Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives or Quiet Life and the Tin Drum etc. what 'Japan' period do you preffer?

i think their rock period is prety dated in compere to the brilliant Experimental Synth/Kraut/New Wave era.
i adore the fact that they couldn't be put into any catagory in the time Quiet Life came out.

rex jr., Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The later stuff is better but I still like the 1st two albums cuz Karn's bass seems more out of place on them

dave q, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a difficult choice; i like the relative toughness of their early releases as well as the sheen of their later material. I'll take the toss up with Quiet Life.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I *like* the goofy suburban glam of the first two, but you can't beat Quiet Life and especially, Gentlemen Take Polaroids.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you for asking this question again, rex; I'll take any chance I can get to champion Japan's early glam period! Love, love, love "Obscure Alternatives". "Quiet Life" is indeed good as well, but by the time of "Tin Drum" they were a complete snooze.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

'Life Without Buildings' is a fucking Awsome,Brilliant, unique track!
i never heared most of their stuff but if it Describes most of Japans sound for and after "Tin Drum" then i'll probably Love it.

rex jr., Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I like "The Unconventional." It's good.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Japan were absolutely dreadful in the late 70s, while their 80s material is just plain brilliant - possibly the best ever albums to come out of the New Romantics age.

"Tin Drum" remains one of my favourite albums ever.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Def the 80's. I have a vinyl of the live 'Oil on Canvas' that I listen to on a regular basis.

Clearly the latter. The postpunk Japan I have never quite liked. From the "Life In Tokyo" single onwards they were great though, and getting better with each album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I was certain this was about Japanese music! The Taj Mahal Travellers or Merzbow!

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Zora (Zora), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm looking forward to that DVD. Finally.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 16 February 2006 04:04 (twenty years ago)

DVD, great! Quiet Life is their best, methinks. With Gentlemen Taks Polaroids hot on its heels.

willem -- (willem), Thursday, 16 February 2006 07:34 (twenty years ago)

I second the above.

(Look above for just one second)

Peppy Zimbot, Thursday, 16 February 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Queit Life is knocked down a bit because of the song "Despair." GTM is just perfect, however. No skippable tracks (I skip "Ghost" too!).

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 16 February 2006 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm all for the DVD!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 February 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

DVD?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

If they release it as a Region 1 as well, HELL FUCKING YEAH!!!!!!

OMG, I just breezed on into Paul Rymer's site, and:

Details: Promo videos for Life In Tokyo, Quiet Life, I Second That Emotion, Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Swing, Visions Of China, Nightporter. Oil On Canvas - Live: Overture (Burning Bridges), Sons of Pioneers, Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Swing, Cantonese Boy, Visions of China, Canton, Ghosts, Still Life in Mobile Homes, Methods of Dance , TheArt of Parties, Voices Raised in Welcome, Hands Held in Prayer.

I AM DYING HERE. OGMOMGOMGOMG. IT HAS EVERY SINGLE VIDEO I HAD HOPED WOULD BE ON THE DVD AND THEN SOME. FUCKING HELL, I WILL SO CRY IF THIS ISN'T AVAILABLE AS A REGION 1 DISC.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 February 2006 05:55 (twenty years ago)

(And yeah, I know I can play it on my computer, but fuck, I want to play it on a regular TV instead.) (I am literally shaking now. I never believed there would be a DVD release of Japan's videos, but.... Now all I need is for David Sylvian to release his videos onto DVD, and... fuck, I'm thisclose to breaking down now.)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 February 2006 05:58 (twenty years ago)

blow $30 on a region-free dvd player and you can watch videos from all over the world.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 17 February 2006 06:07 (twenty years ago)

They sell those things in the U.S.? Rock! (Oh the things I'll do for fandom....)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 February 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

(BTW, as for the title question -- I have a slight preference for the "experimental '80s"-era Japan, but it's very slight. I love it ALL. And Adolescent Sex has been proven to be a great album to listen to when I'm under a great deal of stress, so yay for that.)

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 17 February 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

you wouldn't believe the shit they sell in the US. literally.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 17 February 2006 12:35 (twenty years ago)

also: gentlemen take polaroids for the win. never liked tin drum.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 17 February 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

I second that emotion, hazel.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 17 February 2006 12:42 (twenty years ago)

you wouldn't believe the shit they sell in the US. literally.

I ain't going there.

also: gentlemen take polaroids for the win. never liked tin drum.

Why not? Do you consider it too electronic? Or... well, why? I mean, Gentlemen Take Polaroids is my favorite Japan album too (I think that'd be the answer most Japan fans would mention), but I quite loved Tin Drum too. "Canton", "Still Life In Mobile Homes", "The Art Of Parties", "Cantonese Boy", and "Visions Of China" (yes, their big hit) are all particularly brilliant songs IMO. But I enjoy all of the album.

See Me, Repeat Me (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 18 February 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

mediocre YouTube quality versions of a couple of videos and session tracks

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 18 February 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

i don't know, tin drum is just too spare. there's no slinkiness. the whole exotic asian thing also kind of grates. sometimes it sounds like a halfassed thompson twins album.

i haven't really given the arty rock 70's japan a shot yet... i would have bought the reissues but they're ludicrously expensive compared to the experimental 80's reissues for no good reason. hell, i even got the tin drum box... so it's not that i dislike it.

Alright, both the CD and DVD are in the shops today. (in Belgium, at least. got the DVD.)

The Oil On Canvas section looks and sounds slighty hissy, when you're used to today's standards, and so do some of the promo clips, but all in all: verrrry nice.

(no booklet, credits on the inside of the transparant sleeve. plus a small but over the top text by Chris Roberts - there's only 12 lines of text but it namedrops what feels like 10 hip and cool names like Edward Hopper and Egon Schiele)

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 25 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

(this one is PAL, All regions, 84 minutes, 4:3 picture format)

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 25 March 2006 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Try not to watch with someone who finds their looks hilarious. (I have a little trouble with those looks sometimes as it is already, but a friend very loudly rofling at eyebrowless pink haired pink pants wearing earringed bass players in the background doesn't help.) Will have to watch later when alone, I guess.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 25 March 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

OMG:

Their look inspired the mangaka Kaoru Tada: the fictional band Beehive of her manga Ai shite knight is based on them.

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 25 March 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Oops @ that compilation CD, according to their fansiteNightporter:

"The Very Best of Japan" CD and DVD out on Monday 27th March.

Longtime readers of this site will not be surprised to learn that yet again mistakes have been made with a Japan release. It is good that this album is available, but with a little more thought it could have been GREAT. I was quite excited about the original tracklisting as it was rather cool - all of the 7" single hits on one CD - fabulous. Sadly, as I should have expected, the record company's apparent unfamiliarity with the material has let them down. Specifically, "I Second That Emotion", "European Son", "Gentlemen Take Polaroids" and "Nightporter" are the regular album versions. "The Art of Parties" is the 12" version, also available on "Exorcising Ghosts". "Canton" is also the same as on "Oil on Canvas". A lot of the credits are also incorrect. I'm not going to list them all here. Why should I be bothered about such details? Apologies for the bitch but when will a record company take the back catalogue of this group seriously and get things right?

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 25 March 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

OK, is this out on vinyl though? I really really really want the extended "European Son" on vinyl.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Saturday, 25 March 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Haven't seen it in the store I found the CD and DVD in, but I don't think they sell vinyl though, so I don't know.

The DVD has track list errors too, by the way. Still Life in Mobile Homes = Methods Of Dance and vice versa.

I will give the boring answer and say I love Gentleman Take Polaroids the most, it's so ambient and moody. Moreover, I prefer their experimental 80's phase and think Tin Drum is very good. But to be open minded I just bought the remastered version of Quiet Life off ebay last week. It didnt evoke any reaction out of me whatsoever, I don't see what the fuss is about this album. Me no likey :(

I'm not sure about buying the DVD because one of the dudes in the band looks exactly like my dad, it would be hard to keep a straight face. I'll stick to the audio material lol.

Miranda Leigh (Miranda Leigh), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

Just remebered Quiet Life is in the experimental 80's catergory, I like everything else during this period accept for that album.

Miranda Leigh (Miranda Leigh), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Hmm... Japan DVD would be cool, although I have so many of their clips and live stuff on video already (woot for Karn's duck walk!), it'd have to be like, remastered footage or something to make me jump at this point I think.

I didn't used to like glam-era Japan as much back in the 80s, but have come to appreciate it a lot more. As someone stated upthread "the Unconventional" is a great song - quite teh sexy.

What I would be curious to get my hands on again (as I gave away my vinyl copy) is Karn's first solo album, terrible as it was. Call it morbid curiosity perhaps.

I have recently rediscovered Japan / David Sylvian after being a fan in the late seventies and Eighties, I was at the concert filmed for Oil on canvas and it's a blast watching it on the new DVD..my favourite album has to be GTM.. not a bad track and shows the way forward as far as music was concerned then..i'm busy getting back all of the Japan releases I had all those years ago...and foolishly gave away...One particular track i find mesmerising at the moment is the other side of life from Exorcising Ghosts...awesome song...

I just dl'd The Very Best of Japan last week even though I own most of this. It's excellent — pushing their Eurodisco side gently to the fore and a good place to get "Life In Tokyo" and "European Son" if you don't already. The "Art of Parties" 12" or single or whatever it actually is, is terrific — not a replacement for the album version, but much darker (as a side-note, I've spent a decade trying to figure out how they created those brass sounds in 1981 — listening to the long wind-down coda on this, it's clearly a live brass section that's uncredited).

To be honest, irrespective of tracklisting errors, The Very Best of... is prob. a better listen from start to finish than any Japan record — including Tin Drum. And given Japan's peculiar datedness (in that it's aesthetically miles away from pop today), it'd be my first choice to recommend for newbies to dig in.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 30 October 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I'd probably pick Oil On Canvas, if newbies would ask me. But they never do :-)

StanM (StanM), Monday, 30 October 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

seven years pass...

As much as I love the trio of Quiet Life, Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum, I seriously think Japan's debut Adolescent Sex is an incredibly underrated record, even though it feels like the work of an entirely different band. Out of all their albums, Obscure Alternatives is the only one I'd say that I wasn't keen on - aside from 'Automatic Gun', '...Rhodesia' and 'The Tenant', which to me are all great, the rest of the album comes across to me as a bit of a mess.
