NME Vs. Q

I would easily go for Q here. NME's search for "The next big thing" is at times pathetic, even if they discover some good stuff at times. Q are more consistent. If they like an act one year, then they usually like the same act next year too.

Q circa danny kelly era 92-collins era 97 classic.
since : dudd-o.

That was when Select was the best music mag. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

very true. kinda.
select was good 91-94.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me see... devil, or deep blue sea? Frying pan, or fire?

I'll pick Q just coz they reviewed our album and the NME didn't. So there.

Select was good from 94-95 until they suddenly decided to "kill" Britpop around 97-98.

What happened to all the good 'work' Morley, Sinkah, Penman, Roberts, whoever put in to the NME back in its 'golden age'? Foucault, Bataille, Situationst mindfucks, the hard drama of thought knuckling up alongside Billy McKenzie, Josef K, Dexy's Midnight Runner, Shirley Bassey (sp)? Which can only lead to the movement the other way, like what Meltzer tried.

If someone tried to do whatever Morley and that did (yehyeh, good writing) back then it couldn't happen: the conditions of possibility aren't met: all that thinking gone towards a plinth of sand.

I guess I just want to be able to HOLD IN MY HANDS a magazine with Tom E, Mark S, Matt I, Simon R, Marcello C, Frank K, Chuck E, Sterling C, Jess H - to hold it in my HANDS. And I can't do that, and won't ever be able to do that. All those names should have dollar signs round them: they're relational ($Tom$E).

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Tried what they did back then today. (Today.)

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And I know that that's a conservative thing to want and that the old 'hierarchy' (tv-magazine-book becomes conversation-book-tv-txt in ascending orders). But call me staid.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with the people who say that early '90s Select was the best. Like most things, it went rub during Britpop.

this thread is making me think of buying the next issue of Q I see in the interests of science.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Q.

You are sooooo right.

Neither. They are both utter, utter rubbish &neither are worth spending one penny of yr money on (take note of this DV. Save yer ca$h!!) I like "Terroriser" best.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 6 March 2003 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

NME can eat my fuc and and I hope they all catch AIDS and die

dave q, Thursday, 6 March 2003 11:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Why don't we form a conglomerate and publish a magazine called I Love Music featuring contributions from the people listed above (and others)?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Because I quite like my money and would be happy if it stuck around longer.

DV - the latest Q has Xtina Ag on the cover, who knows what she's up to inside eh, I think you should buy it.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The Q crosswords are alot easier than the NME ones.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i prefer Q. it can be really naff sometimes, but the reviews are much better written than the NME. And the NME's habit of trying to "get behind" stuff is a real yawn. the whole pretence that the new rock revolution is the most exciting development in music for years has gotten way out of hand: i find it hard to believe that the arrival of the libertines and the datsuns heralds a golden age for music.

More of a Bronze...nay, a Pewter Age.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Because I live in the U.S., NME is an absolute godsend. It's the only non-Internet-related way I can read about cool new music. Yes I know their whole next-big-thing hype machine is a little puerile, but hey, at least sometimes they hype GOOD (even great) bands! When was the last time Rolling Stone ever hyped up anything? Except crappy Mick Jagger solo albums.

Q is a little too lackadaisical, but still really good. I don't know a lot about it because I can only afford one UK music mag subscription.

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The Strokes. Christina. John Mayer. The Vines. P!nk. The Hives. Britney. Creed....

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not Rolling Stone! That's MTV!

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 6 March 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Lest we forget: Smash Hits was the best magazine from 79 til the late eighties when they went a bit too teenyboppy and the humour disappeared. Bring back Black Type. Select had that same tongue-in-cheek thing going for them at their best: the pools panel of pop was brilliant but yes they too went down the swanny. Q is all thats left really. My favourite bit of Q is where the readers send in their letters to a rock star of choice. What does that say about it I don't know. Q are a bit 'industry' if you ask me. Their Most Powerful People in Rock was just depressing. Who cares about record execs? Not me. Plus their charts are accompanied by sales figure analysis. Hmm, 20,000 less copies sold than their previous album in twice the time. Yawn Yawn triple Yawn.

kim tortoise, Thursday, 6 March 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, like theres much difference.
Only advantage: Rolling Stone has no Carson Daily.
