when artists I admire musically sell out.

Davlo (Davlo), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"Property of Jesus"

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Iggy Pop selling boat cruises?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

That Reed NFL spot was a terrific commercial. Great 70s clips (many snowy/bandagey/beery iirc) (no sepiatone!) and one of the few sports ads to evoke (via Reed) the disappointments AND constancy of fandom (it's our wife/life and we're its), rather than the quasi-military triumphalism or maleweepy sentimentality of any other ad I can remember.

And I'm not even a sports fan!

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Lay lady Lay would work.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

my god i really want to see that nfl commercial now!! that sounds awesome!!

soundtrack for upcoming calvinball commercial: metal machine music side 4

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

(also iirc it ran during a non-nfl thing, the winter olympics maybe? [ie difft emotional triggers for difft audience] and didn't run for very long...)

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

A Sunday during the NFL season IS a perfect day.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Now I'm curious to see this Dylan/Victoria's Secret commericial; what an odd thing.

What about the Stooges "TV Eye" in (I think) a car commercial. Everytime I hear that scream it just makes me so happy.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

It works well with the image, tho I do think it's a little goofy. Ah well, it's still cool to hear the Stooges on TV.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Dylan did enough by 1974 that he should have the right to hawk anything he damn well pleases.

..."You're a Big Girl Now" -- now THAT's funny.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm certainly not questioning his right to do anything. I'm just curious as to why now and why this ad campaign in particular. He certainly can't need the money that bad, or does he?
Has another Dylan song ever been licensed for use in a commercial?

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" was used for Kotex.

dan fitz (danfitz), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tangled Up in Blue" for 2000 Flushes.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the ad is quite good. And I bet they paid him a shitload of money--"needs" is not really a relevant concept here ;)

Ben Williams, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Depending on how comfortable the bra is, "I Shall Be Released" would be a good song.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" was used for some financial company.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

blimey it's old favourites week at ilm!

these both have some terrific stuff on them:
marketing classic or dud
music in ads

fritz was on FI-AH on the second

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

this is the post where i remind everyone that "some artists do not have control of their own work" and then vanish. I dont know if it is true for dylan, but it is true for many.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

They should use "The Chant of the Ever-Circling Skeletal Family" to sell bra bra bra bra bra bra bra bras.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

"Clothesline Saga" for Whirlpool Dryers ("Tired of hanging your clothes on a line?...")

"Sitting On A Barbed-Wire Fence" for Preparation H.

"Nothing Was Delivered" for a Postal Firm ("Tired of not having your packages arrive on time?...)

Charles McCain, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

this thread title summoned up the most hilarious mental image evah. I hope I never see the actual commercial, as the one I have in my head is surely much better.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

another reason to not watch televison.
a grossman is otm

kephm, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
From what i know Dylan is in need of some cash. a recent divorce and a legal battle took alot out of him last i heard in 2002. Id like to see the commercial

Jackson State, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's about five second long and gies like this.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's about five-ten seconds long and goes like this:

Shot 1. Girl in bra.
Shot 2. Dylan staring into the distance in close-up
Shot 3. Venice seen from the Grand Canal.
Shot 4. Pack shot/logo

With a snippet of "Love Sick" over the top. Weird.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dylan being broke makes me sad. he should set up a paypal account. i'll send him $20!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Posted this to another list today: I think they are trying to appeal to girlfriends of male rock critics who also shop at Victoria's Secret. It's a growing market!

Sara Sherr, Friday, 2 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

girlfriends of male rock critics

teeny (teeny), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

he should set up a paypal account
pay, lady, pay...pay for my big brass bed...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

this commercial is painfully un-sexy, as if you needed someone to tell you that.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it doesn't sound like there are nearly enough girls in bras in this commercial, and too much grizzled dylan face.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I read somewhere that basically, the pitch went something like this: Victoria's Secret called Dylan and said "Do you want to go to Venice and hang out with supermodels in their underwear?"

And Dylan said: "If you want me to, yeeeeeees."

Scott CE (Scott CE), Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard he was hoping for a third to match her pair...

A.E. Foster, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"Leopardskin Pill Box Bra"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If they were manufactured breasts then "COLD IRONS BOUND"

A.B. Fan, Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

'Course "WIGGLE WIGGLE " would be too obvious

and if it was RuPaul in the shot, "WORLD GONE WRONG " might work or "HE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE" depending on your view

"BALLAD IN PLAIN D " could be OK

if there was a chance of accident then, "DRIFTER'S ESCAPE"

A.B. Fan, Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

has this commercial really been airing for a year? (and i still have yet to see it, dammit?)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the one they aired last year just used the music, the new one actually has his grizzled visage in it

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 8 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and what's this syory I hear about Dylan designing the label and lending his name to a wine?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 9 April 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Dylan must have come to the conclusion that most of that 60's rebellion stuff was a failure - and therefore, if you can't beat'em, join'em. The only things "Blowin' in the wind" from that era are broken promises and dreams.

bill thibodeau, Saturday, 10 April 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
"I used to care, but things have changed."

earlnash, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

“I believe Bob Dylan’s the greatest chronicler of American history,” says Wakely. “And all those characters that he’s created, Maggie from ‘Maggie’s Farm,’ Joey Gallo, Peggy Day, ‘Hurricane’ Carter, Tambourine Man — what if they all collided in the day after JFK’s assassination, found themselves in Greenwich Village for different reasons, and were propelled along a journey at this time of deep turmoil in the streets, where the world was changing?”

morrisp, Thursday, 19 March 2020 17:50 (six years ago)

had no idea Dylan created Joey Gallo and Hurricane Carter, how does he do it

Οὖτις, Thursday, 19 March 2020 17:53 (six years ago)
