Ok.... what's the big fuckin deal about Black Dice?

Not that they're horrible or anything, but..... I mean, didn't all that psych meandering happen already (and much more inventively) in all the Super Roots CD's from Eye and co.?

maria b (maria b), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, they're very good looking young men. That counts for a lot.

I'm almost completely neutral about their music - it's not really what I'm into.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

well some of us liked them when they would try to start fights and make us all go deaf.

plus... rare is the US band that does boredoms type stuff for hardcore kids.

and "beaches and canyons" to me sounds only similar in spirit to the boredoms stuff.

but what do i know, i'm still getting my hearing back,
m.

msp, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree M, I'm not sure how useful the Boredoms comparision really is (though I've used it myself), beyond the fact they've taken an similar aesthetic trajectory (confrontational spazz punk -----> cosmic noise) and seem to share certain influences. The Super Roots CDs (and Super AR/VCN) generally have a much more structured approach than anything on Beaches And Canyons.

I like the fact the music can be both brutal and becalming. I like the fact the group's logic is quite contradictory and slippery, which is something to be admired at this late stage of the game. By me at least.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Kitaro and Yanni don't come to Williamsburg very often.

chuck, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend's comment upon hearing them live: "if everyone individually plays something uninteresting, it doesn't magically become interesting when they do it at the same time."

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

And if a band makes noise, it's not inherently interesting just because it's noise. And if they suddenly get quiet after that, they're not inherently intersting just because they got quiet.

chuck, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Chuck in 'this is why I hate the Pixies' mode.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I read a very promising profile of them in New York Press, but was spectacularly underwhelmed when I finally heard them. Yawn. Next?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks. I thought I was missing something with all the avant-hype buzzing around them. Maybe they're friends of Phiiliip. :: snickers ::

maria b (maria b), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

is that like friend's of Dorthy?

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll take Boredoms over Black Dice any day. Whenever I've listened to Beaches and Crayons, it's always finished leaving me underwhelmed. Just seems plodding, go-nowhere, murky, uninteresting, etc. I don't really get the hype either, whereas Boredoms can sound absolutely brilliant and leave me giddy if I'm in the right mood. I'd like to hear what Eye has done with the B&C source material when his remix record shows; see if he improves it any or if I'm still indifferent.

As for the older BD material, Cold Hands has its moments but the rest I've heard is fairly dull. I see what they're doing (noise assault... eh) but I don't really see a point to it all. Maybe if I'd seen it being done live?

original bgm, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Beaches & Canyons was good, and I thought the comparison made sense. Black Dice are about death and Boredoms are about life, is the main difference.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

initially, the transition from pummeling to experimental was kind of annoying... some of those transition works are kinda mediocre, but i think "beaches and canyons" is good stuff. their initial stuff was about how aggressive they could be, but this is them trying to musically do something and i think that raises it up.

they definitely moved further out... but so did a lot of the scene they played to...

interesting idea about life and death there mark. never really picked up on that... but watching a road weary bd play in nashville and seeing an audience member have a seizure, etc, etc surely does lend cred to the idea. beaches and canyons seems so positive though.

black dice doesn't seem like the type of band that really cares if folks get it or even like it. they've already notched the correct belt and will get their records put out and have a certain variety of folk come out to see them play and that's probably all they really care about.

well, that's what i can imagine at least... i mean, you can't hope for a guest slot on TRL with what they do.
m.

msp, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

You know I listened to the whole damn record on an airplane (Beaches and Canyons) because I read a review that said it was all worth it for the last track. I liked some of it and I was really excited to see what would happen during this last track. So they build and build forever but then they never kicked. Not once on the whole record and not at the end. It still drives me bonkers.

sammy, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:32 (twenty-three years ago)

BLACK DICE ROXX U R ALL GAY

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"I thought Beaches & Canyons was good, and I thought the comparison made sense."

Mark, I feel I should quantify my orginal post. I do think the comparison makes sense, but ultimately I don't how successfully it enables you get a handle on the Dice. Your life/death analogy is perfect, I think that Black Dice represent letting go & the dissolution of the self, whilst Boredoms are all about the instant and the seizing of possibilities.

Sammy, I think that whole effect is entirely intentional. There is very little forward momentum, when drums do arrive they usually get stuck on the spot rather than propell the music forward. I would imagine this is their way of confounding any expectations people had carried over from their hardcore incarnation. I have an enormous capacity for this kind of contrariness but I can totally see why anyone else would see it as unneccessarily tricksy.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"I feel I should quantify my orginal post"

Or qualify it, even.

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Your life/death analogy is perfect,

but i think beaches & canyons is rebirth. they destroyed themselves with stuff like the 31g 7" and the troubleman 10", felt chaos within and gave birth to a dancing star (thus spoke zarathustra)

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the post B&C ep better than B&C.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

the first song on that sounds exactly like the end of peking o by can

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i will compare and contrast tonight... thanks for the cool info.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

"if everyone individually plays something uninteresting, it doesn't magically become interesting when they do it at the same time."
-- Amateurist

this comment is OTM....really, boring, boring, boring stuff. I don't know why people are doing back flips for these guys...you go anywhere in williamsburg on any given night and you'll hear stuff that blows this shit out of the water.

I forsee B & C taking up a lot of space in the used racks in the near future.

~ddb

ps-i really liked the old stuff.

ddb, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the argument that "yeah x music is being done/has been done before by y musician" is rubbish. the record sounds nice, that's why people are doing back-flips

i agree the older stuff is better though, i've said it a few times but the 31g 7" really is a classic

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

the argument that "yeah x music is being done/has been done before by y musician" is rubbish. the record sounds nice, that's why people are doing back-flips

True. And the most recent one may actually be better if it sounds better than its influence.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The 31G 7" never seemed especially good to me. "Cold Hands" at least gets people to love or hate some tracks.

Semen of the Sun 7" = awesome

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i really loved cold hands, much better masturbation than the 10"

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked the 13 track thing on the CD version of the 10" (aka #3), but I thought the tracks towards the end where they sounded like a thrashy hardcore band weren't so hot.

Again, Semen of the Sun = choice. The Vermin Scum 7" was too muddy to be a good listen. The Erase Errata split kinda blows :/

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

the gravity 7" is not very good either...one of the few things i still have from when i sold all my 7"s a while back

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the 31g 7 cuz you can sit cross legged looking at the pretentious art work whilst listening to the pretentious heroin jazz mind-fuck and all is well in the world

the tigerbeat6 3" seems like a bit of a throwback to cold hands i think, esp 'head like a door'

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Cold Hands actually startled me. I think it's great and plenty long enough. Maybe the whole thing is better in small doses. Although, I thought the split 7" was kinda boring, too. So maybe: Black Dice is good in small enough doses that are long enough to get the overall arc.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The 3" sounds like Cold Hands meets B&C....

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I'd like that. Plus, it's 3 inches.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

i've yet to hear the split w/erase errata due to geographical circumstances (and the steady decline of the uk underground = no more decent disros. still not decided if this is a good thing). do any copies still exist? rough trade had a few for a while but they sold out in seconds

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

schnell schnell:
http://www.troublemanunlimited.com

I don't see it as being worth getting for more than a couple bucks. I see it here all the time.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

schnell schnell- I *think* you can still get it at insound.com, albeit the 2nd pressing which may be a different color or something.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I never really liked them so much when they were hardcore, but they started to interest me a lot when they moved beyond that. I liked Cold Hands a lot at the time, but they've moved so far beyond that that I'm more into Beaches & Canyons and the unrecorded post-B&C material now.

The Tigerbeat6 3" has the same songs as the new 12" on Catsup Plate, and they seem to have been recorded at the same time as the 31G 7". So that stuff's actually post-Cold Hands and pre-B&C....

ddb, what Brooklyn bands do you think are blowing Black Dice away? It's true, there are some really great bands in Brooklyn right now (though I do like Black Dice more than others I've heard).

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I was wondering the same thing, ddb, but only because Williamsburg bores me to tears for the most part.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I know ddb is gonna answer Sightings so I'll answer for him: Sightings.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Parts and Labor seems like a good Brooklyn band.

new 12" on Catsup Plate = whoa discuss!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The Tigerbeat6 3" has the same songs as the new 12" on Catsup Plate, and they seem to have been recorded at the same time as the 31G 7". So that stuff's actually post-Cold Hands and pre-B&C....

really? this makes so much more sense, thanx for the info

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

parts and labor are playing this weekend in SF. are they any good?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

no idea gygax! I've never heard 'em.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

That C-Plate 12" is limited to 300, so if you see it anywhere (and like Black Dice, I guess) buy it. Nice hand-painted covers. They've got some on tour with them, I hear.

There are definitely some good Brooklyn bands, Scott M. We could talk about it here, or we could just revive this thread, I guess.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, go see them. Who are they playing with?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

So the Catsup Plate has more than the 2 tracks on the 3"?

Aren't they supposed to be collaborating with Boredoms or something?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently it's out of stock at the label.

http://www.catsupplate.com/main.htm

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

So the Catsup Plate has more than the 2 tracks on the 3"?

no, but i just saw the sleeve and mmmmm it's lovely

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Jon: I'm pretty sure it's the same two songs, but on vinyl.

The Boredoms thing is actually a remix of the song "Endless Happiness" by Eye from the Boredoms. It's been done since last year, and will be the B-side of a 12" on DFA. But isn't coming out til Black Dice finally finish the A-side.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

CROM TECH

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

ocs (orinoka crash suite) is the solo dwyer thing (2cd set on tumult). one album is kind of neo-fahey, werid but melodic. the other is more rock / noise. not much like pnb or coachwhips but great nonetheless...

marcg (marcg), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

marcg, if you ever compare anything form the Providence hc scene to John Fahey again, we are going to have the mother of all argumnets my friend. What's next - Justin from the Locust making a record that sounds sorta "Tim Hardin'esque"???? I'll see myself dead and buried first.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

marcg, you rule. thanks gee.

cromtech is forever on my "i need to hear that list". is it true crom tech made up their own language to express their lyrical content?

orthrelm is cool live... but on record it gets lost for me... the fucking champs twiddle my metal love buttons.

check out grand ulena if you like the above. "gateway to dignity". they're ex-dazzling killmen.

m.

msp, Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont know...i mean sometimes dropdead sounds like blind joe death!

really though the dwyer ocs is very fahey. have you heard it?

marcg (marcg), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i've wanted to hear that OCS album. the clips at Aquarius sound pretty cool. the titles for the two discs are so great.
Disc One, 34 Reasons Why Life Goes On Without You
Disc two, 18 Reasons To Love Your Hater To Death

john dwyer is one of the funniest things about san francisco. he's everywhere you go, his presence sort of qualifies your event as being cool, and surprisingly for being such a psuedo-celebrity, he's nice as fuck

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

When I saw the fucking champs live I thought they sounded like The Good Cave In Album minus vocals. They're ok recorded.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

marcg, if you ever compare anything form the Providence hc scene to John Fahey again, we are going to have the mother of all argumnets my friend. What's next - Justin from the Locust making a record that sounds sorta "Tim Hardin'esque"???? I'll see myself dead and buried first.

first of all, it's not providence, it's SF. secondly, nate denver, from crazy spazo noise band Total Shutdown also does solo stuff that's totally folky, singer songwriter stuff about making deals with the devil, and in the middle of the song he busts out with his cookie monster death metal growl. the funniest shit i've ever heard.

and he's nice as fuck

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

nate denver i've wanted to see live but have missed every chance i've had. i've heard nothing buuut goood.

amps for christ anyone? (speaking of folkiness with relations to more pummeling tunage.)
m.

msp, Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i think one of the only reasons i would move to sf was to see more dwyer shows. the world needs more of him...

i guess dwyer was providence back in the day (when ft thunder was still around). thats where pnb started. browns new band is really sub-par. the album is decent but i saw them recently and it was somewhat boring.

i saw mick barr play a solo show a month or so ago and it was amazing. i cant decide if i like him solo or orthrelm better.

marcg (marcg), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm waiting on the Ross Robinson-produced Black Dice/Lightning Bolt boyband. It'll happen.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, young people (browns newest) are another example of hc -> folk...

marcg (marcg), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the Blood Brothers, brah!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The Blood Brothers sound like Antioch Arrow Lite + Hot Hot Heat

which is to say I kinda like them

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Brian Chippendale's solo stuff sounds like Lightning Bolt - metal. Hmmm. He totally bucks the trend of spazz noise fucks going folksy.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

But but but I thought that was the Antioch Arrow boyband! Make up your goddamned minds, you punks!

(And Jon beats me to the punch. DAMN YOUR QUICK FINGERS.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i like amps for christ

"funny as hell" never encouraged me to check out any kind of music, sorry. That Nate Denver sounds awful.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Sightings? Let's talk about Sightings and why they rule so much.

"Funny as hell" defines Noise Nomads.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Ross Robinson-produced Black Dice/Lightning Bolt boy band

or andrew wk?

m.

msp, Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew WK is gonna be the next Steve Albini.... I can feel it!

Ian, does NN have any recordings?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

the sightings are the most bombastic go-go garage band ever!

they rule!
m.

msp, Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

or andrew wk?

In that case, it's a terrible idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Sightings - I liked the 7" a lot better when I thought it played on 33 though - ditto for the first time I heard Dropdead. I guess I'm just a DJ Screw in a Young Black Teenagers kinda world...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Jon - Noise Nomads has a casette release out.. I want to say it's a split with someone, 'cause I'm sure it is, but I don't remember who. It's at Armageddon in a square white box in the "Local/Friends" section. Probably more casettes out as well, but I'm unsure.

On the Sighting's axis, should I get the Michigan Haters CD or the self-titled LP on Load? I've got the 7" and a copy of them live on WFMU. Are there any major differences between the releases? I really love the song "Chili Dog" from Michigan Haters, so that's what I'm leaning towards. Though, it's a few dollars more expensive than the LP w. screened covers and colorful vinyl.

Dropdead are also great at the grindy thing. They get boring though on LP... 7" or live is the way to go with those fuckers. They play here seriously like once a week or something.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

They are still around?? Cool. I always liked them.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

In that case, it's a terrible idea.

well someone's made a respectable amount of money from him... and i'd say he's the first from the crowd....

perhaps they'll get the blood brothers to cover a sabbath tune... say "supernaut" (how good was 1000 homo djs cover of that song)... and then once they're "in"... they're in.

put kelly and jack in the video some how....
m.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

it it has to be one or the other, get the sightings record on load and pass on 'michigan haters'. but if you can swing it, get both! i want them to be rich and famous, even if they're not into it.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this gave me a chuckle (from troubleman site) about the final copies of a chromtech album they are selling:

"You all really need to own this record. Seriously. I am not joking. By the way, this band is Mick from Orthrelm's old band. If you like Orthrelm you will love Crom-Tech. If you hate Orthrelm, you'll probably like NOFX!"

marcg (marcg), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Lauren - What is there to recommend the Load LP over Michigan Haters? I can probably find the Load LP pretty cheap, since Load be in my home town and always hook up the local shops, so that's a good point in its favor.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i would actually recommend _michigan haters_ - it's more varied soundwise and it just blows the s/t out of the water when it comes to making all of the stuff you have piled on top of your speakers fall off. i don't know what kind of distribution _haters_ got (it took me a few months to find it) but it is absolutely worth tracking down.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

check out grand ulena if you like the above. "gateway to dignity". they're ex-dazzling killmen.

i found this record to be incredibly dull. rock trio format does jazz noise, sort of like upsilon acrux (which in this wise isn't a compliment). better off with the snyder/thompson _daily dance_ album.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know what kind of distribution _haters_ got (it took me a few months to find it) but it is absolutely worth tracking down.

It was being distributed by Load for a while, and consequently there are like 2 or 3 copies at Armageddon Shop in Providence. Maybe I'll just splurge and get both.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

go ahead, ian - splurge!
i can't give you very concrete or compelling reasons for choosing the load record over 'michigan haters'. i just like it more, and i think that the recording on the former is so lo-fi as to be detrimental. i definitely do not expect slickness from this band, but they are extremely talented and thoughtful musicians and it's shame if that gets lost in the murk.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

oops, sorry - that should say, "the recording on the latter".

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:04 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe it's my crappy stereo, but _haters_ explodes from the speakers, whereas the s/t sounds murky to me. weird.

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i love the animal collective, who are friends of black dice. this actually led me to give black dice another chance after i wrote them off as boring hardcore troublemakers, and i'm glad i opened my mind back up. 'beaches and canyons' is pretty good.
