I think its taken from polls of polls in magazines.

Helen, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists, lists.

LISTS.

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

One day the anal retentives will make a list so big it will destroy them all.

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Helen just tried...and we all lived to tell the tale.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

These lists are only interesting to see what the unusual suspects are. This lists surprises, the Magnetic Fields and the Congos and most amazingly Duran Duran at 65! Bellini's must be popular at the King's Tower just now.

They're also useful to watch DJ Martian busting a gut. He reminds me of Mary Whitehouse religiusly watching 'smut' on the TV so he can get all worked up. He is of course right though, too many skinny guys with guitars.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-three years ago)

These lists are only interesting to see what the unusual suspects are.
Yeah....check out *This* abomination against God and Nature... and shudder in abject disgust.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Those Nutty Netherlanders...what will they think of next?

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The Strokes rank higher than Sgt. Peppers = THIS LIST IS GREAT

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

No fucking Killing Joke of course (fuckin' heretics), yet the Strokes, Coldplay, Eminem, the Streets and the fucking Coral make the list? How long has the Coral album been out.....three months?

Also....the VINES ??!?!?!?!?!?! Please give me some paltry semblance of a fucking break!

What A Fucking Crock Of Unfettered Excrement!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Two questions:
1) How Come/Why does Live's Throwing Copper impress people from the Netherlands so damned much?
2) If this is unfettered excrement...How does one fetter excrement?

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The Acclaimed site is really great. However, I am waiting for Colin Larkin to update his Virgin Top 1000 list too (still no update since the 2000 edition - containing not a single album not from the 20th century)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:37 (twenty-three years ago)

this giant list will devour us all! etc!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus fuck, people still USE that meme?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The Strokes at number 7 kills any hope of credibility this list might have wished for. That's just silly that is.

Calum Robert, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:55 (twenty-three years ago)

rock lists are my favouritest thing in the Whooooole world, but this one leaves me with a flat, bored feeling. Not enough to get myself into a rage about, nothing to say "oooh that was surprising about." just, yeah, that was pretty much as i expected.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:26 (twenty-three years ago)

69. Andrew WK - I Get Wet

i only just noticed this. scrap what i said about there being nothing for me to get into a rage about.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes it is 68 places too low.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but a fitting position, surely?

Strange how certain of these entries (Underworld, Aphex x 2, Slint, Jackson, Wu-Tang, Madonna) were not even considered good enough to be included in the NME's end-of-year lists for their respective years.

And merely expressing a liking for "Rio" would have been enough to get you sacked from the NME circa '82.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

tee-hee

i've no real objection to very current recs getting in. i think these best album lists should be a snapshot of the 100 most relevant/great/listened to albums AT THAT GIVEN POINT IN TIME. it can be interesting to see how really old albums' places will fluctuate wildly (it seems Astral Weeks isn't quite as high in these things as it would have been a few years go - not that i mind particularly). people say "that's stupid 'cos x album won't be there in a year's time," but it would be dishonest not to go with what's on your mind at the particular time of voting.

but andrew fucking wk! it's an absolute arsehole of an album at ANY point in time!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is his appearance at 69 a deliberate joke? (in the innuendo sense?)

"When the authorities found Matos's body, it took them eight hours just to get the smile off his face"

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Usual mistakes of course: "Like A Prayer" instead of "Erotica"; "Dusty In Memphis" instead of "Everything's Coming Up Dusty"; "Scott 4" instead of "Tilt"; no "Metal Box"; "Elephant" instead of "100th Window."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

No Top 100 list that has Andrew WK's album in it could possibly be taken seriously anyway. I mean, NME guys, if you insist of having a hair metal record in the Top 100, then I'd actually prefer Def Leppard any day..

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and "Trans-Europe Express" instead of "Electric Cafe"; "Strangeways Here We Come" IN ANY POSITION; "Songs In The Key Of Life" instead of "Sign 'O' The Times."

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

99. The Congos - Heart Of The Congos

I don't think I've ever heard of this one. Anyone care to elaborate?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Lee Perry's finest hour? JA '77; vocal group, COMPLETELY URGENT AND KEY RECORD - get the 2CD redux version on Blood & Fire, which I think is still available. Deeply spiritual and avant-garde at the same time.

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

another terrible list.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

But you shouldn't take NME seriously anyway. They're anti-capitalist yet sucking the dick of the major labels and their web site is sponsored by Coke! Great stuff.

Wells is anti-capitalism but anti-animal rights yet it's hard to see how that works when his arguement against animal rights is based upon capitalism rhetoric (i.e. it's what we've always done, put some more hairspray in that dog's eyes).

Anyhow, I'm digressing. The entire paper is hypocritical toss, the list is a joke and NME's annual MayDay issue is always good for a laugh. Wasn't it just a few years ago they were giving Robbie 8/10 album reviews before he told them to fuck off and this was quietly written out of NME history. And some of their to albums they slated originally.

Andrew WK must be someone's idea of a poor joke.

calum, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

AND WHERE IS DESERTER'S SONGS??????

calum, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

they gave him the 8/10 review after he told them to fuck off, if i remember rightly.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm surprised deserters didn't get in as well, it was an NME album of the year.

a few NMe albums of the year missed out, as far as i can see:

happy mondays, bjork, sugar, tricky, beck, the rev, the flips.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus fuck, people still USE that meme?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

The eternal connundrum of lists amuses me, i.e. THERE IS NO DEFINITIVE MUSICAL LIST EVER! : - D

s samson, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

''THERE IS NO DEFINITIVE MUSICAL LIST EVER!''

only my list is definitive ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I always have a vision of this: 'Outraged music fans cry out: DEFINITIVE MUSIC LIST FOUND IN LOCKER IN SEATTLE. Mass exodus of record shop clerks and freelance journalists leave cities around world to view list.'

s samson, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"THERE IS NO DEFINITIVE MUSICAL LIST EVER!"
Whaaaat? I thought the Top 100 Alternative Albums in the back of the Spin Alt Guide settled this debate. Madonna's The Immaculate Conception is the officially best album evah.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you sure you're not confusing this with The Immaculate COLLECTION, a supposed greatest hits album fucked up by stupid Shep Pettibone remixes?

And why are there never any greatest hits/compilation albums in these lists?

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought compilations were not artistic statements but cheapo money grabs. Hence the non-appearances.

s samson, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you sure you're not confusing this with The Immaculate COLLECTION
oops fatfingered freudian slip.
Hey, maaaan. Cut me some slack. Its MORNING in America.

(Shit! Did I just quote Reagan?)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

In other words, I just woke up and the coffee is still perking (and I, as yet, am not.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Usual mistakes of course: "Like A Prayer" instead of "Erotica"

Not a mistake. "Like a Prayer" remains Madonna's best moment, while "Erotica" remains her worst album ever.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

A.A. Gill said, correctly, that these lists are not about the albums as such, they are about ourselves. Also, nobody is meant to agree with the list, so why is everyone getting their knickers in a twist? Obviously, we all have our complaints, and I do think Andrew W.K. in the top 100 is just to aggravate people, which we all know the NME just loves to do.

Personally, I think Astral Weeks kicks Pet Sounds, Forever Changes and Revolver into touch, but recent lists suggest its reputation may be falling. Shame.

Any list taken from such a small pool is bound to look strange, and the top 1000 from that Acclaimed Music site does have a much more balanced look to it. The good, it appears, will out.

Shane

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

More importantly, a Top 100 isn't enough. A Top 100 will just list 100 of the albums usually in those lists. It doesn't give the musically interested listener a lot of opportunities to discover new good music. The Top 1000s from http://bounce.to/acclaimedmusic/, and the Top 1000 books from Virgin/Colin Larkin, are a lot more interesting than those Top 100 lists with the same old Canon (which I wouldn't write off as bad albums, only I already know about them), but in a different order, are.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

her worst album ever

That would have to be the Evita soundtrack. Patti LuPone, where are you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I prefer even "Evita" to "Erotica", although I would possibly rank "Erotica" higher, because of "Rain"...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Somebody set up Nate the bomb.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt is correctness. We must Launch ZIG. For great justice!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I like The Strokes but here was me thinking they were just pretty good makers of hummable pop tunes that don't have much to say about anything in particular. I like them as much as The Bluetones, for example, and now I feel as I've missed something.

I'm really confused now.

Calum Robert, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

last time Stone Roses was reissued it got a right thrashing: "the point at which british indie realised all it needed to do was wankerishly rehash its past for the next decade", only more swells-y

I remember the first few times I saw these things they were oh! god! amazing!, and the next few, after realising the pointlessness of the exercise they were oh, amusing, what's it this time? I think now they've more or less reached the point of just being "oh".

thom west (thom w), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

the problem is all the choices that raise an eyebrow (and there are not many) only raise an eyebrow in the sense that the reader responds by saying "you're not seriously saying that mediocre-but-quite-successful rock album recorded in the last two years is a classic." nothing surprises in the sense that the reader says "whoah, that's one you never see in top 100 lists" or "whoah, you never thought the NME would have put that one in."

of course, all the writers have done is made a list of their favourite albums at the moment, and there's nothing wrong with going for obvious choices if they happened to be your favourite albums. but there's no sense of throwing some weird shit at their readers. in fact, this list is probably not far off an NME readers' list, and that is not a compliment.

the blurbs beside each album provide some (unintentional) hilarity, though. the strokes one especially. apparently, before the strokes arrived, the "new rock boom we are currently living through" seemed like "an impossible dream". music pre-strokes is described as BC - before Casablancas. and one of the album's main attractions is the fact that "Aphex beats have no place here."

enough pot-shots at easy targets, for now...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 March 2003 10:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i think that negative stone roses review was in melody maker, although i could be wrong...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 March 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

i think that negative stone roses review was in melody maker, although i could be wrong...

In which case, it must have been quite some time ago, as MM went defunct several years ago.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 6 March 2003 11:53 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah it was a few months before it finished i think. after they made the maker smaller and glossier

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:22 (twenty-three years ago)

As I've always said, just listing the albums isnt enough. Anybody can do that. What makes a top-100 list interesting is what the writers say about the albums, like why they're there. That's why that Download This! list is the greatest list ever, because he actually goes into detail about the songs and stuff.

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

her worst album ever
That would have to be the Evita soundtrack.

Try to find a copy of a CD called I'm Breathless: Music from and Indpired by the Film "Dick Tracy" if you can. It has some of the worst songs she's ever recorded ("Cry Baby" is, in fact, one of the worst songs ANYBODY has ever recorded!). It's HILARIOUS it's so fucking bad! It's one of the most Godawful albums I've ever heard in my life. Hell, if it didn't have the definitive version of "Vogue" on it, it WOULD be the worst album I've ever heard in my life.

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Arrrgh! Typo! "Inspired"!!

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Where is this "Download This!" list to be found?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard that record. Idspired is probably closer to the truth.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I read it as "insipid".

Nick H, Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

That's why that Download This! list is the greatest list ever, because he actually goes into detail about the songs and stuff.

Quite. And here's another one, he said egotistically. ;-)
