Promos

I write music articles for two of my college's publications. Is there a snowball's chance in hell that I'd be able to get labels to send me promos? How would I go about doing this? Anyone know?

Is this a really stupid question?

contact some labels and bands directly

There's an outside chance you could get promos. They'll be totally unlistenable shit, though. Don't say I didn't warn you.

you'll be able to get anything from the Beggars group with incredible ease, if the amount of secondhand promos from them i've seen is any indication

don't try sony, they just give them to reps to sell down the local second hand shop.

get your editors to get off their lazy asses and start sending tearouts, calling up and emailing labels etc.
Go photocopy a CMJ directory for labels, dont even think about the indie promotors though.

Really? That's who I had in mind.

I emailed Kranky last night and a guy responded today. He said he'd send me some promos and then if I write about them and send him the URLs to my publication's website, he'll continue sending them to me.

It helps to tell them what your circulation is .. unless of course your circulation sucks .. then, don't tell them.

Wow- Sub Pop and Thrill Jockey just agreed to send me some promos too. I didn't think this was going to work (my college is so small and the publications I write for are shit).

No, it works. Got a lot of free goods that way in the early nineties, m'friend. :-)

This thread really makes me want to become a music writer.

Evan - please don't. Our jobs are scarce enough as it is.
Lou - beware the snowball effect - you will begin getting shitty promo CDs from everyone from Fraternity to Interscope. Tell Lenny James Toth says fuck off.

K Records just agreed to send me some stuff too!

I wouldn't call myself a music writer- I'm just a turd writing reviews and articles about bands that no one at my school cares about! But hey, if I can get free CDs doing it, then it's worth it.

Haha. OK, thanks for the warning.

Now I hate you, Lou. I could never get K to send me anything!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Muwahahaha

Actually, the woman from K was very nice. She said she's not going to put me on the mailing list for Promos but that she'll send me some stuff for now and if I show her something I write about a K Records artist, she'll send me any album I request!
